BEEF IN ENGLAND.
London, April 16. -American beef in Engl
has not followed the advance in America, but
has recently actually decreased in price.
MANITOBA BEEF SCARCE.
Winnipeg, April 16. -The price of beef cattle
in Manitoba has gone up the past month and
there is a scarcity. This is because the buyers
for large American houses have been purchas-
ing all the cattle they could find. American
buyers have never before came into this market.
TORONTO LIVE STOCK
The Mail of Wednesday says: There has been
a rapid advance in cattle in the live stock ma
keta in 'Toronto during the last two or three•
weeks. Yesterday at the Western cattle yards
shipping cattle were quoted a, high as 5 to 51e
per pound, and butchers' cattle of good quality
sold easily at 4 to 11c per pound for choice cat-
tle. This is an advance in the best grades of
nearly two cents per Ib. within a month. Hogs
are much higher, having advanced in about
four weeks from $1.10 to .85.25 per cwt. for the
best hogs.
MONTREAL HORSE MARKET
Montreal, April l5 -Dulness hasibeen the chief
characteristic of the horse market for the past
few weeks, but there are indications of improve-
ment now. Inuring the past few days unumber
of American and English buyers have been in
the city, and their purchases have been quite
ex'.ensive. Tho demand at present is almost
exclusively confined to heavy draught horses,
but two American buyers havo paid Roane at-
tention to light drivers, of which a load or so
has been taken. Last week (lithe loads of
draught horses changed hands at from $75 to
$150 each. The market is really very firm, and
a great many are of the opinion that higher
prices will soon bo realized. Theitendeucy of
western markets is also upwards.
THE ADVANCE IN CATTLE.
It seems clear that the advance in prices of
cattle and moat so noticeable lately is due,
says Bradstroets's. to shortage in supply. The
low prices that prevailed the past three years
made it unprofitable for farmers and ranch -
men to carry large numbers. The drought last
year and high prices of feed necessitated un-
usual close marketing. Hard tines also caused
free selling. The prospective supply in the
west is 25 to 40 por cent short of last year, and

There wag a decided contrast between the
live stock markets Monday and theeo a week
ago. Monday's business at both the east and
wast end was practically at a standstill and
prices sagged considerably. Butchers paid 3e
to 4}c at the east end abattoir for small lots of
cattle, that ls, of course, the fa,cy stock. Com-
mon stock and culls were neglected at from 20
to 2tc. A few lambs were offered and they
sold at from $2 to $5. The popular idea two
weeks ago was that rates wore going to be
high, and, while the present figures quoted cer•
tainly carry out guesses made at that time, a
very strong feeling has developed, suggesting
the extreme probability that holders of space
will moderate their views within a very short
time. It would be difficult to define the exact
tendency of rates at the present moment, but it
is safe to say that shippers as ageneral rule are
not disposed t0 advance their bide.
