A YOUNG LADY IN ELGIN COUNTY
TELLS HOW IT SAVED HER LIFE.
THE CASE BAFFLED THE FAMILY DOCTOR AND
HE GAVE IT UP—RELIEF CAMEWHEN HOPE

ED.
From the Tilsonburg Otservor.
Mr J. W. Kennedy, who resides on the
8th concession of the township of Bayham,
is one of the most respected of the town-
ship. Recently an Observer representative
visited hie home for the purpose of learning
the particulars of the recovery of his daugh-
ter, Miss Alice Kennedy, from a severe and
trying illness, throngh the use of Dr Will -
lame' Pink Pills, after medical assistance
had failed. Miss Kennedy now preeents
the appearance of a healthy and active
youug woman of twenty, and bears no in-
dication of having passed through an illness
that baffled the doctors' skill. To the re-
porter Mise Kennedy said that in the au-
tumn of 1893 she was taken ill and a phy-
sician was called in. Despite all the doc-
tor did for her she continued to grow worse.
She suffered from severe headaches, became
very pale, rapidly lost flesh, and her limbs
were cold and swollen. She suffered great
pain and it was with much difficult' she
could move about, and would sometimes lie
for hours in a half etnpor. At last the doc-
tor said he could do nothing more for her,
and the family asked his advice as to her
using Dr Williams' Pink Pills. He said he
was of the opinion that they would not help
her. In spite of this adverse opinion, how.
ever, she determined to give them a trial,
and before the first box was finished the
wisdom of the decision was made manifest.
An improvement was noticed and with joy
Mise Kennedy continued taking the Pink
Pills until ehe had used fourteen boxes,
and felt that she was completely cured.
She has not taken any since the early sum.
mer, and has not had any recurrence of her
old trouble, and never felt better in her life.
Indeed Mies Kennedy says that as a result
of the Pink Pill treatment she has gained
26 pounds in weight. A short time after
she began the use of the Pink Pills the doo-
tor who had previously attended her, called
and was much surprised at the improve-
ment in the young lady's appearance, and
said that if Pink Pills had paused the
transformation by all means to continue
their use Miss Kennedy's statements were
corroborated by her father and sister, both
of whom give all the credit for her marvel.
Ions recovery to Dr Williams' Pink Pills.
Dr Williams' Pink Pills are especially
valuable to women. They build up the
blood, restore the nerves, eradicate those
troubles which make the lives of so many
women, old and young, a burden, dizziness.
Palpitation of the heart, nervous headache
and nervone prostration speedily yield to
this wonderful medicine. They are also a
specific in the case of locomotor ataxia,
partial paralysis, St. Vitus' dance, eoi-
atioa, neuralgia, rheumatism, the after eff-
ects of la grippe, etc. In men they effect
a radical mire in all cases arising from over.
work, mental worry, or excesses of any na•
tnre. They are sold only in boxes, the
trade mark and wrapper printed in red ink,
at 50 cents a box or six boxes for $2.50, and
may be had of all druggists or direct by
mail from Dr Williams' Medicine Com-
pany, Brookville, Ont., pr Soheneotady,N,Y

On Wednesday at Moncton, N. B.,
the entire crops were destroyed on a
number of farms by the hail storm.
Some fifty farmers and their families
are absolutely penniless and in want
of daily food, and fifty other families
have lost from one-quarter to one-half
their crops. Public meetings are be-
ing held to raise relief, and a general
appeal for help will he made. Nearly
all the loss was in St. Mary's parish,
near Buctouche. This was the storm
which did so much damage in Moncton.
A COMMISSIONER IN B. R.
Gentlemen,—Having used Hagyard's
Pectoral Balsam in our family for years I
have no hesitation in saying that it beats
everything else we ever tried for coughs and
colds in children as well as grown up peo-
ple. It relieves that tight binding sensat-
ion in the chest. We would not be without
it for anything, as we have a Large family.

THE TRIPLE CALL' DOWN.
How a Bored Irishman Silenced a Crowd
of Self -Admitted Oenlals.
There were four of them, as genial,
good-natured, whole-souled retailers of old
wives' tales as ever got together in the
smoking compartment of a pimping car.
They had all fed well in the diner and sop•
njoyiMed down * it.h;the anttoipetion of enjoy-
ing

They spread themeolves over as many of
the Seats of the smoker ae they could cover,
and crowded into a corner, a large, round.
faced, jolly -looking Irishman, who was
enjoying his after-dinner cigar. Somehow
he wasn't amused by the etoriee. The nar•
rotors spread themselves, but they couldn't
phase him, and the bored expression on his
face grow in intensity:as the stories went
on. The stories were not fanny. Once in
a while there was a gleam of humor, but
tor the most part they were commonplace
or vulgar. But they seemed irresistibly
humorous to the four, who pelted their
thighs and wheezed and chorttled and
roared as each in turn finished his yarn.
At last the big Irishman could endure it
no longer, and ho broke in with :
"That r ominds me of a farmer who
caught three boys stealing apples in his
orchard."
The original four turned toward him
with a look of expectant triumph, ready to
yell at tho first sign of conclusion.
"He chased thorn," ,vent on the Irish-
man, "and they all rail up a tree. ' Colne
down,' said the farmer, but they
wouldn't.
'Will ye come:down,for once?" asked
the farmer.
" 'We will not,' answered the boys.
" 'Will ye come down for twice?'
" 'We will not.'
WW ye comp down for three times?'
"Bo they all came down."
And with that the big Irishman winked
at the;only other man in the compartment
who was not of the story -telling crowd.
The yarn spinners laughed uproariously
for a second or two and;then a light went
up, se the Germans say, and they stopped
suddenly. They looked at one another for
a minute, Searching for the point, ,and
then one said, with a yawn and a stretoh i
a `Well, I guess it's bed time. Good night,"
and the party broke up, wondering.

A young friend of mine overheard this

"Mande, have you rung that second
bell?"
'Yes,rindeed; but I never see such peo-
ple! Eight o'olock breakfast Who ever
hooted o' each a thing! Why I'm pretty
near ready for dinner now."
"Oh, then folks dunno anything 'bout
time. I can't see how they do it. Six
o'clock breakfast is Tato enough for any
one.

But let that pass.

good enough for em, then I'd like to

,A Useful Cigar,
A good story le told Qf a sea captain who
died not long ago and who was formerly in
command of a ship in which passengers
were parried from London to Lisbon. On
one 000asion the ship naught fire and the
passengers and crew wore compelled to
take hurriedly to the boats. The passen-
gers remained perfeotly pool throughout
all the confusion and fright of the debark-
ation, and at last every one except himself
was got safely into the boats.
By the time he was ready to follow the
passengers wore almost wild with fear and
excitement. Instead of hurrying down the
ladder the oaptnin called to the suitors to
hold on a minute, end taking a cigar from
his pooket, coolly lig. .ted it with a bit of
burning rope whioh had fallen from the
rigging at hie feet. Then he desoended
with, deliberation and gave the order to
push off. "How oould you stop to light a
cigar at suoh a moment?" he was asked
afterward, when some of the :passengers
were talking over their escape.
"Because," he answered, "I saw that if
I did not do something to divert the minds
of those 1n the boat there was likely to be
a panto, and, overorowded as it was, there
was danger of the boat being upset. The
act took but a moment, but it attracted the
attention of everybody. I was not nearly
so unconcerned as I seemed to be, but was
in reality in a fever of excitement. My
little plan succeeded. You all forgot ypur-
selves beeauso„you were thinking of my
curious behavior, and 'we got off safely."
