a;ine's Celery Compound
the World's Best Spring
Medicine "Makes
,rcople Well."
'Ln Spring time nature commences to don
6 fresh attire. She puts on fresh garments
and decks hermit with fresh beauties. She
%;brows aside the dull and dead condition of
winter with its aconmulated impurities,
end is infused with a new and vigorous
In like manner, at this season, should all
tnen and women banish the weights and
`= `:burdens of impurities with which the sys-
', Item is filled. The blood is filled and ologg-
'tea'with poison and disease; the nerves are
'week; the muscles are flabby and relaxed.
'The whole system is like a disordered houee;
it requires cleansing and setting in order,
'that all the machinery may work safely
Rand harmoniously.
Thousands who have been cleansed and
( made strong by Paine's Celery. Compound,
'willingly support, the assertion that this me-
tdioine cleanses and rejuvenates the human
taystem in spring time, in a way that
no other medicine can do. It gives new
:life, fresh red blood, vigor and strength to
'the weak, nervous, rhoumatio and dyspej-
tic, and makes the skin of those suffering
from blood disease as sott and clean as that
of a little child.
Mr D. McMahon, of Peterboro, Ont.,
thankful for new and fresh blood and re-
newed health, writes as follows:
"I have great pleasure in testifying to
n'tite fact that Paine's Celery Compound has
caused a remarkable change in my condi-
lion. I was troubled by a' very bad kind of
Eczema on my face, and in patches over
-my body for four years; and was under
-treatment of three doctors at different per-
dode. I have also tried other remedies, but
a11 proved useless. At lsst I bought a hot -
Ile of Paine's Celery Compound, and put
in Iodide of Potassium, as recommended
on the label, The one bottle did me so
:much good that I bought five bottles more,
and now am happy to say I am perfectly
.cured, and completely free from that
,troublesome disease."
TWO IRISH ANECDOTES.
We have so often laughed at Pat for his
droll errors of speech that it is pleasant to
laugh with him occasionally at the expense
of some one else. It is possible to do this
when we recall the old tale of the Yankee
and the Irishman, who were riding along a
country road together, when they came to
a gallows.
"See that, Pat?" said the Yankee, with a
smile. 'Where would you be if the gallows
bad its due?"
"Bolding alone!" said Pat, quietly.
Another funny tale is told of a rather
idle Irish boy on board a man-of-war. It
was very difficult to keep him at work, and
the boatswain who had charge of him was
much annoyed at the boy's laziness. See-
ing him on the maintop one morning, gaz-
inglidly out at the sea, the boatswain called
.ont to him:
"Come out of that, ye rashcal! Come
down out of that, an' oi'll give yez a dozcn
whacks wid me rope? '
"Faith, sorr," replied tha boy, "oi

HEALTH RESTORED.
APPETITE REGAINED.
STRENGTH RETURNED.
DI,TBEBBINO cONBTIPA1ION CUBED BY B. B. B.
Gentlemen.—For three years I have been
terribly troubled with that:distressing com-
plaint, constipation, and tried different
medicines until last spring, when I com-
menced taking Burdock Blood Bitters, and
after the use of five bottles had no more of
my terrible suffering. 'Before I began us-
ing B.B.B. my appetite had almost gone
and I was thin and weak, and after the use
of each bottle I could, and so could others,
see a wonderful change in my looks, and I
felt my strength returning to me.

Letters have been received at the Ontario
Immigration Department making anxious
inquiries as to the whereabouts of an
Englishman named Edward Arthur Her-
riott, who, if living, is about 82 years of
age and was last heard from by letter dated
Christman, 1878. He was then in some
part of Ontario and had been in the em-
ployment of a farmer named Sheppard.
In that letter he stated that be bad insured
his life for £260 sterling, which, in the
.event of his death, world come to his mo-
ther.. Any information concerning him
may be addressed to the Ontaria Immigra-
tion Department.
TUE QUEBN'S AUTQUR.l,f'kf,
A student in S raouse University, who is
deeply interested in autograpb-oolleoting,
peeped a polite requeet for an. autoprapb,
enclosing a postal note for 260, and ad-
dressed the envelope, "Victoria, Queen of
Great Britain, London, England." Re
waited three months foo' a response. Then
he wrote again making the same polite re-
quest, but added a postscript to the effect
that in his opinion either the autograph or
the quarter ought to be forth -coming. At
the end of a little more then a mouth he
received the autggrtiph.
I would not enoourage this sort of thing
among Amesloan boys and girls. The
Queen never knew, of oourse, that the stu-
dent had made such a request, yet the aut-
ograph was genuine. Did you ever see
Queen Viotoria's autograph? I have seen
it many times in the British Museum,
among records of Parliament in Somerset
House, London, and on exchange copies of
treaties in the State Department, Wash-
ington,
Queen Viotoria writes a coarser hand
now than she used to do, but it is still firm
and full of character. She now signs her-
self, "Victoria, R. I." -the letters on the
same line with her name. Before she used
the letter "I" she used to write the "R
beneath her name, connecting it with the
final stroke of the "a" in her name by a
rather stiff flourish. Of course the "R"
stands for Great Britain and Ireland, and
the "I" Empresa of India, the Latin initials.
being used.
COLD IN THE HEAD AND HOW TO
CURE IT.
One of the most unpleasant and danger-
ous maladies that afflicts Canadiangat this
season is cold in the head. Unpleasant,
because of the dull, heavy heaeacbe, in-
flammed nostrils and other disagreeable
symptoms accompanying it; and danger-
ous, because if neglected it develops into
catarrh, with its disagreeable hawking and
spitting. foul breath ,frequent loss of taste
and smell, and in many cases ultimately
developing into consumption. Nasal Balm
is the only:remedy yet discovered that will
instantly relieve cold in the head and cures
in a few applications, while its faithful use
will effectually eradicate the worst case of
catarrh. Capt. D. H. Lyon, president of
the C.P.R. Car Ferry, Prescott, Out., says
—"I used Nasal Dalin for a prolonged case
of cold in the head. Two applications ef-
fected
f•
fectetda-corps-in less than 24 hours. I
wou"td not take $100 for my bottle of Nasal
Balm, if I could not replace it." Sold by
all dealers, or smut by mail postpaid at 10
cents per bottle, by addressing 0. T. Ful-
ford & Co., Montreal.
A QUEER TOWN.
"This is a queer town, this Boston,"
said an old country gentleman who ar-
rived from a remote rural district for
a visit to a friend in Roxbury, "I had
to pay twenty-five cents down town
for a little dish of white ice-cream;
and then I rode miles and miles on one
of the new tangled car's for five cents,
I gave the man fifty cents, and I
shouldn't have thought anythingof it
if I'd got back no change at all. It
was worth fifty cents just to hitch up
to go so far. Only five cents for all
that ride, andtwenty-five dents fur two
spoonfuls of white cream! Queer
town this!"

