WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21st, 1894,
Sunset by iluron.
From o'er the great lake's breast the
western win],
--FI'*t'niug his eager spirit, round me
blows ;
And 1111 the cloudy squadrons, wind-
ward -lined,
Roll darkly eastward at the evening's
close.
Beyond the woods the glowing sunset
burns
In richer crimson o'er the water's
breast,
And twilight from above the gleam re-
turns,
And shuts the sunlight in the far-off
west.
Across the distant fields the cattle
call .
And bird's wild song comes trembling
on the breeze ;
While with its rhythmic thunder over
all
Swells the long surf -song from the
raging seas.
And down the darkling avenues of my
soul
Sweet memory beats her sunset gold-
en wings
Till from afar I hear the mighty roll
Of dal k, past years, with all their
vanished things.

The crush in the Toronto Massey
Music hall the other eveningwas en-
ormous. Persons commenceto flock
into the hall at 6 o'clock., and at 7.10 the
building being jammed as full as the
requirements of safety would permit,
the doors were closed. Many adjourn-
ed to the overflow meeting, conducted
at the Metropolitan church by the
Rev. T. W. Swan.
undertaking was and the weapon that
he was going to accomplish It with.
If God could use an old, dried-up stick
in His cause, He can use us now, al-
though some of us are very dry indeed.
I wish that we made more use of these
old instruments. We, with our fine
churches, organs, and so on, have got
things far too nice, and we are com-
mencing to think too much of these
first, and Qhristian work afterwards.
If I were now to divide this audience,
allowing two birds of you to go. as did
Gideon with his 32,C:0 men, when he
went up against the Midianites, people
would say : 'Moody has made the
biggest mistake of his life.' I do not
think, however, that I would be com-
mitting any error, as I would ascertain
who my workers were. We might
profitably have just such at sifting out
in our churches to -day. The kickers in
all of them are too numerous. When
any real reforms are suggested by the
majority,
THESE FEW CROAKERS
are always
ready to sit on it. Great
deeds have been done through the
most insignificant agencies. Sampson
slew 1,000 Philistines with nothing but
the jawbone of an ass, and David killed
Goliath with a pebble. Whatever you
do, be yourself. Don't try to he like
someone else. Make good use of your
talents, and the Lord will keep on
multiplying them. Do what work you
can to the best of your ability, in any
avocation, no matter how humble it
may be, and you will
SUCCEED IF YOU PERSEVERE.
Dorcas had only her needle. She con-
secrated it to the Lord, and set it i'1
motion. That needle has been going
ever since. You all have a mission in
life; be up and about it. Look at all
the Christians here. If you were all to
get to work, each in your own way,
to -morrow what a stir you would
make in Toronto. I remember the
early days, when I used to preach at
night in a little log schoolhouse on the
frontier. The first man who came to
the service would perhaps bring with
him a tallow candle, and each person
who came after him would have a
similar piece of candle or tallow in his
pocket, so that when the congregation
were finally gathered, we had plenty of
light. In bringing those lights, each
of those persons did something for the
Lord. If you are not a lighthouse, you
may be a candle dip. It is not neces-
sary for a lighthouse to blow trumpets
and horns to announce that it is shed-
ding light. It keeps right at the office
for which it is intended, and its light
is the evidence of its purpose. I would
rather have for an inscription over my
tonlbe," said the evangelist, in con-
clusion, "the words of the Lord con-
cerning the poor widow, 'She hath
done what she could,' than a monu-
ment of gold reaching clear up to the
skies."
DIAMOND DYES ARE THE
BRIGHTEST, STRONGEST
AND BEST.
AIR: SPRING! SPRING !GENTLE SPRING.
Dyes 1 Dyes 1 Diamond Dyes
At all seasons of the year,
Every wife and mother wise
Greet thee with the kindest cheer.
Autumn with its varied shades—
Russets dark, and brown and gold,
Reds and greens of summer glades—
All these colorings ye unfold.
Yet, while nature's colors fly,
Ye still bloom'neath changing sky.
Dyes !'Dyes 1 Diamond Dyes
Choicest colors in the land,
Onward 1 Forward ! as time flies
There will live no other brand.
None so brilliant, pure and fast,
Pleasingdaughters, mothers, wives;
'Tis well known that in the past
Ye have added to our lives
Comfort, wealth and great incre.lse,
Constant streams of joy and peace.
The theme of Mr. Moody's remarks
was taken from Exodus xxv., 1, 2:
"And the Lord spoke unto Moses, say-
ing, speak unto the children of Israel
that they bring Me an offering; of
every man thin. giveth it willingly with
his heart, ye shall take My offering."
"Although gold and silver were the
first grifts that Moses was thus in-
structed to receive," said the preacher,
"still he was told that other offerings
of lesser value, down to camel's hair,
would be just as acceptable, provided
that they were the best that the don-
ors could afford to contribute. Let it
man give cheerfully of his substance to
the Lord's cause. If he has gold and
silver, all very well,
BUT TIIE WIDOW'S MITE
and the boy's gift of a few goat's hairs,
if need be. will be thought
just as much of inthe king-
dom of heaven. I do not want
a man, because he is wealthy, to go to
work and build a church of his own.
I have known of churches thus erected
and have seen the deadest imaginable
congregations inside them. Let your
giving be rather that of a bootblack, of
whom I once heard. The little fellow
was seen by his companions one morn-
ing industriously blackening his own
shoes. They asked him why he was
doing this and he replied, 'Oh, I am
going to Exeter to see what they did
with the penny I gave then for the
missions last summer. We might
well, brothers and sisters, take a simi-
lar interest in our own giving. What
we want is more heart, and if we en-
gage in whatever work we do with a
right notion, God will accept the ser-
vice, no matter how small it may be.
It is your weakness that God wants,
but people when they are called upon
to perform some service or engage in
some work, almost invariably make ex-
cuses on this score. Moses, when he
was sent for by the Lord to lead the
children of Israel, acted thus. Ho was,
he said, not endowed with any special
gifts and was slow of speech. He was,
however, enjoined by the Lord, that
withthe rod, which ne carried in his
hand, he would lead the Israelites forth
from out of theireaptivity. Supposing
that Moses in goingon his way had met
one of
OUR MODERN FREETHINKERS.
