While we tell you about our GENTS NEW SPRING HATS. When we took stock 1st of
February last, we had our Hat and Cap stook reduced to a minimum, so that when we
bought for spring our supply was almost entirely new, so mush so indeed that we lay before
the public only what is worn by stylish people in centres of fashion, Of course the Fedora
shape is still prominently to the front as being the correct shape for spring, and in these we
have Blacks, Browns, Drabs and Nutrias with light colored bindings and bands to suit the
shades. Hard Hats are here in all the leading shapes and colors. We sell you a regular $3
Fedora for $2, a regular $2.60 Fedora for $1.75. Remember these are in any color you wish.

The great Frederick was very fond
of snuff. He had a box of it put on
every mantle -piece in the palace. One
day he saw his page helping himself
liberally. He said nothing then, but a
little while afterward be told the boy
to bring him the box. "Take a pinch,"
said the king; "how do you find it?"
"Excellent, sir." "And the box?" "Su-
perb, sir." "Very well," returned
Frederick, "keep it, then; it does not
hold enough for two."
Once Mr Gladstone had been cutting
down a tree in the presence of a large
concourse of people, including a num-
ber of cheap trippers. When the tree
had fallen and the prime minister and
some of the family who were with
him were moving away, there was a
rush for the chips. One of the trippers
secured a big piece and exclaimed:
"Hey, lads, when I dee, this shall go
in my coffin!" Then cried his wife, a
shrewd, motherly old woman,with a
merry twinkle in her eye: "Sam, my
lad, if thouy,,d_.worship God as thou
worships G4adstone, thou'd stand a
better chance of going where thy chip
wouldna burn!"

NEWS NOTES
Gen. Neal Dow, the father of prohi-
bition, on Thursday celebrated his 91st
birthday at Portland, Me. He is in
excellent health.
At a meeting of the Hamilton Pres-
bytery, on Tuesday, it was decided to
nominate the Rev Prof. D. M. Gordon,
D.D., as moderator of the General As-
sembly.
C. A. Mallory, Grand President of
the Patrons of Industry, has been left
a legacy of $40;000. lie intends to give
up farming and move into the town of
Cobourg.
The Patrons of East Bruce held a
convention at Formosa, Wednesday,
and nominated Mr James Tolton, of
Walkerton, as their candidate at the
general elections.
At the meeting of the Council of
Chosen Friends, Wednesday, the elec-
tion of officers was the principal busi-
ness of the day, Mr W. P. Bell, of
Kingston being elected President.
A monster exhibition of colonial re-
sourses will be opened in Agricultural
Hall, London, Eng., next July. Gen-
eral Booth -of the Salvation Army will
organize the exhibits of Canadian pro-
duce.
In the Legislature a resolution moved
by iter Whitney, endorsing the Domin-
ion Government's proposal to advance
20 cents a pound on butter for ship-
ment to England was voted down by a
majority of 39.
In the Legislature on Wednesday a
resolution of Dr. Meacham's condemn-
ing the present method of appointing
Registrars and county officials was vot-
ed down by 56 to 23, the Patrons sup-
porting the Government.
At a meeting of Church of England
representatives, Wednesday, it was
decided that a new diocese should be

Grey, Simcoe and North Wellington.
Other changes are also recommended.
The Hyams Brothers, Toronto, on

The Chatham Banner directs atten-
tion to the figures of the bean market
in Toronto and Detroit, hand-picked
stock being quoted at $1.15 to $1.20 in
the former city, and $1.70 to $1.75 in
the latter. Kent is deeply interested
in these prices, as beans are one of its
best ,money crops. He is a courageous
high tax advocate who, in Western
Ontario, talks against the removal of
every unnecessary t grade restriction.
The Liberals will go into this battle
with every advantage. They have the
advantage of being the outside and
having no sins in office for which to
answer. The Conservatives labor un-
der the disadvantage of the fact that
the dozen men who form a close cor-
poration at Ottawa run the party
instead of the party managing them,
and they must fight with the burden
of corruption and whitewash and ex-
travagance weighing heavily upon
them. -Toronto Star.
BE ON YOUR GUARD.—We have time and
again warned our readers against having
anything to do with men who go from door
to door soliciting orders for goods from out-
side houses. In ninety-nine oases out of
one hundred they are never properly tilled
the article fnrnishod very 3ften being far in-
ferior to the sample shown. Deal with your
home merchants, who are responsible
men, and when any mistake occurs are al-
ways willing to rectify' it. Their prices, too
are right, and you know you are getting the
aloof your money.
