'TAKEN WITH BILIOUS FEVER THE AFTER EF•
F&CTs or WHICH BROUGHT HiM ALMORT TO
THE GRAVE—HE GLADLY SPEAEB FOR THE
BENEFIT OF OTHER SUFFERERe.1
-Smith's Falls Recorder.
Mr Joseph N. Barton, who lives about a
anile fromathe village of Merriokville, ie one
-of the best known farmers in the township
of Montague. Up to the spring of 1894 Mr
Barton had always enjoyed the best of
health. At that time, however, he was ta-
ken with a bilious fever, theeffe?its of
which left him in a terrible weal✓venad' con-
dition.. ,(When the time name around to
begin miring operations on thefarm he
found himself too weak to take any part in
the work, and notwithetanding that he was
treated by an excellent physician, he was
constantly growing weaker, and his condi-
tion not only greatly alarmed himself but
his friends. Having read so much con-
oerning Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, he deter-
mined.to give them a trial, and without
consulting his physician he began their
use. He only used one box, and, not feel-
ing better, discontinued the use of the pills.
This was where he now admits he made a
serious mistake as he not only fell back to
his former weakness, but became worse
than before. He could now do•no work of
any kind, and the least exertion left him
.almost helpless. Life was a misery to him
I gained a pound la day •
he was on the point of giving his case up
as hopeless, when a friend strongly urged
him to again begin the use of Dr Williams'
Pink Pills. He agreed to do so, and by
the time he had used three boxes there
was a marvellous change in his appearance
.and lie felt like a pew man. He still con•
tinned to use the Life-saving medicine, with
astonishing results. During his first illness
he had fallen in weight to 135 pounds, but
he soon increased to 180 pounds. In feet,
as he says, the increase averaged about a
pound a day while he was taking the pills.
Be is now able to do any kind of work on
his farm, and it is needless to say that he
is not ohly a firm believer in the efficacy of
Dr Williams' Pink Pills, but loses no opor-
tunity to sound abroad their praise, with
the result that others in hie locality have
benefitted by his experience and advice.
To those who are:weak, easily tired, ner-
'VonS, or whose blood is out of condition,
Dr Williams' Pink Pills comes as a verbi•
table boon, oaring when alljotber medicines
fail, and restoring those who give them a
fair trial, to a full measure of health and
strength. They will be found an absolute
cure for St. Vitus dance, locomotor ataxia,
rheumatism, paralyeie, sciatica, the after
effects of Le Grippe, loge of Z;ppetite,-hesd=
ache, dizziness, chronic erysipelas, scrofula,
etc. They etre also a specific for the
troubles peculiar to the female system,
correcting irregularities, suppressions and
all forme of female weakness. In the case
of men they effect a radical care in all
cases arising from mental worry, overwork
or excesses of any nature. Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills are sold only in boxes bearing
the firms trade mark and wrapper (printed
in red ink), and may be had of all druggists
or direct by mail from Dr Williams' Med-
icine Company, Brockville, Ont., or Shen-
ectady, N. Y., at 50 cents box or six boxes
for 82.50.
The Toronto World, Conservative,
says:—The political situation continues
highly interesting, as was pointed out
in those columns to -day. It hinges
of course on the Manitoba school ques-
tion. There is no doubt that the
French-Canadian Conservative mem-
bers and Senators are and have been
in close consultation, and that they
have come to a unanimous decision to
,demand of the Government that Reme-
dial Legislation on the line of the Re-
medial Order be introduced as soon as
the Legislature of Manitoba votes its
refusal to comply with the Remedial
Order, and is received here, an event of
a very few days at the most. Some
Conservative representatives from On-
tario pretend to see nothing going on,
and consider that there is no danger at
.hand. Others, however, think that the
majority of the Ministers% are pledged
to remedial legislation, and that they
-fill bring it down. On this point the
French-Canadian Conservative press is
a unit; they insist that a remedial law
will be introduced this session.

