He enters the roots a little hastily.
She (indifferently): Ab, Mr. Revere,
is that you? I did not hear you come

"Yes, MISS Heartwell."
"Do come and look at these beautiful
flowers Colonel White has sent me. He
is such an adorable old gentleman, is he
not? I for oue rather prefer au aged

captivating, and," laughing, "they make
such ideal lovers. What exquisite taste

"Too gaudy for refined taste, I ven-

"I shall venture still farther and say
I think it is outrageous for that old man

She fumes.
He takes three turns around the room,
then takes from his coat a bunch of vio-

See, Miss Hartwell, what charming

Prehistoric Relics.
A discovery of great scientific interest
has been made in excavation being car
tied on in the district of '1'latiaco, State
of Oaxaca, A number of small images
formed in metal were uncovered by the
workmen in one of the oldest tyiins a few
days ago. The images represent people
of Oriental appearance and dress, as well
115 priests in their robes of sacrifice.
They bear hieroglyphics of unknown char-
acters, and are elaborately wrought with
fine art lines shown in every curve. '1'lte
images found thus far are of gold, either
wholly or in part, and are coated with
some unknown enamel, which has Pre-
served them from all harm in the many
years they have been buried in the soil.
They will proj?ably be shippers to the
Nationa Museum in the City of Mexico,
where they will be placed at the disposal
of the scientific world for further study
and discnesion. The find is the most lin-
portant of the year in the main of anti-
quities, and preparations are now being
made to conduct a complete exploration
of the Tlaxiaco ruins for further evidence
of the ancient civilization which is known
to have flourished in Southern Mexico.—

A Dog's Fidelity,
A pathetic story of the affection of
a dog ploy hie master comes from Cook -
ham. On Sunday afternoon an ex -con-
stable was walking along the riverside
when he heard a splash some hundred
yarde off. On his way to the spot he was
met by a French poodle, which, betray-
ing great excitement, ran before him
harking loudly. After directing the po-
liceman a considerable distance, the
animal suddenly sprang into the water
and swam to the spot whence the alarm
had first come Finding nothing, the dog
then made, his way to an overturned
boat, which no one could induce him to
leave, and upon a search being made and
the river dragged, the body of Dr.
Charles Percy Lovell of Portchester-
square was discovered by the assistant
lock -keeper at Cookham, entangled in a
plass of weeds. Not till then could the
faithful poodle be persuaded to quit the
spot where his master .had lost itis life
by the capsizing of the boat. As Dr.
Lovell was an expert oarsman and a good
swimmer it web siirmised at the inquest
that he must have mot with his fatal mis-
hap while seeking shelter from the rain
beneath the bridge, the weeds preventing
him from reaching the bank.—London
