The watermelon days have gone, Green apples are no more ; And peaches ripe, no longer gripe The small boy, as of yore. The ginger bottle's put away, And mother now can rest ; Her little son no longer has That pain beneath his vest. Thanksgiving Day is almost gone, And peace reigns overhead ; And mother's joy -her own sweet boy, Is trundled off to bed. Yet what are those unearthly sounds, That pierce the midnight air ? And what's that throbbing noise we hear Come rumbling down the stair ? It is our little household pet Who tosses upon high, And wages an unequal fight with i,urkey and mince pie. Outside Opinion. To the Editor of The News -Record. DEAR SIR, -Two weeks ago the New Era called the attention of its read- ers to an alleged slight mistake in your columns regarding the date for the reception of inmates at the House of Refuge. As I had not the privilege of seeing THE NEWS -RECORD of that date, I am not in a position to know if such was the case or not ; and I assure you most sincerely I would not affirm it was so, simply because the New Era state 1 itlfor a fact. It ill -becomes the editor of the New Era to cast slurs at any newspaper, family or private in- dividual on that line, for if there is one paper more guilty in that particular than another, it is quite evident to all readers that the New Era can hold its own against all comers. Why, sir, there is scarcely a column of your un- reliable contemporary that does not contain some of the most glaring mis- statements that ever appeared in pub - lie print. It would be well for the New o Era to spend more time sweeping around his own door and correcting his own mistakes, and a little less in erratically nosing around looking for flaws in the character of his neighbors or mistakes in newspapers. He would thus better serve his town and country and more beautifully adorn his position and the profession. Blyth, Nov. 12. Yours truly, LIBERALITY. *Ott', and. J, Benson, Malcolm McLean end; 41ex,19t, L,McIntosh. Among the public or legal advertise menu was one tQ incol'pprate the lr3e of BV netangoresunder the name of Kincardine. Another woe that at the next session `of° he Provincial Parlia- went the Previsional Municipal Coun- cil of the County of Bruce would apply fora special .Actto dsY'ida the,g7eu ty, of Bruce into Twq counties to be called the United Counties of Bruce and Wal- lace, and that Pogetangore and South, ampton be the county towns of the re, speetive counties, Another notice stated that a petition would be present- ed against -any division of the County and that in the event of the necessary steps to erect the County Buildings in Walkerton not being taken, that the apollciztions . would be made to refer the location of the County Town to the Governor General and Council fcr de- 'Won. There is a lengthy account of the ex. penditure on Roads and Bridges in this county out of the Improvement Fund and Colonization Grants, in which the names of James Benson, T. H. Clenden- nin, Samuel T. Rowe, J. D. and 1'. Hopper and other old residents figure entensively. The paper contains a notice of a re- solution that would he moved at the next meeting of the County Council of Huron and Bruce to be held at Gode- rich on September 23rd, 1857, to raise by Debentures the Sum of £75,009 ou the credit of the County of Bruce for gravelling a number of the leading roads of the County. This notice is signed by George Cromar, Pro. War- den of the County of Bruce. There is not much local news in the copy before us, but the names of the advertisers indicate that many of the businesses of Kincardine are of long standing. Names such as Rastall, Barker, Keyworth, Cook, McKendrick, McInnis, Coombe, Le Gear, Vanstone, Robertson, Hurdon, etc. are familiar to readers of late Kincardine papers. Even in those early days it seems that "pitching into" people was a fay- orite pastime of the editor, a practice which he indulged in in most of nis writ- ing. A POPULAR WEEKLY. Among Canadian --newspapers the commanding position occupied by the Toronto Globe is.uniyersally acknow- ledged. In enterprise it is unrivalled, as a news distributor it has no equal, as a leader of public opinion it exer- cises an influence that is felt from one end of the Dominion to the other. The weekly Globe, with its varied de- partments -agricultural, general news, editorial and special articles -makes a most excellent home paper, and is de- servedly popular in all parts of the country. In The Fifties. A CHAPTER FROM THE EARLY HISTORY OF BRUCE Bruce Herald. Through the kindness of Mr. William Collins, we have had the privilege of looking over a well preserved copy of "The Western Canadian Common- wealth and Kincardine and County of Bruce -Advertiser" published in Kincar- dine, and hearing date September 15th, 1857. The editor was J. McLay, and much of the matter contained in it makes interesting reading at the pre- sent day. The copy before us is No. 6, and was at that time the only paper published in the County. In an editor- ial note the editor announces with mal- icious pleasure the demise ot its' only rival, The Saugeen Pioneer. The Com- monwealth was sold at $2 per annum and its advertising rates are given as follows : 6 lines ^and under 2s tld for .first insertion and 7d for each subse- quent insertion. For 10 lines the rates wetee 8s'4d, and 10d respectively. Over 10 lines the rates were 4d a line for first insertion and ld per line after- wardll. Marriage' notices cost 2s til. Birth notices were half this