BICYCLE BEAKS.
i LL DESIGNED TO CARRY THE RIDE
FASTER AND EASIER.
% Frenchman Who li140111s; !SOAP
Pulled by a Ilog--.A Wheel that Carries
Eight Men --A Railway Dike that Ran
Three Metes in Two•siinates.
Tbe, itloyole.fad Jew seized the Canadian
people with a firm, hard grip. This is good
neves to the bicycle manufacturers rind
the inventors, The manufacturers are
taxing eheir prcducing capacity tq the
1144.00 imel 0164 inventors are figuring all
the time on improvements, each of whish
is designed 'to help the rider to travel
faster and easier.
Many: of these mew -tangled machines
are decidedly novel in oonetruotion.
Some of them justly may be called, freaks.
Some day some ingenious fellow is going
to,hit the right combination, and then,
perhaps, man will, be as near to the 'fly-
ing machine of the inventor's imagina-
tion es we shall ever be able to get. The
bioyole rider now actually rides on air.
The craze is universal. and not merely
for pleasure, but for business is the wheel
now utilized. Letter -carriers. messen-
ger boys, mechanics going to end from
their work, clerks, park policemen, and
in Paris bakery boys and other persons
calling from houso to houso, use bioyole&
in their daily 000upaations.
Most unsportsmanlike of all the odd
experiments on whiols is that of a
Frenchman who rides along the Paris
streets on a bicycle'pulled by a dog. ' The
dog is large and lean, but under the
petus given by a long whip manages, So
its master says, to pull him along at a
much swifter rate than• he could Iteeom-
plish with the pedals. Perhaps the man
is old and decrepit. .At any rate, it is tin
odd contrivance.
Thorn are two motor bicycles capable of
developing considerable speed. One is
an American invention, the other Ger-
man. They aro driven by gasoline en-
gines. The Geruian machine has its
heavy driving motor set in tho middle
distance between the wheels. - The
.American machine is less culnbersome.
It looks like an ordinary safety with a
piston and cylinder attached to the back
wheels. It is said these machines can
develop a speed of fifty miles an hour.
The other bicycle is another ntachine of
the same class, except that other is used
instead of water. By a condensing system
the ether is used over and over again, and
with one equipment the machine is good
for one hundred utiles. It can develop a
speed of sixty miles an hour..
There are a number of bicycles designed
to increase the ordinary speed by utilizing
the hands for power as well as the feet.
The various styles generally copy the
French machine, in which the handle
bars aro attached to lever, running down
to the pedal. rachet. Bicycling under
these circumstances [oust bo fatiguing.
Another French ilutchine has n gear
wheel and crania attached to tho handle
bar• The gear wheel is connected by
chain to the large front wheel of the
bicycle. You turn the cranks and the
front wheel is pulled around, just as in the
case of the foot pedals and the back
wheel.
Thorn is a "lever bicycle" which has no
pedals. Where the pedals are ordinarily
placed is a horizontal bar, on which the
feet aro An rest. It is connected by a- per-
pendicular bar to the handle bar. By
alternatively pressing and releasing these
bars with the hands and feet a crank
attached'to the hack wheel is turned.
Tho bicycle sled will hardly be appreci-
ated at this time of the your, except in
those countries where snow and ice
abound tho year round, The arrange-
ment consists of a skate or runner, which
is substituted in pure of the ordinary
front wheel. The rider can then slide
along at a startling pace.
Military bicycles are a somewhat old
story. The newest thing in this lino is
one which can be doubled or folded. Mid-
vgay between the two wheels is a hinge
arrangement, and on this axis the parts
are doubled together. Facility in tran-
sportation is the' object aimed at. The
ordinary military bicycle is a squatty
and apparently ungraceful affair. This
feature is of little account in the general
ensemble of the machine, in which use,
and not beauty, is the consideration.
The art of pacing a cyclist who is try-
inglto, make spend has been reduced to a
science. It Is found that when a bicycle
and its rider pass swiftly along a track
they create a vacuum immediately be-
hind the machine. Of course the vacuum
is being constantly filled with air, which,
rushing into empty space develops an
enormous suction power. The larger the
body which displaces the air the greater
the suction power.
Taking advantage of this principle of
physics, bicycles have been built for three,
four and five men. The racer rides dir-
ectly behind this "pacing" machine,
and is drawn along almost in spite of
himself. The largest pacing machine on
record has recently been made in Coven-
try, England. Eight men ride on ifs,
tandem fashion. It is said to develop
considerable speed as a pacer.
Perhaps the -most curious machine of
all is used in Paris. It is a monocycle. or
maohine having one wheel. It looks like
an Immense cart wheel, but it is capable
of covering a great distance in a short
time. This is a pure freak, as is also the
Eiffel Tower bicycle exhibited in Eng-
land a abort time ago and imitated In
this country.
It is said that this machine has been
put into practical use for the purpose of
lighting street lamps.
Electricity does not seem to have been
mndh tried as a motive power for bicycles.
One man Invented a machine which was
propelled by a motor and storage battery
carried bebeath the 'seat. It was said that
itloost five cents an hour to run, but as
the number of batteries which a bicycle
could carry would be extremely limited,
itlis:not likely the machine was mush of
a success.
A Michigan man has invented a rail-
way bicycle which has wheels with con-
cave tires, so as tonable the Meehan° "to
run on one track. Something of the same
nature ,Drab used yedra, ago by: a perfo701.
et en -the etage, wlio ]'ode Ni 'wheel along
ie tight rope,' The Miohigan machine is
said td have accomplished three miles in
two minutes.
Near San Bernardino, Cal., a bicycle
which carries a sail to utilize the wind
for a propelling power has been in opera-
tion
Th.e
"bicycle skate," which is merely a
roller skate having inflated rubber
