QUEER BOOK-KEEPING.
In a certain small New England
town, where everything is conducted
in the most primitive style, the man
who unites the calling of grocer, pro-
vision dealer, ice man and plutnber iq
one person has a somewhat unique
method of keeping accounts, He dis-
dains a ledger, which he characterizes
as 'a muddlin', onnecessitous contriv-
ance,' and keeps all his accounts with
his customers in his various lines of
business, on a pine board. This board
islttned off anceevery six months, and
a fresh account is started. Bills are
never supposed to run over, and as
everybody knows when 'planing -day'
comes around, and the people are all
honest and well-to-do, this remarkable
system seldom results in complications.
One day, however, a citizen who had
been away for a few weeks walked in-
to the little country store and offered
to settle his account.
'I reckon 'twas about a dollar, but I
ain't plumb sure,' remarked the man,
fingering a bill.
The storekeeper took out his pine
board, and consulted its surface
through his spectacles.
'I cal'late you don't owe me anythin',
he said at last, putting the board back
on the counter.
'Why, yes 1 do,' persisted the man.
'I bought a whole mess o 'sugar an'
m'lasses an' so on three months or so
back, an' there was a pair o' rubbers
fer m' wife too. if 1 rec'llect rightly.'
'0, three months back,' said the
store -keeper, thoughtfully. 'Well,
now, I can't say as t' that, fer you see
I've planed her off sence then, an' start-
ed aout agin' an' your rec'nin' was
shaved off'n the board along with the
rest. You ain't obleeged to pay me
nothin', 's fur's I ken see, but you ken
make it a leetle somethin' if you're so
minded, or you ken pay what you
rec'llect, or let the hull thing go—jest
as you feel.'
There was a little hesitation on the
part of the former customer, but, to
his credit be it said, he at last handed
over the dollar bill, said he wanted no
chane, and departed with a proud
consciousness of virtue.

A UNIQUE SENTENCE.
One of the most unique sentences
ever passed by a regularly constituted
court on this continent, and there
have been curious ones, was that im-
posed not long ago by a Missouri
magistrate. An illiterate prisoner was
bronght before him. He was totally
unable to read or write, so he was sen-
tenced to imprisonment until he learn-
ed to read.
At the same time a prisoner who
could both read and write was brought
up. Him the magistrate sentenced to
imprisonment until he had taught the
illiterate prisoner to read. We are
told it just took three weeks to work
out the sentence. Our contemporary
observes: "Isn't this the solution of
the vexing problem of illiteracy?" No
doubt if the "horse sense" displayed by
the Missouri magistrate *Its generally
followed ignorance of one of the R's
would almost disappear from the
criminal class.

THE "SOCIAL" PHASE OF THE
WHISKEY DRINKING IN ITS
TRUE LIGHT.
Mr Perry was a1 Southern gentleman,
exceeding polite and a very temperate
man. One day he met an acquaintance
who called out "Halloo Perry! I was
just going to get a drink. Come in
and take something."
"Thank you," said Perry. I don't
care for anything."
"But" persisted the other, "come in
and take something, just for sociabili-
ty's sake."
"I want to be sc ciable," answered
Perry. "I am anxious to be sociable,
but I can't drink with you."
"All right," growled the friend. "If
you don't want to he sociable, I'll go
without drinking." •
The two men walked silently along
for a minute or two, the sociable man
in a state of great irritation, until Perry
suddenly halted in front of a drug
store.
"I'm not feeling well to -day," said
he with a pleasant smile, "and I think
I'll go in here and get a dose of castor
oil. Will iyou join Ise?
"What!" exclaimed the other. "In
a dose of castor oil?"
"Yes, I'll pay for it."
"Ughl" cried the sociable man with a
wry tate. "I hate the stuff."
"But I want you to take a glass of
oil with me just to be sociable, you
know."
"I won't do it."
"Indeed, my friend," said Perry
gravely, "your sociable whiskey is just
as distasteful to me as my oil is to
you. Don't you think I have as much
reason to be offended with you as you
with me?"
The sociable man saw the point; and
it would be money. health, and morals
saved if the lesson could, be firmly im-
planted' in the mind of every young
man in the land.
THICKNESS OF A SOAP BUBBLE
The most powerful of the' m odern
microscopesNwill render a point one
hundred thousandth part of an inch in
diameter perfectly visible. While this
is true beyond a doubt, there are rea-
sons for believing that a single mole-
cule of matter is much smaller even
than that. One reason for this belief
has been deduced from calculations
made on the soap bubble. Scientists
have made measurements of the thick-
ness of the envelope of soapy water
inclosing the air of the bubble when it
had become so thin as to produce rain-
bow tints. At the appearance of the
shade of violet it was one-fourth of the
thickness of the length of an ordinary
violet wave of light (one sixty thous-
andth of an incb), thus making the
thickness equal to one two hundred
thousandth of an inch.
As the bubble continued to expand a
black patch formed near the end of the
pipe from which the bubble was being
blown. Measurements were then tak-
en to ascertain the thickness of the
black portion of the bubble; and the
experimenters were astonished beyond
measure when they found the thick-
ness (or thinness) to be only one fifty
millionth cf an inch.
EXPERIENCE HAS PROVED IT.
A triumph in medicine was attained
when experience proved that Soo-tt's Emul-
sion would not only stop the t -ogress of
pulmonary Consumption, but by its con -
tinned use, health and vigor can be fully
restored.
COLD IN THE HEAD AND HOW TO
CURE IT.
One of the most unpleasant and danger-
ous maladies that afflicts Canadiang at this
season is cold in the head. Unpleasant,
because of the dell, heavy heaeaohe, in-
flammed nostrils and other disagreeable
symptoms accompanying it; and danger-
ous, .because if neglected it develops into
catarrh, with its disagreeable hawking and
spitting. foul breath freguent loss of taste
and smell, and in many cases ultimately
developing into consumption. Nasal Balm
is the only remedy yet discovered that will
instantly relieve cold in the head and cures
in a few applications, while its faithful use
will effectually eradicate the worst case of
catarrh. Capt. D. H. Lyon, president of
the C.P.R. Car Ferry, Prescott, Ont., says
—"I used Nasal Balm for a prolonged case
of cold in the head. Two applications ef-
fected a cure in lees than 24 hours. I
would not take $100 for my bottle of Nasal
Balm, if I could not replace it." Sold by
all dealers, or sent by mail postpaid at 50
cents per bottle, by addressing G. T. Ful-
ford & Co., Montreal.

morning the body of Blanche Lamont was
found in a small room in the steeple• The

KNIGHTS OF LABOR.
J. F. Browning, carpenter and joiner, of
Kingston, Ont., writes the following testi-
monial :—
Gentlemen,—I was troubled with my
kidneys for ten years and was compelled to
arise four and five times a night to urinate.
The pains in my back were terrible.
I have used enough plasters and pills to
stook a drug store, and obtained no relief.
The doctors pronounced my case hopeless
and advised me to go to Toronto Hospital,
and I made up my mind to go, when I read
your advertisement in the Toronts Evening
News, calling your Pill the great K. and L.
Pill, whioh I took the meaning to be the
KNIGHTS OF LABOR PILL,, and being
myself a member of the Order I had con-
fidence in the name, and I pronounce them
the workingman's friend, for since taking
them regular for three months, 1 can say I
am entirely cured, and had I taken them
years ago, would have saved hutfdreds o
dollars in doctors' bills. Very truly yours
