If the Liberal party were likely to be
brave dr sincere enough to take the
calving -knife in its hand and slash
tight into things, and make the em-
ployees of the Government feel as hard
up, and submissive; as the elector feels
who has been poverty-stricken owing
to the.low price of wheat and the dump
in everything merchantable; we might
hope for a diminution of expense suf-
ficient to justify a change of govern-
ment.
It strikes me that honest Conserva-
tives aill admit that the time has come
for house-cleaning. The Liberals claim
that it is their turn to show what they
can do in keeping house.
I should not be surprised if Lord
Aberdeen were to play a rather promi-
nent part in the politics of the next
thirty days. It is said that in a mo-
ment of alarm Sir Mackenzie Bowell
consulted him with regard to matters
which involved the probity of a Cabi-

the Goveinor-General, not having been
satisfied with the explanations offered,
proposes to have the whole matter in-
vestigated.

But it is still the opinion of the soundest

that our teeth decay chiefly for want of
the natural exercise of chewing that alone
can bring to them such blood -supply as
is essential to keep them solid and sound,

ON AN OCEAN LINER.
There are no laundries on board ship.
They take up too much room. So the
chief steward lays in thousands of pil-
low slips, sheets and towels on this
side. These come on hoard tied up in
bales of a dozen each, and are stored in
the linen locker, a cubby hole of a
place on the main deck. The ventilas-I
for pipes from the engine room run
through it, and keep it hot. There is
no danger of linen getting mildewed
there. This place is in charge of the
chief bedroom steward. He is respon•
sible for the condition of the linen, and
he takes good care of it. The linen
which has been used is thrown into an-
other room, provided with the same
atmosphere, and is so kept thoroughly
dry. Where there are clean napains
every day, frequent changes of state-
room linen, and an everlasting replen-
ishing of towel racks, the demands up-
on the linen locker are very extensive.
A liner like the New York nuts to sea
with about 0,000 napkins, 10,000 towels,
0,030 or 7,000 sheets, 8,000 pillow slips,
and abrnat 1,003 table cloth. Most. of
these find their way to the soiled linen
locker in the course or the voyage.
When the vessel arrives they are cart-
ed off to a laundry operated by the
company and made ready for the re-
turn trip. The American Line has a
and bone, or, if not that, the muscles of laundry of its own in Jersey City,
the loafing arm would rapidly become which is kept busy with the thousands
degenerated with fat. This is what hap- of pieces used on board the New York,

dulge in improper foods, and take too lit-
tle exercise, tho ones who have a tendency
to obesity. Theunused rnusoles and the
unused teeth alike must fall of nutrition,
and decay.
Great stress hap always been laid on the
value of flourishing the tooth -brush, and
doubtless it is impotrant to take care to
gently' clean the teeth, in view of certain
efloieuoles, in the juices of the mouth
tinder our civilized and unnatural dietetic
habits; but the dog, whose teeth would in
beauty ind soundness shame those of the
most' elegant Back Bay belle, though she
were an extremist in the care of them, is,
as we all know, not at all fussy in the
care of his teeth. - This, of course, has re-
ference to doge that have a fairly natural
chance, not to the over -petted ones kept
indoors, and badly fed. The latter some
times suffer from toothache and even lose
their teeth.
A. final word concerning the causes of
baldness: The idea still prevails that it
is due to lack of ventilation of our hats,
anti now -a -days most bat manufacturers
teir
seek to set things right by filling
hats with holes almost innumerable, not
only in both sides and the top, but under
the band, between the latter and the hat
Itself. The write& formerly held this opin-
ion, but after the most thorough -going
experiments in increasing the number
and site of th0 holes in lits tile, till flrially
those (templed the top, frOnt anti rear,
and on both sides, a large proportion of
tib-s1a oe, he was forced to give up the
ventilation theory. It gave him no m-
ita. Rls 11ght straw hat gave him almost
ail much trouble as his silk hat or derby,
and ke wondered at this, while he held to
the old theory, since the straw let in the
air vary freely. But on lifting his hat,
either rho tile, derby or the light straw,
ease came to the oppressed head almost
immediately. This dually led him to ex-
perinsent with a cord brought about the
head at the point encircled by the hat-
band, when lot the same discomfort was
at once felt as in case of the hat. This
loomed to settle the question, and the
mere suggestion •generally convinces all
who are well versed in the study of ana-
tomy and physiology that it is rather a
question of the circulation of tho blood
than of the air. When the blood, which

Drunkenness In England.
" In England, during ono year for which
returns havo been furnished, there were
142,725 convections for drunkenness, of
whioh 111,178 were for offenses committed
between noon and midnight on Sundays.
This docs not show that there was exces-
sive indulgence on Sabbath days more
than on others. In Wales the proportion
of Sunday convictions was still less,
numbering only 772 out of a total of 10,-
847. Compared with this- return for the
whole of Wales, there is significance in
the feet that in the border county of
Monmouth, to which the Sunday closing
sot does not apply,. there were 110 convic-
tions for drunikunoss on Sunday, against
$68 on other days. -London Daily News.