STEEL CLAD FORTS.
HOW THE LOWER BAY OF NEW YORK
MAY BE MADE IMPREGNABLE.
Romer Shoal Utilived—Eight Powerful
Rifles to be Mounted in Heavily Armored
Revolving Steel Turrets --Other Gun.
Between Them.
Veterans of the late American civil war
who saw the effect of shells bursting in
old fashioned Inasun.y walls at Fort Pul-
aski and at various other points in the
south do not need to be told that defences
like Fort Wadsworth and Fort Lafayette
are not now forts at all. Under' the fire
of old fashioned Dahlgren and Parrott
guns even, they would not be forts, but
slaughter pens; and before the devilish
energy of modern high power rifles they
would crumble like stucco.
Fort Hamilton having a considerable
amount'of earthwork, would not be quite
as bad, but it can no longer be regarded
as a serious protection for New York.
On Sandy Hook there already exist mod-
ern earthworks of great value for both
their resisting and attacking powers, and
sites for similar gun emplacements have
been selected on Coney Island and its vi-
cinity.
But while these batteries would do
much to resist the approaoh of a hostile
fleet toward this city, it has been deemed
desirable to design_ even -stronger fortifi-
cations.
On a line running about east-northeast
and west-southwest, across Rosner Shoal,
four steel turrets are to be set up. The
old method of building a foundation it
shallow water by throwing down loos(
rock and then placing concrete blocks or
top of this rip -rap work will probably no
now be adopted. It is expected that stee:
piling will be sunk to take the weight of
the forts, and these piles will then be con
nected by steel plates until the water car
be pumped out. Ample space below tin
lowest tide level will thus be secured for
machinery, magazines and quarters.
Upon solid foundations will then be
erected sloping barbettes, above which wil
be revolving turrets. The backing of
both barbettes and turrets will be muck
mere solid than that whioh can be given
to similar defences on board ship, anc
there is every probability that the forte
will be absolutely invulnerable to the
heaviest ordnance mounted qn any shit
of war. As the barbettes must extend sev-
eral feet below the lowest low water mark,
and also several feet above the highest
high water mark, it is proposed to face
them with cement so applied as to protect
the metal from the corrosive action of the
salt water.
Each turret will have its own revolving
machinery. The thickness of the armoi
plate will be determined by the relative
status of armor and the gun at the time
when the forts aro ready for their steel
protection, and—to a certain extent—the
calibre and length of gun will be depend-
ent upon that relative status. It is to be
cxpected, however, that the four forts will
contain eight of the most powerful pieces
that can be made.
The alignment of the forts is such as tc
enable all of them to command the ap-
proach to the main ship channel and tc
sweep the whole front of the bay entrance.
With such a battery 1n place the ocean
bottom from Navesink lights to Rocka-
way Beach could be made a great mine
field, and a hostile fleet could have little
hope of clearing a way through„the torpe-
does commanded by such guns.
In the wing connections between the
turrets will be mounted a number of
6 -inch rapid fire guns, with, perhaps, also
a few 8 -inch.
A lighthouse caps the summit of one
of.:the turrets, though in war time, of
course, there would be no light, and pro-
bably the structure itself would be taken
down.

from most dreadful headaches; at times
they were so bad she could neither sit nor
lie down but her head seemed as if it
would split. She tried everything she
could hear of and was attended by two or
three doctors, but could not find relief until
we got Stark's Powders for headache, bil-
iousness, costiveness, neuralgia, and the
liver. Since then she has been free from
suffering, and any tendency to pain Stark's
Powders remove immediately. They are
the only medicine she ever got that has been
of benefit." --Jonathan Page.

THAT ACHING HEAD.
What Cases It and Row Overcome.
How often the remark, ” Oh, my head
aches," and there are so many varieties of
aches and pains the head is subject to all
along the line from the dull and heavy
and oppressed feeling over the eyes to
the persistent, racking and torturing
misery of Sick Headache. The cause is
in most cases the same, the overflow of
poisonous uric acid is not extracted from
the blood by the Kidneys, and accumu-
lating in the blood, causes high and irre-
gular pulse, headaches, mental depres-
