Richard Collins was the first patient to
teat the new sunstroke apparatus in the
House of Relief in: 4Imison street, New
York. It proved a corriplete success.
The apparatus,, which wail designed by
Dr. Louie A. Stimsbn, the house surgeon,
is operated by clectrlolty. k',ro?ti, the mo-
ment a patient.' attives until"he. is on the
high road to recovery,be is, lifted and car-
ried about and 'leiid d Iiiby eleotrld tOrce.
Not only is this more gentle for the pa-
tient, but it saves the strength ot the em-
ployes, especially if the patient le a big
man. The method of treating sunstroke
has been completely changed of late.
Formerly hot ploths and plasters were ap-
plied to .the extremities to draw the blood
from the head and so reduce the tempera-
ture. Ice water bathe form the basis of
the new eure.-

treatment can best 'T51(Pdoitttrl d by4itkinie
Collins' case. He is, ,n Ii'tshrinan, %4"years
old. He was offered work by a contract-
or tearing down abut and accepted
it, although he t tie trod for snob heavy'
labor, and in no condition to stand such
heat as that whioh prevailed recently.
He suffered much that day, but kept at
work. About twp o'clook• he, began to
stagger and suddenly fell unconscious.
An ambulance was called, and the sur-
geon saw it was a case of sunstroke, so
hurried his patient to the House of Re-
lief.
By the time he reached the hospital
hie temperature had reached 109 degrees.
Ho was carried to the operating room.
Here he was carefully rolled into a ham-
mock. This hammock Is supported by
two iron bars on the sides, as if the man
were lifted in a blanket. The head Is kept
a little nigher than the feet. The bars
connect with an electric crane, which
will carry 900 pounds, running on a track
fastened to the roof. A switch in the
wall'.turned on the electric force, and the
hammock, with Collins in it, was lifted
froin the floor. It was guided across the
room and stopped over a tub filled with
ice water, near which was another tub
containing big chunks of ice.
The hammock was lowered, and Collins
was soon immersed in the tub of ice wat-
er with the exception of his face. Pieces
of ice were piled in and about his head,
and the first stage of the treatment was
begun. Collins was kept in the tub thir-
ty-five minutes. The physician stood be-
side him, carefully recording his tempera-
ture. The ice water treatment 1s quick
and effective. Within a few minutes there
was a change, and in a quarter 'of an hoar
the temperature of the body began to fall.
In half an hour it had gone down several
degrees, though still above normal, and
five minutes later the signal was given,
the electricity turned on and Collins llft-

The Earldom of Menteith.
As the pending claim of a gentleman
resident in Toront"i to the ancient honors
of the Grahams of Menteith has appeared
in the press, the following facts may be
made known. The claimant, Mr. George
Marshall Graham, Is the son of the late
Mr. James Graham, J. P. , D. L., ot Leitch -
town, in the Stewartryof Menteith,Perth-
shire, by his second wife, Isabella Mur-
doch, only child of William Marshall, cap-
tain In H. E.I. Company's army. About
forty years. ago Mr. James Graham un-
fortunately found it necceesary to part
with the family estates, for which pur-
pose he got the entail broken, with the
consent of his heir, the Tato Lieutenant J.
E.N. Graham, R.N., afterwards of the U.
S. N., and with the sanction of the Court
of Session. Mr. Graham then retired to
Canada, and died here in 1884 When he
inherited the paternal lands of Leitch -
town they were worth £2,500 a year, and
entirely unencumbered, his father indeed
having amassed a considerable fortune
for those dtiys as a West India proprietor,
and three generations of the family had
been connected with the West Indies from
the time the present representative's
great-grandfather went west at the begin-
ning of last century. Tho beautiful do-
main of Leitchtown, hard by the roman-
tic Lake of Menteith, came into the fam-
ily 250 yeare ago, and prior to this they
had boon at Grahamstown, in the Barony
of Rednook, contiguous thereto. Gra•
hamstown forms part of the Lettahtown
estate to this day, and what remains of
the whole iA now called Blatrhoyle, an at-
tractive and charming seat of,it is under-
stood, about 1,000 acres. The name Is the
modern orthography of Blatrgnhoill, or
Blaircheill, the ancient name of Leitoh-
town. Mr. George Graham's right to the
dignities in question was discovered by
his relative, Mr. Walter Ma11se Easton,
younger, of Ryeflold, on the Water of
Rye. Ayrshire. Mr. Easton takes a deep
Interest in till matters pertaining to arch-
aeology, and 1s a keen student in historical
research. I}, may here be Bald the main
feature of the new claim was the discov-
ery of two names hitherto entirely over-
looked by all genealogists who bad en-
quired into the Menteith history. The
effect of thi$ is to change the Leitobtown
descent frot'n Walter Graham of Gartur
and make it from Walter Graham ot Loch -
town. Knowing themselves tolbe descend
ed from a Walter, both the Leitchtown
and Gartur families, after the lose of pa-
pers during tho rebellion of 1715, fixed on
the wrong one. All this will be deipon-
strated in the proper place; but instead
of Garter, all along Leitehtown has been
the senior branch. They had 'a common
ancestor in Walter of Lochtown. $ince
1818 the Gartur family has been extinct.
Mr. Easton will also demonstrate that
the present Grahams of Gartinoro are not
of the Menteith stock ; that their pedigree
is manifestly a false one ;„And their pre-
tensions to the Earldom li sham.

"Some ladies are are a little squeam-
ish about wearing orrtheir hats birds
that have been poisoned," said the
;ata Io.gIH't' of a,,B•1',padway millinery es-
tablishment to a New York World re-
porter. .'`The sparrows,geld-larks and
black -birds that you see on ladies' hats
have been killed by poison. The poi-
son is sprinkled among the grain and
other teed .thrown to them, as you
would feed a tame bird. This is easier
than trapping, I am told by these who
follow the business, and besides, when
the bird is trapped, it beats its wings
against its prison and some of the
feathers are destroyed."

COLD IN -THE HEAD AND HOW TO
CURE IT.
One of'the most unpleasant and danger -
ons maladies that afflicts Cdnediang at this
season is cold in the head. Unpleasant,
because of the dull, heavy heaeache, in-
flammed nostrils and other disagreeable
symptoms accompanying itj; and danger -
ons, because if neglected it develops into
catarrh, with its disagreeable hawking and
spitting. foul breath frequent loss of taste
and smell, and in many cases ultimately
developing into consumption. Nasal Balm
,is the only:remedy yet discovered that will
instantly relieve cold in the -head and cures
in a few applications, while•its faithful use
will effectually eradicate the worst case of
catarrh. Capt. D. H. Lyon, president of
the C.P.R. Car Ferry, Prescott, Ont., says
—"I used Nasal Balm for a prolonged case
of cold in the head. Two applications ef-
fected a care in lees than 24 hours. I
