When the House opened the Premi- er was first to rise, and briefly asked the legislature to further adjourn un- til June 13. This announcement was a surprise ,, for the Opposition, and Mr A. F. Mar- tin the leader of the Catholic wing, made a strong protest against the de- lay. He wanted the Government to state its intention to the House. It was unfair that members should be kept in the dark on so important a subject. Mr Martin then commenced. a long speech against time, and kept the House engaged until six o'clock, when adjournment was taken until evening. i .It is said that the action of the Gov- einment in adjourning is owing to the receipt of a letter from Lord Aber - teen on the matter, and that, consti- utionally,. the Legislature could take no other course. The question is com- plicated by doubt as to whether ,the Dominion Cabinet, having issued the Order, cau now undo its own action by recalling it. At the evening session Mr Martin continued his speech, at the conclu- solon of which the Attorney -General, Mr Sifton, spoke briefly, defending the faelation of the Government in asking or adjournnaent. He said die Legis - Jerre could not accept the Dominion Government order, es it involved a re- , turn to the eld Separate school sys- 'the House then adjourned to June pext week re connection with e school question. , It is understood they ,,ha?Se been sumMoned by Lord Aher- n to dismiss, the remealal order, but national schnol supporters and the Ministers themselves say they have not the least intention of aban•doning their position. It was necessary, they say, to adjourn the Legislature in order to obey the commands of the Governor- General, but he cannot change their convictions. Crisp County Clippings Mrs Wm. Mr Arch. Gordon, of Turnberry, ;drove into Wingham Saturday af- . ternoon last, with a high s_pirited horse ' attached to a buggy. When going 'home with a pair of harrows in the buggy, the horse took fright at the - rattle of the iron or something on the road, and ran away, throwing him out, breaking his right arm and otherwise injuring him. About two weeks ago Mr A. England, of the Goshen line. Stanley, had. the Children Cry for "'Pitcher's Castorla. neistortune to break his arm. The council of Blyth asked for a spe- cial census to be taken in order to grant an additional hotel license, and at the last meeting of the council a communication was received from Mx Henry Totten, of the Provincial Treas- urer's Department, stating that the Lieutenant -Governor -in -council could not comply with the request of the council, re the appointment of someone to take the census of the municipality, with ,he object of increasing the li- cenees, as the memorial had not been accompanied by a certificate from the License Commissioners. There passed away, on Wednesday, at the residence of Mr R. A. Graham, Wingham, Margaret Robertson, aged 79 years. The deceased resided for many years with her brother in Stan- ley township, near Varna, and about eight years ago she went to Winglimen to live. Until the last couple of years she had resided alone, but failing health necessitated having some one to care for her, and she had made her home at Mr Graham's. The deceased was a native of Scotland, near Edin- burgh, and was never married. A very serious accident happened to Alex. McKenzie on Saturday evening. He had been working out in the coun- try, and was driving home along the 2nd con. of Hay, when turning the cor- ner at the Zurich road, the lumber on the waggon hit the heels of the horse he was driving, and, frightening it, the line was broken, and the animal ran away, throwing Alex out of the rig. One of the wheels passed over his head and inflicted an ugly gash, laying his scalp over on his face. He was picked up unconscious, carried into a farm house, and a doctor sent for. After his injuries were attetided to he was taken to his home in Trickerismith, near Brucefield. He is now doing nicely, although he will not be able to resume work for some time. Speaking* Out The editor of Toronto SaturdayNight, good Conservative that he is, has evi- dently got tired of defending a lot of scaly transactions simply because they are done by his own political friends, and every week is expressing his opin- ion of things political, in a way that is refreshing to say the least. The fol- lowing extracts are from the last issue: "If the Dominion Government sees tit to subsidize the Hudson Bay Rail- road, a continuation of such an abor- tion, of such a scandalous contract, to pierce the northern desert of rock and muskeg with iron, ties and ballast, it deserves to be ignominiously kicked out of office, and every man in the Gov- ernment and Parliament who votes for it to be branded as either a rogue or a. fool. No business man would give the company two dollars for the road they propose to build if it were coupled with a covenant that the road should be op- erated and trains rim over it daily, or weekly, or Oen monthly. The whole thing is a steal, and I am not at all afraid to denounce it as a steal. It is a scheme engineered by men who have long been utterly discredited; if it is endorsed by the Government, its endor- sers will be discredited; if it is built, in- side of ten years it will be a ruin. a long, ironclad history of folly and reckless - nesse unparalleled in the history of re- sponsible government, With a countet- ALL MEN Young, old or middle-aged, who find thern- selves nervous, weak and exhausted, who are broken down from excess or over -work, resniting in many of the following symp- toms :—Mental depression, premature old age, loss of vitality, loss of memory, bad dreams, dimness of sight, palpitation of the heart, emissions, lack of energy, pain in the kidneys, headache, pimples on the face and body, itching or peotiliar sensation about the scrotum, wasting of tbe organs, dizzi• tees, opecks before the eyes, twitching of the muscles, eyelids and elsewhere, bash. fulnese, depogite in the trine, loss of will power, tenderriess of tbe scelp and spire, weak and flabby Meriden, deriire to Sleep, failure to be rested by sleep, donstipation, dullness of hearing, loss vbice, deeire for solitude, excitability of temper, sunken eyes, surrounded with raceme amazes, oily loolling skin, eto., are all Bymptoms of ner- vous debility, that lead to insanity, unless cured. Swelling hicnselt out with the importance which he cOnsider s becoming to one who poses as a dictator of the Cabinet, he said he was 'the representative of his race in the Canadian Ministry, for he repre- sented the French national idea. It is time some one stuck a pin in this bag of wind or else plugged his mouth and used him for a balloon. His strut- tings and self-important airs, together with his gabby threats, are unutterably sickening to every English speaking man in Canada. "Constitutional government in this country is in a nice mess and must cease to enjoy the respect of intelligent people if a galvanized political corpse like Schultz can desert his post in a moment of danger and enter into league, or seem to enter into league, with a government which is at var- iance with the people who have a right to look to him for executive action. However, everybody is sick of this Manitoba School question and there is no use jawing about it." A curious circumstance occurred late- ly in Paris before the Correctional Tri- bunal. A very old man, named Pal- gois, half paralyzed, having been charged with rnendicity, a decently - dressed, modest looking young girl stepping forward, said he was her fa- ther, and requested that he should be given up to her. "But has the old man any means of existence ?" said the president. "Tbe proceeds of my labor, sir," an- swered the girl. "But you must earn very little." The public prosecutor then rose, and milted the old man if he were not from Mune, and related to some large farm- ers. I An amusing story was told some years ago of Mr Sothern, a famous wit and actor. Upon a certain evening he was invited to two entertainments, pne for childtienond the othena reception for grown peeple. Fond QS children, he decided to go to the party given for the little ones, and thinking it would be a good Joke to .go into the parlor on all fours and roaring like a bear, he did so, much to the amusement of the guests and his own subsequent unhap- pinees, for once in the middle of the room he looked up and saw that he had made a mistake in the house, and had pla,yed bear for the grown people and not for the children.—Harper's Young The date for the argument on the prohibition case before the Judicial Committee of the Privy uouncil has not yet been fixed, but, it will pro- bably take place during the latter half of July.
