IN returning from the Conference at
Goderich last week the editor of the
Free Press stopped over a few hours
at Clinton and enjoyed the hospitality
of Mayor Holmes, of the New Era, and
his family. Clinton is a town of much
beauty ; is favored with several import-
ant manufacturing industries,—pro-
rninent among which is the Doherty
Organ Works—and has more hiisiness
vim and enterprise among its mercan-
tile eetablishnients than is generally
manifest in towns of its proportirins.
The town has fine streets, thousands of
beautiful shade trees, a conrnodious
park, good Public School and Colleg-
iate Institute, and numerous churches.
Mayor Holmes is constantly on the
alert to advance the interests of his
town and it cannot be said of him that
he is an occupant of the position of
chief magistrate with the object alone
of enjoying the dignity and honor of
the office.—Acton Free Press.
A LETTER OF THANKS.—TO MR. AND
MRS. PIKE, CLINTON,—DEAR FRIENDS,
—Please accept my sincere thanks in
behalf of Mrs. Peter Bart and family,
for your kindness during the time of
her husband's suffering,while at your
home, at Clinton. Wen I consider
the noble qualities of heart, uncon-
sciously revealed by yourself and wife,
during his illness, your untiring efforts
to alleviate the pain attending the long
hours of suffering, your kind words of
encouragement offered to those who
are dear to him, followed by your
words of sympathy ; when I attempt
toy thank you, in her behalf, words fail
me, and I am powerless to express the
depth of her gratitude. I also wish to
thank the good nurse, Miss Stevenson,
for the kind and gentle manner in
which she attended to his wants dur-
ing the long hours of pain ; her good
qualities have won her many true
friends ; also Dr. Gunn for his kindness
in doing all in his power to alleviate
the painof a loving husband; also to his
fellow -workmen, and others who con-
tributed their services whenever re-
quired. In conclusion, I can only offer
you, individually and collectively, the
heartfelt thanks of his wife and family.

RUNAwAY.—Through a defective tug
Mr. D. Cook's delivery horse ran away
on Monday, upsetting the wagon ano
spilling a barrel of sugar on the street.
Otherwise there was no serious
damage.
SNEAK TIIIEvING.—Last Sunday
evening some one entered the house of
Mr. Ernest Herworth and carried off
$14 in wish. Mr. Herworth had been
absent but a short time. There is very
strong suspicion as to the guilty party.
DEATH.—Alice, eldest daughter of
Mr. Janes Howson, passed to her
reward on the 16th inst., aged 43 years
and 6 months. For 26 years she had
lived with Mrs. Thos. Rance. A
couple of years ago Miss Howson con-
tracted a severe cold which terminated
in consumption. The funeral took
place on Monday to Clinton cemetery.
FAST TIME.—The great relay bicycle
race from Sarnia to Montreal was com-
pleted four hours ahead of schedule
time, averaging over sixteen Miles an
hour. Tiie transprovincial and inter-
provincial relay ride of bicyclists
began at Sarnia at four o'clock on the
morning of Friday June 15th ; it ter -
urinated in Dominion square, at Mon-

Saturday, June 16th. The distance of
551 1-2" utiles of road was covered by
110 relays of swift bicycle riders in 33
hours, 26 minutes 38 seconds.
A. 0. F. SERMON.—Last Sunday Rev.
Mr. Fairlie preached a very appropriate
and able sermon to the local
Ancient Order of Foresters. There
were probably ninety members pre-
sent. He took for his text "Am
I my br'other's keeper?" The rev.
gentleman demonstrated plainly
that the Order was the keeper of the
brethren and that the A. 0. F. excelled
throughout the world. The whole
sermon was eulogistic of the Order and
one of the best society sermons ever
delivered. At,the hall the usual
thanks were tedered. The Foresters,
home and visiting, were delighted with
the whole proceedings.
