Thousands in the Conuuer- cialMetropolis know what the Great -Spring Medi- cine Has Done. In the great archdiocese of Montreal, the parish of St. Anne's ie one of the larg- est and most important. The parish is a populous one, and the work of the dozen or more clergymen who devote their time and talents to the spiritual and charitable in - tercets of the people, is heavy and never- ending. In this thickly and congested 'parish the siok and suffering are numerous, but ohristian help and consolation is ever near in the hour of danger. In scenes of sick- ness and disease this great parish has been blessed by an agency that has saved thousands of lives in other parts of our Dominion. We now refer to that marvel- lous medicine Paine's Celery Compound, so well and favorably known in every Can- adian home. .The popular clergymen of St. Anne's have, from time to time, heard wonderful reports from their parishioners of the magnificent work accomplished by Paine's Celery Compound. Fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters have been raised to health and strength. Those pronounced incurable by physicians have been snatch- ed from the jaws of death. The Rev. P. Rioux, one of St. Anne's most popular 'clergymen, knowing about the good work done by Paine's Celery Compound, and having experienced most satisfactory results from its use in his own case, writes as follows:— "I am fully convinced both by personal experience and by the statements of many parishioners intrusted to my care, that the celebrated medicine Paine's Celery Com- pound deserves a high recommendation. I therefore, willingly indorse the testimon- ials already given in its behalf." BRISTOL'S al Sarsaparill Cures Rheumatism, Gout, Sciatica, Neuralgia, Scrofula, Sores, and all Eruptions. Utrroap, Oct. 14, 1894, Messrs Edmanson, Bates & Co., Toronto: GENT1 EMEN,—I think it is due to you to let you know the benefits I have reoeived from Dr. Chase's kidney -liver pills. I have been suffering off and on for three years from bladder trouble with a con - atom desire to urinate, with its accompany- ing weakness. Medicine furnished by a skilful physician afforded me temporary relief, but the trouble would return, often at very awkward times: I was persuaded to try the pills andobtained relief from the first. Before I had taken one 26o. box I felt better than I had for years, and have .tot the slightest symptoms of the com- plaint since. As there are, no doubt, many others who are suffering from like troubles and to whom a pure would be a similar boon, you are weloome to use this com- munication as you please. I remain Yours faithfully, HENRY W. GILL, D,FO. Tobacco Company's Generosity; The George E. Tuokett & Sons Tobacco Co., Ltd. of Hsmilton, nine years ago in- stituted the commendable idea of present. ing a deed of a building lot each Christmas to their oldest active employee. This year .it was the good fortune of Mr Thos. Milligan to succeed to the firm's generosity, he hav- ing been with them for 21 years. In ad- dition to the lot he received a substantial cheque from the same source. The whole staff of the concern also Dame in for a gist, the day hands receiving an extra wee salary and the pieae hands a good siz turkey. Some time ago the Messrs Tuok turned their factory into a joint sto company, admitting many of the more i portant employees into partnership, a this additional evidence of a desire to sha with their men the prosperity cf the hou cannot help but bear fruit in inoreas energy and good -will among all who a fortunate enough to be connected with th enterprising concern. THE LITTLE MOTHER. There are not many more interes ing charities than the one which giv the young elder daughters of ver poor families in the city a summ outing for a day or a week. Ther are none more unwelcome to the fain lies from which the little worsen corn. For in all these families the elder siste is a sort of second mother; she save the first mother countless steps whe at home, and when the mother is awa from home she takes her place, clear ing up and cleaning as much as tea be, making the food ready. when then is any food, seeing to the fire and th room and the babies generally; an whether' the mother is at home o abroad this eldest child is always to b seen carrying in her arms or on he hip a baby big enough to give her spinal curvature. Although she always takes as goo care as she knows how of her especi baby, and sees that it has its full shar of any street entertainment goings and loves it as her own flesh, yet she does not always love babies as a race; one of her kind, taken out of town to a lonely house of elderly people, cried out with joy at being in a place where there were no babies! But they never' stay to