There was an unknown man found
dead at Grand Bend Friday week by
Messrs. Stebus and Polloc:k,lving on the
step of one of the old buildings at what
was known as Morris Mell on the road
leading to Thedfurd. He was fairly
well dressed and about 35 years old,
and only one arm. His remains were
taken care of by the authorities of
Thedford.

morning the coroner's jury reached a
verdict, and Mrs. Maria Hartley and
Louis henry Ling are now in Brant-
ford jail to await their trial for the
wilful murder of Caleb Hartley, hus-
band of the female prisoner. '

The Winnipeg printers have resolv-
ed that all news compositors in regular
employment should work only five days
in the week, and give the sixth to less

Tent in Ottawa with 45 charter mem-
bers, and after completing the work
the members surprised him by making
him a present of a beautifully -chased
gold -headed cane suitably. inscribed.
The cane is of solid ebony, and will be
very highly prized by Mr. Hail. The
new Tent was named Capital Tent, as
there was a large number of members
obtained out of the House.

sort of so-called oak. As long as it is
not dilapidated and worn -looking it
nittkes no difference how cheap it is.
Titers should be a couple of straight,
backed chairs and a comfortable rocker.
A big, pretty rug or Afghan which will
protect her from taking cold if she lies
down for a few nriuutes in the afternoon
will twin the average girl's heart cuut-
pletely.

Speaking of duck (tats, says Httrper's
Bazar, recalls some perfect duck gowns
nude for a fatuous yachtswoman. Toe
shops are filled with so•cailed duck suits,
costing from a few dollars upwards,
some with little linen 111 them, others
very fine, pointille or brocaded with. t ilk,
all cut after oue plain, with a jacket and
skirt to -wear with a vest or shirt -waist.
Of course tailors delight iu making these
jackets and coats,its such garments are
their specialty ; yet at Redfern's one sees,
the simplest gowns of white linen duck,
not unlike line glossy sheeting, marked
$75, and made with a plain belted waist
matt a round skirt trimmed with the
genuine navy-blue dungaree worn by
the British navy. They are without lin.
lug, and are cool to the touch in the sus
triest hour. The linen waist slopes in a
V from the shoulders to be gathered front
and back to a wide belt of blue dungaree
striped with white braid. The V space
, is filled iu with a shield of the blue twill-
ed cotton. striped with cross rows of
white braid, and there is a broad sailor
collar of the deep blue bordered with rows
of white braid. Tee sleeves, all in one
piece, of. white linen, is very wide at
the top, and stitched below the elbows
iu lengtuwise tucks to make it fit
closely in a blue dungaree ouff trim-
med with rows of white linen braid.
The skirt, neatly four yards wide, is
gathered to white silk belting, and is
trimmed at the foot with a four -inch
baud of the,dark dungaree with three or
four rows of dark blue braid abovelit.

and educate their taste for cigars, but to

enable an agitation to be started with a
view of obtaining a decrease in the tax
