FENCE 35 FEET HIGH, 15 Is Lrto„ded reit Ko.p Qlpnrr.bhsg Netelatror4 From '1hro.wing Things Into Rauh Oslter'4 Yards. Tho largest board fence ptirhaps in the state now prevents the families of Joseph Morris, at No. 10 High Street and et Peter Slnith, who lives next door, from exchanging epithets and Inisiilds as they us 'd to do. It likuwisd affords occupation for the gossips of the neigh- borhood, for they can now report to the members or each family the doings of the other, a4 file fence is so long; and so high that from no part of either yard or house can any portion of the other be seen except the gable ends of the dwell- inga. Morrie built the fence. "You see," he said, "the women folks got to calling each other pet names and occasionally something would fly from one yard into the other. It annoyed me, and as they wouldn't quit their non- sense, I just put up the fence. It's 35 feet high and they can't throw over it. It extends frons the eldewalk line to the rear end of my lot, just 74 feet 6 inches, and Is so tight they can't even talk through it. When the carpenters began to dig the post -holes, Smith hired a surveyor to run out his lot. He found that the fence was on Morris's lot, but ho chuckled when the slicveyor said it ex- tended 10 inches over 'the street lino. He sent out and got a quart of beer and invited the carpenters to join hint in drinking it. They lost halt' an hour. "Great scheme 1' ejaculated Smith. "I'll make the fence cost Morris sevaral dollars." Aud he kept the growler going all that day and the next, and every day until the fence was finished. When the carpenters had the fence up 25 feet high their ladder broke, and they borrowed a long one from Smith. That day Morris, Smith and the sur- veyor got into an argument over the location of tate fence. Morris said it did not extend over the street line, so Smith sent for a photographer. "I'm going to take this lines into court," said he, "and I'm going to let the judge and jury see it." The photographer came that after- noon, and Smith took his place on his side of the fence. He wore the hat and suit that the City Fire Department pre- sented to him when he was its chief some years ago. The members of his family ranged themselves at his side and Morris and his family were grouped on their side of the fence. The first bpicture was a failurefor the women egan to talk at cacti other around the end of the fence. The second attempt was more successful. When the fence was completed the event was celebrated by both families, the carpenters being entertained by both. Smith has secured the services of a lawyer, who has invoked the aid of the City Council in trying to secure the re- moval of the fence on the ground that it extends over the street line. Morris has got into hot water with some members of his wife's family, who live in the house with him. He was ar- rested the other night upon the com- plaint of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Kate Elliott. She said that when she remon- strated with hien because the big fence shut the sunlight out from her rooms, Morris locked her out of the house and threatened to make mincemeat of her. Police Justic Neill placed Morris under bonds to keep the peace. -N. Y. Sun. People Make Money by Using Diamond Dyes. In every section of Canada, Diamond Dyes are blessings and enable people to save money and make money. One user of Diamond Dyes says :-- "I have been using your dyes for seven years. I can only say they are the hest on the market. I have made as high as $24 a week in dyeing, and could not give satisfaction unless I used Diamond Dyes, I would not be without them, for when I ;ism without Diamond Dyes I consider I am with- out money." Another user says :-"My wife has thoroughly tested the Diamond Dyes, and they are better than any we have ever used. She used them according to directions, and we have washed the goods in strong soap:aids, exposed them to the piercing Winds of our cold winter, and afterward to bright sun- light, and they retain their beautiful fresh color." a CURIOSITIES OF TAXATION. The house tax in Greece brings $400,- 000 a year. The tithes of England amount to $20,- 250,000 a year. Russia raises $1,500,000 a year by the sale of passports. In the early days of the Virginia and Darolina colonies taxes worn paid in to- bacco. Customs duties on imports were col- lected in England by Ethelred Il. as early as 979. Most of the Asiatic countries have boon ruined by the system of "farm- ing the taxes.' Almost all the Turkish taxes are farmed out, and the resulting corrup- tion is very great. The first mention of any sort of taxa- tion in Greek history is a tax levied by Solon, B.C. 540. The people of Europe pay their re- 3pective Governments $50,000,000 every year in taxes on salt. On the west coast of Africa the taxes assessed by the petty kings are payable In palm oil and ivory.
