It may be interesting in view of the
war now raging between China and Jap-

trade" ; in other words a few of the peen -
liar stretegems which'lave been success-
ful from time to time in past wars.
Pampeluna was logs to the Spaniards
in a curlous way. The Fronoh troops
stationed in the district were all allowed
to enter the town occasionally for their
provisions, and this foraging party gradu-
ally increased in number. One day, on
arriving in town, they started snowball-
ing each other, and as the excitement in-
' crea ed-iiii,off soldier from the outside kept
joining in the battle. Comrades armed
rushed in apparently to share the sport;
but when a sufficient number of the
French soldiers had boon introduced, the
guards at the gates were seized, and the
remainder of the army entered the town
to complete the conquest.

ed access to San Sebastian by another
clever artifice.` The general commanding
the French soldiers obtained permission
from tho Spanish commander to send the
sick of his army into San Sebastian. He
seems to have had a large number of men
sick and in need of sea air, for, on receiv-
ing permission, he sent upwards of 2,000
to the hospitals.
They yvee bandaged in every conceiv-
able way, and some had their arms sup-
ported by slings. The Spalnards afforded
every accoinutodation, and ultimately al-
lowed about 500 to be placed in the citad-
el. Having been thus far successful, it
only remained for these, presumably,
poor, dying, cripples, but otherwise
healthy soldiers, to leave the hospitals ono
morning, before daylight, and take pos-
session of the fortiflatlons—and thls they
did before the bewildered garrison realiz-
ed that the soldiers that they had so care-
fully tended were not friends, but
enemies.
The Americans once played a neat trick
upon an English fleet. The ships in
question were threatening a part of the
American coast, when it was rumored
that a man had discovered a combustible
which could bo easily transmitted to• the
fleet and Ignited, and which would pro-
duce terrible results. Of course, the in-
formation was conveyed to the British
commander and, no doubt, he was sadly
disturbed in consequence. At any rate,
one day several barrels were set afloat in
the direction of the vessels, followed by a
man with a complicated arrangement in
a boat. On nearing their destination one
of them exploded, whereupon the fieet
shipped anchor and departed in great
haste. Tho inventor had done hie utmost,
however, for the remaining barrels were
harmless.

The national debt in Great Britain
has been reduced by about $5000,000,000
during the past twenty years. Free
trade cannot be such a bad thing for
a country when it makes such a result
possible. We ought to take it in big-

conditions a national debt ought al-
ways to be decreased rather than in-
creased in times of peace.

do swear by it, I am a different inan now
to what I was ten years ago, when it was

now I am in perfect robust health and it
was the B.B.B. that did it- I suffered for
five or six yeare from constipation, some-
times so severely that I went out of my
mind. I tried vations doctors, both in the
country and in the city, and took medicines
too nuineroae to name, bat everything
failed to have the desired effect. When I
used Burdock Blood Bitters, however, it
succeeded beyond all expeotationti, requir-
ing only two bottles to cure me. To make
it still more certain that i3.B.B• is the real
caro for constipation, I may pay that some
two years afterward I felt the symptoms
returning and took one bottle more, and
from that time to this present day (over
eight years) I have never had any return of
the disease. I never knew any medicine
