During that time, I tried a great many medicines which were highly rec- ommended, but none gave me relief. I was at last advised to try Ayer's Sarsa- parilla, and before I had finished the fourth bottle, my hands were as Free from Eruptions as ever they were. BY ELLEN 1aIOUNTCASTLE, CLINTON, ONT. Republished by special raved from tho Canadian Church Magazine of Nov , 1888. Father of mercy, infinite in ,night, Oh hear the prayer we ioake to Thee this night For health and strength to aid us on our way ; Thy guiding hand direct us day by day, That through Thy grace, and wisdom we may be Inspired to lead some erring soul to Thee. 'Poo long we've let our thoughts in sil- ence rust, And now we conte to Thee in love and trust To be by Thy unfaltering wisdom led That by its light we win our daily bread. Grant us the power to wield the mighty pen, Not for self -glory or the praise of men, But to eliminate the powers that lie In useless chaos and obscurity. Oh bring them forth, nor in a bushel hide The light that would some other mor- tal guide. • Oh give us grebe to read Thy will aright, And give us strength to battle for the right. Subdue our passions, keep us in con- trol, That we may grow more beautiful in soul All this we ask in meek humility, Oh grant our prayer, if thus it pleaseth Thee. The Pelee of a Drink. "Five cents a glass 1" Does any one think That that is really the price of adrink? "Five cents a glass," I hear you say. "Why, that isn't very much to pay." Ah, no indeed, 'tis a very shall stun You are passing over 'twixt finger and thumb, And if that were alll that you gave away It wouldn't be very much to pay. The price of a drink? Let him decide Who has lost his courage and lost his pride, And lies a groveling heap of clay, Not far removed from a beast to -day. The price of a drink 1 Let that, one tell Who sleeps to -night in a murderer's cell, And feels within him the fire of hell. Honor and virtue, love and truth, All the glory and pride of youth, Hopes of manhood the wreath of fame, High endeavor and noble nitn, These are the treasures thrown away As the price of drink, from day to day. "Five cents a glass !" How Satan laughed As over the bar the young man quaff- ed The beaded liquor ; for the demon knew The terrible work that, drink would do ; And ere the morning the victim lay With his life -blood swiftly ebbing 'sway ; And that was the price he paid, alas For the pleasure of talking It social glass. The price of drink I If you want to know What some are willing to pay for it, go Through that wretched tenement over there, With dingy windows and broken stair, Where foul disease, like a vampire, crawls With out -stretched wings o'er the mouldy walls; There poverty dwells with her hungry brood, Wild-eyed as detnons for lack of food ; There shame, in a corner, crouches low ; There violence deals its cruel blow ; A.nd innocent ones are thus accursed To pay the price of another's thirst, "Five cents a glass 1" Oh, if that were all The sacrifice would, indeed be small 1 But the money's worth is the (east amount We pay ; and whoever will keep account Will learn the terrible waste and blight That follows the ruinous appetite. "Five cents a glass 1" Does any one think That, that is really the price of a drink. Before apply- ing the remedy he holds the weaker ticket to the ear of his patient, who of course, can hear no sound. Putting it back in his pocket, he rubs the ear with his liniment for a while, then holds the loud ticker to his vic- tim's head, and asks if he can hear it tick. Deceived by the similarity of the watches and able to hear the sound of the last one to which he listens, the deluded person imagines his hearing has been benefited, if not restored, and at once buys several bot- tles at a big price. A Deal Between the Patron and Grit Leaders -Ample Rvtdoace or the Feet - Patrons Nominated Against Conserve. ttve Candidates, but Not Against Llb• crate -Several Notable 'minuets. To the Editor of The Mail and Empire : SIR. -1 have been watching the course pursued by the Patrons of Industry in their nomination of candidates. I have been informed that the Patron institu- tion Is independent of both political par- ties, and I must say that what I see upon the surface is to me very far from convincing mo of the truth of that statement. I wish to point out some facts that I have been gathering as the nomination of candidates proceeds. These facts aro evidence, it seems to me, very clear- ly of a sort of deal being made between the Grit leaders and Patron leaders. Now as I am resident in Eastern On- tario I wish to call your attention to thio end of the proviuce particularly. RUSSELL. Begin, please, with Russell coup This is a riding represented by a Grit the House of Comuaons, Mr. W. C. Ed- wards, In this county, evidently be- cause a Patron candidate might disturb the safety of the Grit candidate, there is no Patron candidate put in the field. CARLETON. Alongside of Russell county