think whether they love them or not; the babies are there to be cared for, amused, fed, and Lugged about, and they "mind" them as if that duty were a fact of the universe, something as natural and commonplace as the air or so much of the sky as they see. It -is not always easy; alien, to obtain the consent of the authorities of the poor home to the temporary departure of this valuable personage; she is far too necessary an article to them. When you ask for her you are remind- ed of the beggars in the Azores, who go begging with a servant to carry the bag; for the little creature is really as much a servant and general factotum in her home as the Marchioness was in the home of Miss Sally Brass. Of course, if she is gone she is sadly miss- ed; the next eldest may he too under- sized to struggle with the jug of Neer from round the corner, may not be discreet enough to he trusted with the other children and the snatches; and even if father and mother want the little girl to have an outing. in sweet - country air they do not see the way clear to doing without her. But all the same is it worth while to make the effort, to supply her place, if need he, by some other form of help, and to get the little maid away tinder the skies, and into a short experience of irresponsibility and freedom and joy, where for a brief time she, too, can he a child, and forget the load of care which is making her a little old woman. All who have seen the ec- stasy of the little girls when coming among green fields and hills and gar- dens, which seem to them like dreams, and into houses which seem palaces, will be glad to contribute liberally of their means to make it a more general and frequent delight. And fortunate children who already have homes in the country can do no sweeter or kind- er thing than to -raise money with fetes and fairs and rural entertain- mepts, in order to furnish the ineans for the little mothers to drop the bur- den of their cares and pick up their own strength in the midst of summer pleasures.—Harper's Bazar, SEND TO DAY. One of the most unpleasant and danger- ous maladies that afflicts Canadiang at this season is cold in the head. Unpleasant, because of the dull, heavy heaeache, in- flammed nostrils and other disagreeable symptoms accompanying it; and danger. • ous, because if neglected it develops i„to catarrh, with its disagreeable hawking and spitting. foul breath ,frequent loss of taste and swell, and in many cases ultimately developing into consumption. Nasal Bairn is the only:remedy yet discovered that will instantly relieve cold in the head and cures in a few applications, while its faithful use will effectually eradicate the worst case of catarrh. Capt. D. H. Lyon, president of the C.P.R. Car Ferry, Prescott, Ont., says —"I used Nasal Balm for a prolonged case' of cold in the head. Two applications ef- feated a cure in lees than '24 hours. I would not take $100 for my bottle of Nasal Balm, if I could not replace it." Sold by all dealers, or sent by mail postpaid at 50 cents per bottle, by addressing G. T. Ful• ford & Co., Montreal. A RUSSIAN SLED. Riding down hill on a cake of ice, would not seem to us vet y amusing, except, perhaps, to the spectators, who aright enjoy it as a sort of frozen tub -race. As a matter of fact, though, a cake of ice in the hands of a Russian boy will make a very goal and rapid sled. Ile saws out, x hlock that js longer than it is thick, and about high enough for a comfortable seat. Then he scoops out a hollow like a saddle a little hack of the middle of the upper surface, and upholsters it with straw or rags. ' It is then ready for its first trip down -hill, and if the rider is skil- ful he will make very good time on it. But carrying it hack to the top of the incline would he too hard work for even a Russian boy, and pushing it up hill would be about as had. A clever lad once thought of a better way, and all other boys have copied him ever since. He found a good rye straw, and began blowing through it at the front of the block with the end of the straw close to the ice. Soon be had a little hole in the block, as neatly drill- ed as a steel tool could have done it. In the course of an hour and a half he had driven a hole slantwise through the ice, coming out at the top just in front of the saddle. A stout stria' passed through the hole and knotted completed his sled, which could then be drawn up hill almost as easily as the best coaster that ever was made. if a boy is careful of his ice sled—and he is apt to be careful, for considerable work is necessary to make one—it will last all winter. Imagine him freezing on a new set of runners when the old ones have worn out!—Harper's Young People. HAVE A 'GREAT REPUTATION -.y3 HERE. J. B.
