A SCARCITY.
To the Editor of the Clinton New Era.
DEAR SIR, --AN ill you do ns the favor to
inform the bright, intelligent class of young
men and women among your readers, of the
great demand there is for thoroughly com-
petent Stenographers. We cannot secure
good material fast enough to meet the de-
mands made upon us lately for Shorthand-
ers. Last week we were asked to supply
two lady Stenographers for leading Detroit
offices, one at $10 per week, but could not,
as we had none to send. The opportunities
are grand for those of good average ability,
who are not afraid of work. We have no
use for drones. D. MCLACHLAN,

CLINTON MARKETS
Corrected every Thurod ay afternoon
Thursday, May 2, 1895.
Contrary to general expectations wheat con-
tinues to advance in price and at present writ-
ing
riting the indications are that it may yet reach
the dollar figure before many weeks elapse.
To -day wheat is worth here 70c per bushel, and
yet very little if any le coming to the market.
The farmers are busy and anyway there ap-
pears to be less wheat in the country than
might have boon supposed. A local dealer re-
marked to the NEW ERA the other day that
farmers never sell wheat in a rising market.
It is invariably the practice, ho said, to wait
until values commence to decline, but once the
f armor is convinced that the prices aro coming
down he rushes his stook on to the market and
at once rids himself of any anxiety in the mat-
ter. When wheat was selling at 48c a few
months ago many people prophesied that it
would never realize a dollar again and that the
good old days had departed forever, but the
prospects for $1 wheat aro brighter than the
most sanguine could have ,loped for even a
fortnight since.
