Diamond Dyes Superior t )

Colors heal' a relal ion to each other
something like that of the musical
notes, 111)d there is a harmony of col-
ors, analogous to that of musical
sounds. An t'X(1llSitt' taste in thecorn-
binitt.ion of color's may be the result of
a nice perception of there relations,
in the same way that 1111 exquisite
taste in music is produced by a nice
perception of the relations of
musical sounds. It is unquestionable
that there are some combinations of
color which are universally pleasing,
and others as universally disagreeable.
independently of any associations or
acquired habits. To the connoisseur
and lover of colors, 00 more lovely or
beautiful sight can he presented, than
the tasteful artangernent of over forty
standard colors of Diamond I)yes,
and the one hundred rich shades and
tints which are produced from there.
Diamond Dye colors are scientifically
prepared, and when used according
to directions in the home, the results
are pleasing and truly grand. it would
require a good sized volume to describe
their uses and possibilities, and to tell
the comfort, joy and pleasure they are
capable of giving.
Mother's and daughter's dresses are
made new by them; their wraps. jack-
ets, shawls, ribbons and hose ate with
little trouble renewed for home and
street wear. Father's and son's suits
are tnade to look brand new ; and any
cast off article e4f wearing apparel can
he made to blossom as the rose. This
work of transformation, remember,
can only be successfully n.ccotuplishe
by the invincible Diamond Dyes.
THE ROTATION OF CROPS.
VARIOUS SCHEMES FOR CULTIVA-
TION UNDER THE SYSTEM.
Some Good Soli Feeclera-q Crop That le
Sowed or Drilled Should Be Followed
the Next Year by as Planted Crop-
Praotloes of Progressive Farmer.,
Rotating the farm with different crops
serves not only to prevent loss of fer-
tility but also assists in killing weeds
with no extra cost than that required
for cultivating the crop that may be
grown during' the season. Corn 11118
proved of as much value to farmers in
compelling them to kill weeds as it has
in providing grain and fodder, and if a
farm should be devoted wholly to crops
that are drilled or broadcasted, and
which cannot be cultivated -such as
wheat, rye, barley and oats- there would
arrive a time when weeds would have
full possession. To prevent this condi-
tion of affairs the farms are made to
grow crops that must of necessity be
cultivated, and in so doing there is a
saving of labor in killing the weeds.
The rotation with corn as the only
cultivated -crop, however, is too limited,
as the land is thus made to produce
grain of some kind every year, which
is detrimental as depriving it of cer-
tain plant foods, and leaving all excess,
comparatively, ot that, which cannot be
utilized by grain crops.
GREATER DIVERSITY OF CROPS.
One cause of weeds flourishing on
some soils is that they thrive on plant -
foods left over by the grain crops, a con-
dition which renders the soil impover-
ished for other grain crops, yet very fer-
tile for weeds. because the weeds are
able to get a good start, make rapid
growth,secure abundant moisture below
the surface, and deprive the land of
that which was not utilized by the crops,
the results being that the soil is still
further impoverished. Tllis may be pre-
vented by growing root -crops atter corn
to be followed by clover or Borne grass
crop. No two crops of the same kind
should be grown on the land in succes-
sion and a crop that is sowed or drilled
should be followed by a planted crop
the next year to keep the soil clears.
Wheat, corn, oats, potatoes, corn and
clover, followed by wheat again, is a ro-
tation practiced by many progressive
farmers, but turnips, carrots, be.:ts,cah-
bage, millet and peas or beans are add-
ed to the list whenever it can be done
with advantage.
ROTA'rION, ADDS FERTILITY.
Suet' crops as clover or peas, when
turned under, add nitrogen to the soil.
while millet and Hungarian glass kill
nut weeds, even without cultivation.
The soil can be made very feriilo by
the t1Se of artificial fertilizers, it' a rota-
tion of crops is followed, becauso the
clover lessens the cost of nitrogen, but
there will be a loss of the fertilizer used
unless appropriate crops are grown tor
converting the whole of the plant food
into something salable, and to keep the
soil "balanced" in the nourishment to
be provided to crops. Rotation and the
use of green manurial crops keeps the
land always in prop •r condition for sup
plying the next crop, and prevents
weeds from robbing the soil, while the
texture of the soil, and its capacity for
absorbing and supplying moisture is
also increased. The best of all crops
used in rotation is clover, as it always
enriches the soil and leaves the land in
better condition than before, and for
that reason it should never be omitted.
THE FARM AT CHRISTWAS.
Keep the COWS (AV.". -U.o of the Ther-
mometer to Chita, IDE%
This is the season of the year when
the barnyards are muddy and the stalls
filthy. There is quite a difference in
the currying and brushing given it
horse and the utter neglect of the cow
in that respect. It'she is filthy her milk
must also be contaminated. The
strainer will catch the hairs and solid
matter that is not dissolved, but a large
proportion of filth is soluble, and goes
into the milk, Early in the morning is
the time when a cow needs cleaning the
most. but there is then too much hurr0
to ship the milk, and such a thing as
washing the udder and teats is consid-
ered too troublesome.
As a remedy for scours in calves, to
be added to the many is that of a New
York dairyman who scorches wheat
filer until it is dark brown in color,
which is then mixed with scalded milk,
giving the calf four times a day a pill
of the mixture the size of a butternut.
The dairyman who attempts to churn
without a thermometer is in the condi-
tion of a sailor attempting to navigate
Iris ship without a compass. There can
be no "guess work" in churning.
A breeder recently shipped a lot of
cattle to Chicago that averaged as much
Its 1,7o2 pounds each, and sold at an
extra price per pound. They were well
led, but they were also well bred, or
they would not have reached such
weights.

colleges in Denmark, and the Michigan
college is beginning a course which will
no doubt be followed by every agricul-
tural college in the United States. A
scientific course, with practical teach-
ings, will result in great improvement
in the methods of butter making in a
few years.
A truck farm may pay $100 per acre,
or as much as $500, according to the
crop grown upon it. It may cost more
for Inhor and fertilizers compared with
regular farming, but the area culti-
vated will be much less and the soil
will be left in better condition. Im-
proved implements for hand cultivation,
with effective horse hoes, make the
labor much lees difficult than when the
hoe spade and rake were relied upon
entirely.
