ALLAN LINE When elected to this position a year ago I said I feared I should he able to give but limited at- tention to the duties of the office. It has been as I antici- pated and, while 1 ave tried to do all I could in the interests of 'our Union, I have regretted my inability to respond to some of the invitations to visit so- cieties within the County during the past year. As you will have observed, however, our worthy Secretary has been idefatigahle in his labors, and has succeeded in presenting to you very satisfactory statistics, the gathering of which has entailed no small amount of correspondence. While all the Exe- cutive have assisted to their utmost, the heaviest part of the work has ne- cessarily fallen to him, also, in the preparation of, what I think I can honestly call, a splendid programme. There are just two thoughts which press upon me and which I wish to share with you to -day. The first is the importance ofemphas- ising the clen.ominational aspect of this move- ment. We need constantly to remind ourselves that our motto "For Christ and the church" implies loyalty to our denomination, and not simply to our local church. There is danger of our thinking that, by assembling in splen- did conventions, by helping to swell their tide of enthusiasm, we are doing our whole duty to "the Church." Rather we need to remind ourselves that we but meet for fellowship, after months of separate effort in our various churches, and for inspiration with which to return to those individual fields of work. In our loyalty to Chris. Endeavour we should not forget its essential characteristics, a mistake a certain mystical idea of christian unity for "the church." The church in con- crete forru for each of us is found in the particular denomination with which we are connected. RORAL MAIL STEAMSHIPS. If there is a flower in the world OW want's that flower." You cannot by cultiva- tion 1ualie the mignonette into a geran- ium... A mignonette it will remain, but it will fill the air with its fragrance. The modest, retiring person will never loose, that characteristic, but she may carry so much of her sweet -'spirit into the Soctety, that it shall become one of its strongest attractions, though one of themost silent. Thegreatdanger to -day is that we shall spend our en( rgy upon conventions instead of getting it there and expending it upon our individual work. No amount of organization can supplant the individual. The world is not to be saved by machinery. A wind shakes down a lot of apples, but those band picked will keep longer. Person- al effort both on and off the committee is needed. The circle of our personal influence overlaps somebody else's, giving us a splendid chance to reach him, and marking out our duty, within the small- est circle lie wonderful possibilities. None present occupies a smaller circle, perhaps, than the unknown woman who dropped a tract in the way of the ungodly Richard Baxtor. But see the waves of influence started by that little piece of paper as it fell into the sea of his life. Out of his renewed and consecrated head and heart came "The call to the Unconverted", tllat brought a multitude to God, including Philip Dodridge. Philip Dodridge wrote "The rise and Progress of Religion" which brought - tens of thous- ands into the kingdon of God, and among them the great Wilberforce. Wilberforce besides accomplishing the liberation of the British slave, thereby snaking the Union Jack for ever the emblem of liberty, worte "A Practical View of Christianity," which struck the fetters from almost as many souls, and among them Leigh Richmond. He in his turn wrote, "The Dairy- man's Daughter" which has been the means of salvation of uncounted hosts. What a wave of influence started by a poor unknown woman, and yet who is there that can't do more than that? What we need is the consecration of our individual wills to our in- dividual work. Infinity is behind such a will and we , can say, "I 'can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth ate." THE CELEBRATED Ideal Washer aril Wringers. THE BEST INTHE EMARKETS. I wish to emphasize the spirit which needs to characterize every member of them ; for it is when the individual- ity of the workers is preserved that a committee can do its best work. One of the unique things about our Socie- ties is the way they provide work for the different members. We have the Prayer Meeting Committee calling for the ripest in Christain experi- ence and bringing the most frilly informed judgment to the selec- tion of leaders ; the Look -out Committee . affording ample field for tb.e judicious use of wise counsel, sympathetic attention, and personal magnetism, to help the inexperienced, to lift the fallen, and to win the in- different; the Social and Literary Committees with their fields of opera- tion for the special lovers of music and literature, leading out the latest talents of every member, and by extending the field of his knowledge and practical operation, broadening hips life ; the Sick and Poor Committee, where the most Christlike can seek to reproduce the life of their Divine Master is lifting from the hearts and hands of his tried ones, the burden*. too heavy for mortals to bear ; the S. S. Com.' like so many multiplications