Is t County of Carleton. In this county t representative is Mr. Hodgins, a Cons vative, and a Patron of Industry is b ing run. Now why is this, since no ca didato is being run in the neig boring county represented by a R former ? GLENGARRY, In this county the present representa- tive is a Conservative, Mr. 11,. R. M Lerman, and so a Patron candidate being run, a party named J. L. Wiese a Grand Patron trustee, being the Pa ron of Industry candidate. ADDINGTON. Not far off is the County 01 Addhl ton. It is a county at present held I the Grits, its member boiug Dr. , Dat son, who, 1 hear, is even an Qatar Government official. There is no Pa ron candidate here. Why the Gra Board of the Patrons have not push a candidate in kers seems very quee Perhaps, however, it was thought might hurt the chances of Mr. Dawso Grit M.I'. SOUTH LANARK. South Lanark is represented by Minister, the Hon. John Haggart, a very able man, and an honor to his constit ency and the country. Against him atron has been brought out. WEST ONTARIO. In this riding the Grit candidal s that run-and•get-beaten-et'erywher r•it political back, J. D. Edgar, M. ut the independent Patron organiz icer has put no one in the field again im. Evidently they feared that h ight he too easily beaten. Why thi ifh.rent treatment of South ILanar nd West Ontario? Do the Conserv ve Patrons of Industry think thei aders aro serving the true interest nd aims of the order in trying to de eat a man of the ability of Hon. Jolt aggart, whose excellent managenlen f the Government railway has save great deal of money to the country nd at the same tirne to refuse to dis irb such a political self-seeker as J. D do ar ? PONTIAC. In this riding, which is in the Pro• nee of Quebec, the Patrons of Indus - y offered their nomination, I hear, to e Grit candidate, Mr. Gillies, The ding is, of course, at present repre- nt,:d by a Conservative. Mr. Gillies ver pretended to he an Independent. ow comes this? In this county it was o general idea that the platform of e organization would be first present - to Mr. Bryson, the Conservative ember for the county. But before the nservative Patrons got to tile, meet - g, and before th hour advertised for e meeting, the resolution was passed offer it to Mr. Gillies, the Grit candi- te. Strange conduct this tor "inde- ndent" melt—not having any party cling ! A LOT OF COUNTIES. Prince Edward, North Lanark, North eds, Dundas, Stormont, hront'uac, st Hastings, and North Hastings aro ridings represented by Conserve - es. Of course, in all these Patron ndidates are being run. There seams be no doubt, it appears to me, of at this points to, esps'cially when can• ates are not being run in such Grit sties as Russell, West Ontario, etc. n all these ridings I have just men- ned, if the Patrons have any effect it only be to injure Conservatives and p the Grit party. LENNOX. n the County of Lennox the Grits d Patrons have combined. The Grit didate retired because he said the ect of the Grits and Patrons was one, ., to defeat the Government. And, y, if this should be accomplished, at then? Why a Grit Government. course. Of course, Lennox is now re- sented by a Conservative, GRENVILLE. n this riding there was' a Patron of ustry candidate in the field against Reid, M.P. (Conservative). But he got out of the way. And so !stee- ly that he attended tho meeting ch nominated the Grit candidate. was surely a model independent, no- ty candidate. NORTH YORK. his riding is represented by a Tor - lawyer named Wm. This riding is represented by a resi- dent of the riding', a succoosful horn° business man, and a member of the Government, the Hon. N. C. Wallace. Therefore, it was thought better to bring tar out a Patron candidate against him. in Why this difference in treatment? Why not put up a Patron candidate against both Mr. Wallace and Mr. Mulock, if against either? EAST YORK. This riding is represented by a Con- servative, Mr. McLean, and an attempt is being made, I notice, to get out a hePatron candidate. er- PEEL. a- n- h- e - An adjoining county to the Yorks is Peel. 1t is represented by a Grit, and therefore there eeemlr to be no anxiety to get a Patron candidata, in the field. PRESCOTT. In Prescott county the Patron nomi- c- nation has been offered to, and, I un - 18 derstand, accepted by, a Montreal law- n, yer, who for years was a political C- roustabout for the Grit party. He will make a capital Independent. Now, I wish to say to Conservative g- Patrons that it looks to me as though a game was being put up on them. I v- shall show this still further in other let- io fere. t- In the meantime, I would like to see nd communications upon the subject from ed all parts of the province. r, The The Grits are openly boasting that n, they have joined hands with the Patron leaders. No Conservative Patron will join hands with Cartwright and Chari - a ton and Mulock, unless he is being lied to and misled. Let the light in on the u- matter from every part.
