It is `entirely unnecessary for us to say that we are pleased West Huron ,has again .fallen into line with Liberal principles, and is once more represent- ,: 'ed by that stalwart Liberal Mr M. C. Cameron. So far as the paper was concerned in the contest, we carefully avoided any bitterness, and fought on ;; what we believed to be perfectly igtforward and honorable lines.— Witl0thatrefeetirz, in the slightest_on Mr Weismiller, who conducted a fair campaign from his standpoint, but used some wretchedly bad arguments, we certainly believe that Mr Cameron will more properlyrepresenttbe views of the electors than would his oppon- ent. On two occasions only West Huron went against the Liberal party 'is Dominion matters, and while we do of claim the constituency is Liberal 7 Amply because it gives Mr Cameron a rity, we do claim it is not in sym- i;..; :. with the general policy of the n Government. It has most • condemned that policy, and i-irf 1nortunate thing is that at no ✓;• stint date the electors will again be `Called upon to endure the strife and termoil incident to a general election. HE NEW DOMINION CABI- NET. b' Our treaders have already been in- t tined of the split, or, as the Censer- vatives themselves call it, "the little family quarrel," in the Cabinet at Ot- tawa, and are now, no doubt, anxious to learn what has been or expected to ,., be the upshot of this unprecedented, and not altogether flattering, event in the history of this conntry. That har- mony d:dnot exist in the "family cir- 1``"i'. cle" was strongly believed by many, iyseass, not 3ithstanding the repeated asser- `;' ; tons to the contrary by several of the ministry, but what was the disturbing ,- , .,;question could not he definitely known till made public by Mr. Foster. As Sir + Mackenzie BowelL was notthen willing to accommodate the " bolters" he made efforts to re -organize his Cabinet and All the vacancies, but not succeeding up to Friday last he concluded to ter -i- cier his resignation to the Governor ` •General, but he refused to accept it, and gave hire till Tuesday to form a tfit21iiiit;. If the Liberals had gone into rebel- lion as the Conservatives hove at Otta- wa, there would have been a terrible howl about constitutional rights, etc. The Nova Scotia giant, Mr Fraser, who spoke hese on behalf of Mr Came- ron, only weighs 378 lbs, and he's as good a speaker and jolly as a man, as he is big. The new Dominion ballot is much too small, necessitating the use of type that is indistinct, especially for aged voters. They should he at least twice as large. Mr Greenway seems to have a strong hold on the sympathies of the people of Manitoba, as the elections of Wednes- day give him another lease of power, with a good majority. Church • Chimes. A social At Home was held at Mrs. W. S. Harland's last night (Thursday). Rev. W. J. Ford preached mission- ary sermons at Holmesville on Sun- day morning, Mr H. Foster supplying his pulpit here. The officers of the Salvation army here Were recently instrncted to fare- well, but they have done such accep- tahle work that a petition has been for- warded to headquarters, asking that they be allowed to remain here. At a meeting of the quarterly board of the Brussels Methodist church a motion was passed inviting Rev. Dr. Willoughby, of Listowel, to become their pastor, and negotiations are in progress to that end. Rev J. B. Moore, evangelist, of To- ronto, is doing excellent work at the Baptist church. The congregations are increasing, and souls are being sav- ed. Meetings every night this week, Sunday, and next week will be con- ducted by Mr Moore. A most excellent Topic card has been issued for the use of the senior League of Ontario St. church; two topics are allotted for each evening; the program covers six months. A topic card has also been issued for the junior League which embraces good subjects. The meeting on Monday night of Ontario St. Epworth League was well attended. The subject, 'Loyalty to our church,"waataken by Thos. Murch. The meetings of late have been mark- ed by an increase of spirituality. The subject for next meeting is "the great est man in history." Epworth League and Sunday School Convention of (loderich District is the, leading.point of church interest for next week. The convention opens on Wednesday evening, and discusses Sunday School work, during the after- noon, and Thursday is entirely devoted to Epworth League work. The gene- ral secretary of leagues and Sunday schools for Canada, Rev C,A,Crews, is to be in attendance, and a very profit- able time is expected. A cordial invi- tation is extended to all who are young or young in spirit. It is to be held in Ontario St. Methodist church. The Clinton Young People's Local Union is nowlan established institution and on Friday evening last their an- nual meeting was held in Ontario St. Methodist church. Representatives were present from all the societies of the Union, which comprises:the aVillis C.E. Society, Baptist B.Y.P.U., The E.L.C.E. Societies of Rattenbury and Ontario St. churches, Londesboro, Tur- ner's and Holmesville E.L.C.E. Socie- ties. In the absence of Mr Foster, Rev J. Ford occupied the chair. The ad- dresses announced were "Christ's met- hod of personal work," and "The Chris- tian's observance of theSabhath." The first was taken by Miss Nettie Crich, of Tuckersmith, and was followed by a discussion of 15 minutes, which was in- teresting and profitable. A ten min- utes intermission was given for social intercourse and was thoroughly enjoy- ed by all. Rev J. Ford then introduc- ed the•second topic, and was followed by Messrs Elford, PriorHarris, Stew- art and others. The officers elected for the ensuing year are, press J. Taylor; vice, F.H. !ford; sec. treas., Miss M.G. McEwen; each president of the several societies are also members of the 'Exe- cutive as vice presidents. NEw PLow.