In butchers' cattle the feeling was a little easier at the Western Cattle Yards. Buying for export was not active for the want of the proper kind of cattle, prices were 513. In hogs there was a good trade done, but the feeling was only steady. Butchers' cattle run from 3 to 4c. Hogs, 5 to 51 live. MONTREAL HORSE MARKET There was quite a little activity in the horse market- this week: Arrivals Fitiveinoreased perceptibly, and the demand shows an appreci- able expansion. There is no material change in prices, but the flrm tendency developed a week ago is more pronounced, and the consensus of opinion is that values on heavy draught horses are going higher. • Most of last week's business in heavy horses was transacted on the basis of $75 to 3110, while good drivers sold from $100 to $150. MONTREAL LIVE STOCK MARKET& Tho general tone of the live stock situat ion is not materially altered from last week. Advices from the other side were fairly encouraging. - A private cable from Liverpool quoted cattle at fid to 6th. and cows 55d. There was only a fair butchers' market at the Point, and good stock sold at from 4 to 44c. The demand was very slow. Hogs were also slow, with a small busi- ness on the basis of $5 to $5.25 THE EGG SITUATION. Messrs D. Gunn, Flavell & Co., in a circular, give some seasonable hints on the practice of country dealers and farmers holding eggs till they are unseasonable and unprofitable to handle alike to the shipper and the commission houses. They say: -At the commencement of another egg season permit us to again call your attention to the importance of handling your eggs promptly and not holding until they become stale. In this city last summer thou- sands of dozens of eggs were sent to the dump, and tens of thousands of dozens were almost useless because they reached market too old. Our chief market now for eggs is Great Britain, and it requires care and skill to overcome the distance and land the eggs in good order, but all the caro and skill is in vain if the egg is not fresh when it reaches the packer. We there- fore ask you to impress on your farmers the importance of marketing their eggs promptly and regularly while they are at their best, and we also beg of you to dispose of them promptly and regularly, and not to impair their value by waiting for larger shipments or holding for a rise in price. The volume of this business Io now largo, and, with the co-operation of pro- ducers, local dealers and exporters, it may bo indefinitely increased. We therefore ask you, in your own interest as well as in the interest of the trade generally, to give this matter the care and attention its importance demand. Tuesday afternoon as train No. 5 from -the south was nearing Paisley, Engineer Prine noticed a dog just ahead on the track, and when very close the dog sprang from the track, only to reveal the fact that a child named Cormack, about 3 years of age, bad been behind it. The engine struck the child on the head, causing instant death. No blame can be attached to the driver. Daniel Brooke, one of Brantford's oldest and most respected citizens, died Wednes- day morning. Deceased went to Brant- ford some 48 years ago, and opened a law office, which be had carried on there ever since. He leaves a family of grownn-np children.