Messrs Edmanson, Bates & Co., Toronto:
GENTI.F.MEN,—I think it is due to you to
let you know the benefits I have received
from Dr. Chase's kidney -liver pills. I
have been suffering off and on for three
years from bladder trouble with a con-
stant desire to urinate, with its accompany-
ing weakness. Medicine furnished by a
skilful physician afforded me temporary
relief, but the trouble would return, often
at very awkward times. I was persuaded
to try the rills an,1obtained relief from the
first. Before I ha,, taken one 25c. box I
felt better then I had for years, and have
not the slightest symptoms of the coin-
plaint since. As there are, no doubt, many
others who are suffering from like troubles
and to whom a cure would be a similar
boon, you are welcome to use this com-
munication as you please. I remain

Tariff reform will help to restore the
prosperity of the farmers, and the
prosperity of Canada depends upon the
prosperity of the farmers, so that man-
ufacturers, with the exception of those
dependent upon pap, and workingmen
and laborers and all large classes will
he better off in Canada under free trade
than under protection. Under protec-
tion the number of farmers in Canada
has been reduced from 656,712 in 1881
to 640,506 in 1801. The home market
for manufacturers has been actually
disappearing under protection, and the
home producers for foreign markets
upon whose prosperity the country de-
pends have been reduced.—Montreal

BETRAYED. -
A stylishly dressed young woman
was brought up before the police magi-
strate at B—,for stealing ribbons out
of a shop. he clerk of the court had
seen her c. ),verse with her lawyer,
and was therefore greatly surprised.
when, in reply to his enquiry as to ber
name and address, she ,merely shook
her head.
"Sheis a Frenchwoman," the lawyer
explained, "and does not understand
German. Just put down: Marie La-
touche."
The elm k was incredulous. "How
old is she?" he asked.
"Twenty-two," replied the legal ad-
viser.
The clot k pretended not to have
heard correctly and said:
"Thirt y -two?"
"No;twen ty-two." the fair caitive
blurted out, as she clapped her hand
on her mouth and burst out laughing.
"Ahl•" said the clerk. -"I hen you can

derstand it?"
15 YEARS OF ITCHING.
Wm. Golding, commercial traveller, 130
Esther St. Toronto, says: For 1:, years I
suffered untold misery from Itching Piles,
sometimes called pin worms. Mauy and
many weeks have I had to lay off the road
from this trouble. I tried eight other pile
ointments and so called remedies with no
permanent relief to the intense itching
and stinging, which irritated by scratching
would bleed and ulcerate. One halt a box
of Chase's Ointment cured nie completely.
SHANTY -BOAT PEOPLE OF THE
WESTERN RIVERS.
Shanty -boating is not necessarily in-
born; individuals may drop into and
out of it, as with other experiences.
A workman in a river -bank f'ac'tory
buys or builds a shanty -boat because
it is c'heaper.tlian paying rent: then,
losing his job, he slips away on the
current, seeking new work, and almost
insensibly sinks into the human drift,
until perhaps an equally fortuitous
event casts him ashore again; but
more often, like the Renetny, he has
the instinct in his blood, and the
shanty -boat people spend their lives
moving at, ranch ».0 tend by impulse,
now driving along lashed to a low
pushed by some great snorting steant-
er, now floating on the current with a
square of old sacking for a sail or a
pair of sweepers to propel and guide,
now bleached by the falling river, and
left hidden far up in the cottonwoods,
like Sleeping amphibians en the shore.
For they rue not always on the
nn,ve; wh.le essentially and necessarily
in the eosin a company of rovers,
many of them, like the birds, migrate,
if at all, only at certain seasons. The
t•avorite time is the late win tet, when
the ice has disappeared and the high-
est floods are over, but the waters are
still well up on the banks. Then the
boatman buys or :legs a fr iendly tow
up stream, or drops down with the cur-
rent. until, having found a landing to
his taste, he pulls well up to the hank,
blocks up under the outer "gannel"
to keep his craft, level as the water
falls, and •'grounds out" contentedly
for a shore residence of months, or
even yeas s.
His boat thus becomes not so notch
a rneans of navigation as a dwelling
adapted to the peculiar conditions of
his environment. As his abode is more
fixed, he generally becomes a better
citizen and a more substantial one, and
with increasing means he surrounds
himself by a flotilla where his land -
dwelling brother would add rooms or
sheds to his building; chicken -coop
boats, wood -shed boats, out -house
boats, Gather around the main craft,
are moored to it when the river rises,
and float away with it in the migra-
tions.