of the over-worked superintendents self, ever thinking and watching and work- ing to fulfil the most essential part of the Divine injunction "Feed my Lambs." The Flower Committee, for those living so near to nature's heart, that by proper selections from her flora, they may breathe over the great con- gregation the sweet spirit of rest from over weening anxiety, and worldly care, enabling the Pastor like Jesus on the mountain to bring a flower to his pulpit and discourse from a lily, as his text, and then • Carrying them as so many rays of embalmed sunshine into sick rooins, or hospital wards, bearing on their wings of peace the wonderful words of life. By carrying this spirit into all these departments of work, we shall achieve the greatest results both for ourselves and for our societies. Hereiri we shall discover our own best selves. Only by giving our lives do we keep them. This it is that in the political, scientific, literary and eccles- iastical worlds, men have .risen to he "lights and landmarks on the cliffs of fame." The liberties of a nation are written in the blood of a Lin- coln the educational fabric of a nation rests on a Ryerson ; the tele- scopic infinities and Copernican Sys- tem revolve around the name of Gali- leo as from behind the prison bars he exclains "It moves." " It moves," the religious life of a nation burdens a Knox till he exclaims, "give me Scot- land. or I die ;" • Protestantism is im- personated in a Luther on his way to the htomish Diet, as he declares "if there were as many devils in worms as there are tiles on the roofs of their houses in the name of God 1 would go ;" the sin of a world crushed the soul of the Son of God, so that He gave himself for us that he might i-e- deeln ns from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people zealous of good works. Only by so giving our lives that we shall loose thein in efforts for others, con we attain unto the full- ness of life ourselves, and only as our individual lives are thus given in work in our societies can they become really potential for good. In such consecrat- ed individuality lies the secret of a successful society. A piece of machin- ery in a factory may he complete in itself, but there it stands doing noth- ing; adjust the belt to the drive wheel which connects it with the motor power behind it and instantly every part of the machine is put into motion. Adjust the belt of prayer and conse- cration and we shall no longer be pow- erless, but every part of this organiza- tion, instinct with life our societies shall become regular Saint factories meeting the long felt needs of their several communities. WekV omen and all mothers who are nursing babies derive great benefit from Scott's Emulsion. This prepara, tion serves two purposes. It gives vital strength to mothers and also enriches their milk and thus makes their babies thrive. Scot 's Emulsion is a constructive food that pro- motes the making of healthy tissue and bone. It is a wonder- ful remedy for Emaciation, General Debility, Throat and Lung Complaints, Coughs, Colds, Anaemia, Scrofula and Wasting Diseases of Children. SendforPampI:Ie on Scott's Emulsion. Fret. Scotts: Bowne, Belleville. All Dru99ists. hoc. & $1, The trustees of the United Society, so I was informed by one of them a a few days ago, wondering whereunto this great movement will grow and feeling that they have no legislative power over it, are increasingly anxious that the different denominations shall assume complete control of their res- pective societies, and that the so- cieties shall consider then sel- ves entirely as a part and parcel of the machinery of their respective deno- minations. 7o illustrate my meaning they desire that the different Peresb'y Societies in any Presbytery, or Synod, when called to a conven- tion for denominational purposes, shall respond, feeling that it is really C. E. work, to assist in the missionary, or other work in which their church is engaged. In others words, they really desire that your eyes shall he quite as much or more to your denomina- tional authorities as to them. Herein lies the only safe -guard of C. E. and to fail here is to be false to the first and essential principles of this great movement. The best worker for his own church, while retaining a spirit of loving fellowship with those of all other churches, is the best C. Endeavor. The other thought is the personal consecration of individuality to the perforamance of that work in our res- peetive Societies and churches. Some- body has said "nature broke her mould after she made Shakespeare" but that is also true of every one arils. Endless variety is the universal law in both nature and gra,e. Philosophers tell us that there never grew two blades of grass or two loaves, or fell to snow flakes, which actually resembled each other ; and the Scriptures tell us that we have "each received gifts differing accord- ing to the grace given unto us." Only by the perfection of each part was the Creator able to say of the' world :—"It is Very good," and only by the perfect performance of each ones part in our Societies can there be harmonious unity produced. Our whole being needs to be put into the work with whatever distinctive characteristic we may have.
