and no wonder, for as a preacher lie .is

OPERATION. -M4'. Geo. Hanley had
his defective eye operated on in the
hospital . in Toronto last week. The
editor called on . Mr. Hanley last Sun-
day while returning from Halifax. He
was making favorable .progress and
expects to return to Clinton this or
next week. The attending surgeons
state that they never operated on a
more severe case or better piece of
stuff. He did not take chloroform.
This is saying& great deal /or a man of
Mr. Hanley's years: Mrs. Hanley: is
also in Toronto and is well. His many
friends will be pleased to learn of Mr.
Ranley's return and that he has fully
recovered his eyesight..

the patience of a Christian spirit, Eliz-

WHAT WAS HEARD. -On Sunday
evening while returning from church
two gentlemen were discussing the
Manitoba School Question. THE NEWS -
RECORD scribe following close on their
trail overheard part of the conversa-
tion, which was as follows : "Do you
know, Mr. -,I have an idea how to
settle the whole affair." Of course the
natural interrogation came forth :
"What is it?" "Just let the Roman
Catholics turn around and object to
Separate Schools and then the Pro-
testants would kick at that just the
same anti determine that Separate
Schools was the best thing for them."
This puts us in mind of what is said of
a council board which represented the
City of Montreal at one time. The
majority of the board were English
speaking aldermen and a motion was
introduced to put a sewer down in a
certain part of the city. Tho natural
course of the sewer was in an easterly
direction, but the majority resolved to
dig it westward. One of the English
speaking members being. asked by a
friend why he voted to put the sewer
westward replied : hem
Frenchmen wanted to put it eastward,
and that is why I voted to run the
sewer up hill."
We want you any day this week to see