and Death notices were inserted free. The palter was liberally. patronized by fldvertisers, most of those in Kin. eardihe dating their advertisement "Penetangore," by which name the vil- lage was then chiefly known. Several Walkertonians had cards in it, among them being Drs. Secord and W. J. FRIENDLY ADVICE. IS THE MEANS OF RENEWED HEALTH TO A SUFFERER. DR. WILLIAMS' PINK PILLS SUCCEED WHERE DOCTORS HAD FAILED FOR THIRTY YEARS—THE SUFFERER ONE OF NORTHUMBERLAND CO'S BEST KNOWN MEN. From the Trenton Advocate. Mr. John Frost's case is a most re- markable one. He is one of the best known residents in the county of Northnmherland, being a retired farmer ot most ample means, and having financial dealings with hundreds throughout the townships. We have known him intimately for over ten years. From him we gleamed the following facts in February last :-"I was born in England and at twelve years of age arrived in Canada with my parents, who settled in Prince Edward county and remained there for thi ee years. We then moved to Rawdoil township in the neighboring county of Hastings. For thirty years I was a resident, of Rawdon, three years I re- sided in Seymour township and I a..t at present, and have been for the pr.st ten years, a resident of Murray town- ship. For thirty years I have been a martyr to rheumatism. During that time I have been treated by scores of doctors and found partial relief from but one. I have during the same period tried innumerable remedies, but A Beal Alt" 0.0 Old, Thlogo• Of all the fiec& t#ie turkey coek Wae roasting on. the lowest limb', The females fat aboye him eat And, trembling, listened unto blrn. Mies Allingham, a music teacher of Hawkestone, was killed on the G. T. R. track at Oro station. J. G. Gaudaur, champion sculler of America, has deposited $500 with The Globe in support of a challenge for £7,00 a side to C. R. Harding, the English champion. Gaudaur wiltake £50 ex- penses and row in England or will al- low £10 expenses if Harding comes to America. Getting tato my Rig was Agonizing, all failed to cure me. Scarcely a month passes that I am not laid up, and frequently I am confined to bed six or eight weeks, unable to -move hand or foot and suffering untold agonies. Two well known doctors told me , one time that I would haye to have an arni taken off to save my life. I tell you I have been' a great sufferer in my time and I would give anything to find relief. My business causes me a great deal of driving and getting in ana out of my rig is agony. knowing his''story to he true and anxious that Dr. Williams' Pink Pills should have a severe test, we prevailed on Mr. Frost, much a^ainst his will, to give them a trial:" He got six boxes and commenced to use thein. At the start he smiled at our confidence in the pills. We saw hint after he had used the first box and he adinittee soma relief and said he believed there was something in the remedy. He continued their use and by the time lie had finished the six boxes he was as sound and proud a main as could be found in five counties. A couple of months have passed since the cure was effected and we deferred giving a his- tory of the case in order that we could see for a certainty that the cure was permanent.. We see him, several times a week actively attending to his buss- nese and at all times loud in his praise of Pink Pills. All who know Mr. Frost know that his word is as good as his bond. Yesterday we said to hire, "Now, Mr. Frost, do you really feel that you are cured of rheumatism ? 1?o you feel any twinges of the old trouble at all?" He replied, "I am cured. The Pink Pills have thoroughly routed the disease out of my system and I feel -.•i new man. The use of the pills has giveh me new life and I am telling everyone I meet about the cure. Such is the case, and having known Mr. Prost for years the suffererhe watt, and seeing him now active, and almost youthful again, the rapid change from suffering to health seems almost a miracle. However we are not at all surprised, for on all sides we hear of cures effected by the use of Pink Pills. The druggists remark their rapid sale and.•the satisfaction they give their customers. . William Farr, C. P. R. engineer, was found guilty at Winnipeg of arson and attempted murder, i • • DANGER FROM CATARRH. The most important feature about that very common complaint, catarrh in the head, is its tendency to develop into some other and more serious and dangerour disease. The foul matter dropping from the head into the bronchial tubes or lungs is very liable to lead• to hronchit is or consumption, that destroyer which causes more deaths in this coun- try than any other disease. As catarrh originates in impurities in the blood, local applications can do bat little good. The common sense method of treat- ment is to purify the blood, and for this purpose there is no preparation super- ior to Hood's Sarsaparilla. The power- ful action of this medicine upon the blood expels every impurity, and by so doing cures catarrh and gives health to the entire organism. "The Duke didn't make love to her himself at all." "Didn't he?" • "No. He got some other people to attend to the matter for him-" There was a brief interval of silence, during which he looked at her and she looked at the floor. "I don't think much of the Duke," he said, e.t last. "I wouldn't have such a fool man around," she returned quickly. A moment later she looked up Into hits eyes, sighed and said: "We don't want any European innovations, do we ?"
