A good method of casting a bull, in or- der to get at his foot for trimming or other purposes, is given by Hr. Clement Stevenson of Newcastle -on -Tyne, Eng- land, the successful breeder of Polled Angus cattle, in The Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England. A similar plan hue been ns,:d by Ayrshire breeders near Montreal, having been in- troduced by Dr. McEuchron, The throw- ing is done quickly, easily and safely. The acompanyiug cut shows how the ropes are adjusted: The plan is as follows: Put n halter on. Take a sound ordinary cart rope; make a loop at one end and pass it over the head and let it rest close around the neck, low down like a collar; bring the rope to the near side, pass it over to back part behind the shoulders, bring it un- derneath the chest, and pass it under and then above the rope ao as to make a 1pop around the chest; carry the rope back, pass it over the loins, and bring it under- neath the belly, close to the flanks; make another loop ae- beforc, aud carry the rope straight behind the animal; tighten up the loops, one close to the elbows, the other close to the hind flanks. All being ready, iustruct the man who holds the halter shank to pull forward, and, at the same time, tho men 5ho have hold of the loose end of the rope to pull straight backward, and down the animal goes, generally without a struggle. Keep his head down and the rope firm, and, as a rule, the animal lies quietly until such a time, as It is desired that he should get up, when the rope is slackened and upng. he gets' none the worse for the The heaviest bull may be cast in this way; but, of course, no one should think of casting cows in calf, either in this way or any other. Those who have experi- enced trouble in the past in trimming their bulls' feet will greatly appreciate. this novel method of casting for that purpose. TOWN REFUSE AS FUEL. Result of Experiments 1VIth the Liret Furnace int Hilllfnx, Experiments in "seeking to utilize the refuse of towns as fuel have been carried so far that a plant, known as the Livet plant, has been set up in Halifax, Eng- land, with which it js intended to supply electric energy. . The successful working of the Livet'furnace, says The Popular Science Monthly, appears' to depend upon the peculiar construction of its flues, which are so built as to utilize the effect of the decreasing volume of the gases of combustion traveling towards the chim- ney, so promoting a Iiigh velocity to the air passing through the furnace bars end producing rapid combustion with intense heat. At the same time, the effect of this peculiarity of construction is to cause the gases themselves to move slow- ly through the flues, so that they may part with their useful heat before escap- ing into the atmosphere. The force of draught at the furnace is such that a high and constant temperature is ob- tained and efficiency of combustion in- sured, while all unpleasant odors inherent iu town garbage are destroyed. As an example of the heat economy effected, it ° is said that wherea.e in previous gener- ators the best results ever obtained have been three quarters of a pound of water evaporated on the combustion of one pound of refuse, in the Livot generator over three pounds of water are evapor- ated into steam for every pound of refuse eousumed, iu spite of the fact that it is frequently known to contain 20 per cent. of moisture. The temperature of the gases just'Slefore entering the chimney is stated to be from 800 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit lower than hitherto obtained. The progression of the ghees is partially arrested at both ends of each flue for the purpose of permitting them to deposit the contained light dust iu suitable expansion chambers or pits which can be cleaned out when desirable. This arrangement serves to overcome the Objectionable dust which in ordinary "destructors" tends to choke the flues and impregnate the air of of the surrounding districts. Fresh, Clean Water for Pont try. The ordinary V-shaped trough B,shown below, made from ordinary fence boards, shows a simple method of eupplying the poultry regularly with pure water. It may be made of any desired length, but 18 in. is sufficent. In this at one end in- vert a five -gallon can or jug A, which has been previously filled with water. To keep it erect, drive two 'stakes at abies ought to be fat. Give the Thin Babies a chance.