—Mr Jacob Miller has constructed a snow plow on the same principle as an ordinary plow, design- ed to clean off the sidewalks and throw the snow to one side only. It was tried on Wednesday and found to work fairly well. HOUSE OF REFUGE NOTES. — Mr Thomson, of Clinton, who has been quite ill, is now better. The oldest in- mate of the house, Mr Gardner, of Stephen, who is over 100, was quite ill last week, but under good manage- ment, is again aleright. Reeve Eilber, of Stephen, chairman of the House of Refuge committee, was up last week, and treated the whole of the inmates to oranges. That I sizzle "In six seconds the clock strikes six o'clock. How long will it take the clock to strike twelve." The above puzzle was published last week, and although a number of an - ewers to it have been received, Mr W. O'Neil, of town, was the only one who got it correct, Like many other puz• zles, there's a "catch" in it, The an- swer is one hour, 59 minutes and 57 seconds, and is reached by counting On, time froth the last stroke of 'aht e)' look to the 'fifth•, tltrolte of ellit ()clock, 'ley which ••t#hila the sleek Mitt struck, twelve,' • I . town, where she Inte ds spending the Winter, takingu uaic leseans' , New- ton paid a flying visit to our burg last week, Mrs John Wall is under the doctor's care; we hope she will soon be better, We are glad to learn that Mrs D. Prouse, of the 1st con., is around again after a severe attack of grip. Mr Naftel is also improving, but very slowly. Mies McDougall, of Goderich is the guest of Mies Annie Sterling this week. Rev. W.M. Leech, Varna, will preach in the Methodist church on Sunday morning. McKUllop. ACCIDENT.—Mr John McDowell, of the 2nd con., eon -in-law of Mr Angus McDermid, of the Union road while engaged around a grain crusher last Thursday, had the misfortune to lose the greater part of four fingers of his right hand. This makes three of the brightest and cleverest young farmers in this section who have been mained for life while working with machinery in the past two months. We learn that Messrs Black and McIntosh, of Tuckersmith, who were injured some time ago, are progressing as well as can be expected. Seatorth. ODDFELLOWS. — Wednesday after• noon and evening found this town in posession of Oddfellowc from all parts of the county. In the afternoon the district meeting was held, and in the evening six new members took upon themselves the solemn obligations of the order, in the fine hall of Fidelity Lodge. The degree work was exempli- fied by teams from Exeter, Hensall and Clinton. The dramatic and pantonine parts were performed most admirably, and could not fail to make a lasting im- pression for good on the minds of all present, and particularly to impress the grand aims of the Order on the young men just entering it. During the evening the visitors, to the num- ber of about a hundred, partook of an oyster supper, provided for them by the hospitable members of Fidelity lodge. GENTLEMEN,—In a critical period in the history of Canada, you did me the honor of electing me to represent you in Parliament, as a solemn protest against the mismanagement of our public affairs. I heartily thank both my Liberal and Conservative friends for the honor so„conferred, There is hope for Canada when the great consum- ing masses abandon their party allegi• ance in the interest Of the common land. There is more hope for Canada now, when men of all shades of posit i - cal thought unite to stem the tide of mis-gover nment and corruption and to elevate political life to a higner ai,d nobler plane. My humble efforts will be used in your interests to that end. I thank platform speakers, canvassers, electors, one and all, for this last and pronounced confidence in me and ap- proval of the cause I so long and still ad vocate. I have the honor to he, Yours trulyt M. U. CAMERON, Goderich, 15th January, 1896. The Mail and Empire gives Greenway 85 supporters, Communication has been received by the Attorney General's Department from Eng- land stating that the decision of the Privy Jouncil regarding the power of the Prov- ince to prohibit the manufacture and sale of liquor was expected daily, but no date was fixed. The Canadian consent to the terms of the treaty of arbitration, on the Behring Sea Seizure claims has been given; nothing should now hinder tbe progress of the in• gniry. Great Britain is seriously and steadily preparing for war on a very large scale, at land and on sea, against Germany, or Ger, many, France and Russia, should they combine against her.
