A HORSE." rive a Bullet Into the Rend tet the Plage show,i by the Spot to the prowler. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has issued a card showing' how horses may bo killed scien- tifically: The information is especially for policemen, who are ordinarily called upon to dispose of sick or suffering ani - SUGAR PRICES. During 1893, A 1 granulated Sugar of Canadian manufacture sold in Montreal at ..an average of $4.93 per cwt. The same quality of sugar sold in New York at $5.17 per cwt on an average. That was a very agreeable fact to Canadians and knocked end- ways the prejudice that the Liberal press and speakers had been seeking to raise up against the Canadian sugar refiners. At the present time the comparison is much more favorable for the Cana- dian prices. The commercial news from Montreal of Aug. 2nd states as follows : "All refined grades of sugar are $1.00 per barrel cheaper here to -clay than in New York.". Mr. Laurier and Sir Richard may storm all they like against the present small protection to the sugar industry, but so long as millions of dollars of capital is profitably employed, thou- sands of men given daily wages, and our sugar men continue to supply us •t first-class article at prices that can't be beaten in other lands, Canadians will be more than satisfied and prepar- ed to say god -speed to the men who are managing this great Canadian in- dustry.. As Mc. Laurier is about to visitthe Northwest soon, and as he recently was dealing with the sugar question we hope he won't forget to state the figures we here give. That the information is greatly needed. both by policemen and citizens generally was made noticeable recently by an incident called to the, attention of Secretary Holbrook. A truck horse belonging to John Mor- ton broke one of its legs at the corner of Eddy and Taylor streets early in the morning. It was allowed to remain there suffering for many hours because no one could be found who would shoot it or who knew how to put it out of its misery. Morton tried to find it police- man who could or would kill the animal, but his search was in vain. Finally he wont to the office of the society men- tioned, and Mr. Holbrook himself went to the corner where the horse was lying and shot it. The animal died without a tremor. To shoot a horse so as to kill it in- stantly it is only necessary to aim so that the bullet will enter the brain by passing through a spot in the middle of the forehead above the eyes. The card issued by the society bears a drawing of a horse's head, showing the exact spot. —San Francisco Chronicle. • Winglsaui. Too late for last week. THANKSGIVING EXCUISIONISTS. — Messrs. E. When the heat of a tropieal or semi- tropical summer driesup every- pool and parches the ground to such an extent that it is difficult for animals not en- dowed with great powers of locomotion to obtain water, they compromise with nature by sleeping off the season of heat and scarcity. The winter sleeper's are all pretty well known ; but, owing'to the summer sleepers being for the most part inhabitants of tropical countries, far removed from the path of trained ob- servers, we are less acquainted with the species practicing that means of escap- ing the heat and drought of summer. Indeed at present only one mammal, the teuec, a hedgehoglike beast of Madagascar,. is known to do so. In South America and Africa various reptiles ee;tivate. Itt the plains of Venezuela the alligator, the land and fresh water tortoise, the boa constrictor and several sorts of the smaller kinds of serpent lie motionless during the hottest period of the tropical summer. But their dormancy is not so perfect as that of some hibernators In Brazil, Australia and the Cape Colony lizards, frogs, tor- toises and insects pass months of the rainless season enclosed in hard earth, and in India many species of fish live during the hot season in a torbid condi- tion, imbedded in the hardened clay.— Brooklyn Eagle, Qoughiflg1 For all the ailments of Throat' and Lungs;, t1}erelisno cute $Q, quick and permanent as Scotts Emulsion of Cpd-liver Oil. First, a book - rase with a great many books in it; next, a table that will keep steady when you write or work at it. Then several chairs that you can move and a sofa -that you can sit or lie upon. Next a cup - hoard with drawers; next, unless the bookcase and cupboard be very beauti- ful with painting or carvings, you will - want pictures or engravings, such as y'ou can afford, only not stopaps, but real works of art upon the wall, or else the wall itself must be ornamented with some beautiful or restful pattern ; and last, a vase or two for flowers. This is ail we shall want, especially if the floor be good , if it be,not, as, by the way, in a modern house it is pretty sure not to bo, I admit that a small carpet, that can be bundled out of the way in two min- utes, will be useful, and we must also take care that it be beautiful. We can add very little to these necessaries with- out troubling ourselves and hindering our work, our thought and our rest. MISS HOUGIITON'S CONCEILT.—The grandest amateur concert Which has ever taken place in Winghaur was that given by Miss Houghton and her pup- ils on Monday evening last. ft was a juvenile opera entitled "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." The cast of characters for the leading parts were :—Snow White, Miss Allia Chis- holm ; Queen, Miss Jennie Duffield ; Prince, Mr. M. Park; Harold (Hunts- man,) Mr. J. Stevenson, The play was interspersed with music, by Misses Fessant, Kent, Hennings, Leary and Kerr. While all the actor's took the parts well, special credit is due to Miss Chisholm. Near the: close of the last 'tet Mr. Park was presented with a rose. The presentation was trade by it small boy who had been sent up by some of Mr. Park's admirers in the audience. Miss Houghton deserves great credit for the splendid manner in which the play was presented, The hall was well filled and no doubt she will he financial- ly better off and deservedly so. May we soon have another one. (2) SHILon's CURE is sold on a guarwn tee. It cures Incipient Consumption. It is the best Cough Cure. Only one cent a 'lose; 25 cts., 50 cts. and $1.00 per bottle.
