Whosoever Aearetht
Men and Wanes Who Are
Martyri to Rheumatism
Can Be Thoroughly
Cured,
Paine's Celery Compound The
Infallible Remedy.
The great modern triumph of medical
science is Paine's Celery Compound.
Its marvellous curing powers are talked
of in every quarter of the civilized
world, and the ablest physicians are
astonished with its life-giving and
health -restoring results.
As a positive cure for rheumatism
and sciatica, Paine's Celery Compound
has no equal known to man. In Can-
ada alone this wonderful medicine has
cured more rheumatic men and women
than have been cured by all other com-
bined agencies. The most obstinate
and most desperate cases have been
met with perfect success. Hundreds
of testimonials from the very best peo-
ple of Canada support every claim
made for Paine's Celery Compound.
Are you suffering from rheumatism
or sciatica, dear reader? Have you
`net with reverses and failures in the
past through the use of deceptive and
worthless preparations? There Etre
many we know who have been driven
deeper into sufferings and agonies
owing to experiments with pills and
mixtures and compounds that are
positively harmful and dangerous.
If you are now using .tny such medi-
cines stop therm at once, if you value
your life. Ask your druggist or deal-
er for Paine's Celery Compound, that
will surely and certainly banish your
troubles.
The following letter from Mr. G. J.
McDonald, merchant tailor, of Corn-
wall, Ont., demonstrates the superior-
ity of nature's medicine :-
"After having given your Paine's
Celery Compound a thorough testing,
I am pleased to sa'y a few words in its
favor. For three years I suffered ter-
ribly from rhuematism. It seemed
to me that I was forced to endure all
the agonies and pains that A. mortal
could possibly experience from the
dreadful disease.
"While suffering I tried many of the
advertised medicines and also doctor's
prescriptions; hut never found a cure
until I procured it supply of Paine's
Celery Compound from McHaffl &
Elvidge, druggists, of this town.
Paine's Celery Compound worked like
a charm -it seemed to strike at 'the
very root of my trouble. I am now
cured ; all pains are banished, and in
every respect I am a new man.
"I shall always consider it a pleasure
and duty to strono•ly recommend
Paine's Celery Compound to all who are
afflicted with rheumatism."
A MOTH -CATCHING PLANT.
It Close. Ito Jaws and Catches Its Yle.
Um,
A New Zealand correspondent sug-
gests that the ravages of certain lanite
in some countries, might bo greatly re-
stricted by the introduction of the New
Zealand moth catching plant, "araugia
albons." This plant, which is a native
of southern Africa, wag introduced to
New Zealand quite accidentally about
seven years ago, and since then it has
been extensively propagated there. on
account of its effective service as a kill-
er of destructive moths. Wherever the
climate is mild the plant is an exceed -
free grower; it twines and climbs
with great luxuriance, and produces
immense numbers of white or pinkish
flowers, which have a very agreeable
scent. These flowers attract innumer-
able moths, On a summer evening a
hedge of araugia will be covered by a
perfect cloud of moths, and in the
morning there will not be a single tiower
that does not imprison one or two, and
sometimes as many as four insects of
various sizes and genera. The action
of the "araugia" is purely mechanical.
The calyx of the flower is rather deep,
and the receptacle for its sweet juices is
placed at its baso. Attracted by the
powerful scent and the prospect of
honey, the moth dives down the calyx,
and protrudes its proboscis to reach the
tempting food. But before it can do so
the proboscis is nipped between two
strong, hard, black pincers, which
guard the passage, and once nipped
there is no escape for the moth, which is
held as in a vise by the extreme end of
the proboscis, and dies miserably. The
"rationale" of the process is not yet ex-
plained. Tho proboscis is so very slightly
inserted between the pincers (only a
minute fraction of an inch) that it appar-
ently can not affect the generative
organs of the plant, unless these
may be the pincers themselves, whose
actual contact may be necessary tor re-
production. Upon dissection, the pin-
cers, even in their ordinary position, are
invariably found to be almost in contact,
the separating interval being apparent
under a strong lens. It is therefore
hard to understand why such a process
as the destruction of a moth should be
necessary to close this already minute
gap. But, at all events, the thing is
done, and effectively, and a plant of
araugia covering a space of ten yards in
length will destroy as many hundred
moths every night, and, consequently,
prevent the ravages of fifty times as
many larvae. It is, however, a singu-
lar tact that in New Zealand, where the
plant has often been cultivated for the
express purpose of destroying the de-
tested codlin moth ("earpocapsa po-
menatla"), that wily insect declines to
enter the trap.

Value of Royal Crnwnn.
Regal crowns are an expensive lux-
ury for the people of those backward
countries which still prefer to have
kings to presidents. One of the most
costly crowns in existence is that of the
king of Portugal. The jewels which
ornament it are valued at $3,000,000.
The crowns which the czar of Russia
wears on special occasions is also one of
the most prescious in the world. • The
cross which surmounts the crown is
composed of five magnificent diamonds
resting on a largo uncut but polished
ruby. The small crown of the czarina
contains according to authorities, the
finest stones ever strung, The crown of
the Queen of England, which is valued at
$1,000.000, contains a greatruby,a large
sapphire, sixteen small sapphires, eight
emeralds, four small rubies, 1.800 bril-
liants, 1,273 rose diamonds, four pear -
formed pearls and 260 of other shapes.
In his state clothes, including the
crown, the sultan of Johore wears dia-
monds worth 812,000,000. His collar,
his epaulets, his girdle and his cutis
sparkle with the precious stones. His
bracelets are of massive gold, and his
fingers are covered with rings which are
almost priceless. The handle and the
blade of his sword aro covered with
precious stones.
The most costly insignia of princely
dignity, however, are those of the sul-
tan, or maharajah, of Baroda, in India.
The chief ornament is a necklace of five
strings containing 500 diamonds, some
of which are as largo as hazelnuts. The
upper and lower rows consist of
emeralds of the same size.

The Bev. Dr. Benjamin Watson, a
venerable Episcopal clergyman, of
Philadelphia, tells the following anec-
dote of the late Dr. Stephen H. Tyng,
the elder, once rector of Holy Trinity,
Philadelphia, and afterward rector of
St. George's, in New York city : "13e -
fore Dr. Tyng came to this city," says
Dr. Watson, "he Was rector of a church
at Georgetown, now a part of Washing-
ton city. It was in the early days
of the century, when thatreat
statesman and orator, Henry Clay,
was in the heyday of his glory.
One Sunday evening DI'. Tyng ascend-
ed his pulpit and proceeded to deliver
a most eloquent sermon, His hearers
and ho realized simultaneously that his
words were unusually eloquent. In the
midst of an impassioned exhortation the
church door opened and a belated
Christian walked down the aisle and
took a seat. It was Henry Clay. Dr.
Tyng recognized him. g'uddenly and
unaccountably the preacher became
filled with a sense of his own insignifi-
cance as an orator in the presence of
this eloquent man. He broke down,
and floundered miserably through the
remainder of his sermon, which he
brought to a ;Reedy close."

Advertise well ! 'tis the
secret of Flory,
Sick to this principle

Advertise well, is the
lesson they teach.
Those who advertise in
