nig. When . tiles are pieced its the
ground they have an average depth of
four feet, while the open or covered
ditch may be put two or three feet
deep. The tile drain carries off the
wetter underneath iu this planner. caus-
ing the surplus to gq down as deep as
the tile is laid, thus perutittiug the roots
to follow also in search of food. Whorl
the soil is full of nater it is h a cold
condition, and all that portion not flow-
ing from tete surface or draining into
ditches eimis dawn slowly. The the
drain carries off the lower water so
rapidly that the drainage of the upper
portion becomes a matter of hours in-
stead of days. As the water below the soil
passes down into the arida they the air
and warmth enters, the soil being made
%vernier, and more friable in texture,
permitting of bung plowed earlier, and
gives greater capacity to the roots of
the plants fordiasolviug the plant food
in the soil.
DRAINED SOIL AFFORDS MOISTURE.
Uudtuiued soil may app:ueitiy be dry
and Triable neer the surface, oven below
the depth of the plow, but the subsoil
may be cold, wet and clammy. \Vllen
the route of plants reucll the subsoil the
cold eecouptered and the slow chemical
reaction of the uncaps offer no iudu•:e-
mieut to the roots to seek nourishment,
bat when this cold weather is carried
down and the soil is warmed and be-
comes friable there is such an increase
in depth of root, with greater expense,
us to permit the plants to secure mois-
ture duriug seasons of drought, as the
routs are able to gu to whatever depth
the tile may be placed. A compacted
soil will cause the water to flow off on
the eurface, but the under•draiued soil,
'having become friable, has greater cupa-
city of absorption, and retains moisture
by reasun of the finer division of its
particles. Drought supplies some plants
by cutting off tie food supply, there net
being sufficient moisture to render the
substances soluble, i.ut when the soil is
umderdraiued to the depth of .four or five
feet there is not only more moisture 10
the lower soil, but from four W ten
times the amount of roots to supply the
plants.
EXCESSIVE MOISTURE.
Although by drainage the soil is ren-
dered more retentive of moisture during
drought, the excess during periods of
saturation (as was the 'case a few days
ago) is carried offtllhore completely than
by ditching, and with less liability of
Iosa of plant food, as well as avoiding
unsightly and inconvenient ditches. As
the rains pass down they carry nitric
and carbonic acids, 'which are solvents
of the soils, as well as ammonia. These
substanbes are arrested and absorbed by
the soil, and perform valuable service iu
the preparations of plant food. Drain-
age la a safeguard against wet soils and
an excess of moisture, thereforo,• and
keeps the soil warm and facilitates ger-
mination and growth. The cost of tile
drainage is no greater than ditching and
keepiug the open drains clean and iu
repair, while the gain in earliness of
time of planting, greater ease in prepar-
ing the soil, and protection against
droughts and freshets cannot well be
estimated.
WHILE THE CORN SPROUTS.
Crops in Young Orchards -Strawberry
Beds -Form Notes,
A young orchard may be cultivated
for nue or two years;or until it has made
too much growth and acquired large
roots. Potatoes or cabbages are excellent
as they requires, clean cultivation, and
the enanure used in the rows, will also
benefit the trees. If the growth of the
trees is too rapid, however, the orchard
may be used for grass for one or two
years, and then cultivated again. Pear
trees that grow too rapidly are more li-
able to blight than those that are of
slower growth.
The new stravr berry beds will last
for five or six years if the cultivation
during the first year is thorough. The
difficulty with the tnatted, rows is that
in the second or third Ir years grass and
weeds take possession. To avoid this
the young plants should be worked
frequently in order to kill every weed or
blade of grass that appears, and after the
rows are tilled with runners the weeds
must be pulled out by baud.
Arsenate of lead has been found to be
a special poison for the teat caterpillar.
It does not injure filo foliage of trees.
A pound of the arsenate in 150 gallons
of water also destroyed potato beetles.
A convenient mode of preparing the so-
lution is to add 11 ounces of acetate of
lead and four ounces of arsenate of soda
to 150 gallons of water for spraying trees
or vines. The substances aro poisons,
and should be handled as carefully as
Paris green.
Dr. Henry Leffman, who has given
milk and butter his attention, and who
has conducted many valuable experi-
mente with them In the laboratory,
gives the following as a teat for distin-
guishing butter from imitations : A
apoonl ul or two is placed in a narrow
cup and quickly heated to the boiling
point. It it is true butter it will boil_.
quietly and foam up in a mass of fine
bubbles, often overflowing the cup. If
it is buttering or oleomargarine the sam-
ple, when heated, will foam up but lit-
tle and sputter as it boils. The test is
regarded as infallible for detecting spu-
rious butter.
Moisture in the soil can be retained.
When a soaking rain has given a liberal
supply of moisture cultivate the ground
by simply loosening the top soil. This
will prevent too much evaporation of
moisture and supply the planta for a
longer tune. When the top soil is hard
and baked the warmth of the sun and
air le kept out and the evaporation of
water occurs more rapidly. A loose soil
also secures more water during ebowers
by permitting it to soak in instead of
running off, as is the case when the sur-
face of the ground is hard.
Quality is in demand for fruit at the
present time. The highest prices aro only

nig. When . tiles are pieced its the
ground they have an average depth of
four feet, while the open or covered
ditch may be put two or three feet
deep. The tile drain carries off the
wetter underneath iu this planner. caus-
ing the surplus to gq down as deep as
the tile is laid, thus perutittiug the roots
to follow also in search of food. Whorl
the soil is full of nater it is h a cold
condition, and all that portion not flow-
ing from tete surface or draining into
ditches eimis dawn slowly. The the
drain carries off the lower water so
rapidly that the drainage of the upper
portion becomes a matter of hours in-
stead of days. As the water below the soil
passes down into the arida they the air
and warmth enters, the soil being made
%vernier, and more friable in texture,
permitting of bung plowed earlier, and
gives greater capacity to the roots of
the plants fordiasolviug the plant food
in the soil.
DRAINED SOIL AFFORDS MOISTURE.
Uudtuiued soil may app:ueitiy be dry
and Triable neer the surface, oven below
the depth of the plow, but the subsoil
may be cold, wet and clammy. \Vllen
the route of plants reucll the subsoil the
cold eecouptered and the slow chemical
reaction of the uncaps offer no iudu•:e-
mieut to the roots to seek nourishment,
bat when this cold weather is carried
down and the soil is warmed and be-
comes friable there is such an increase
in depth of root, with greater expense,
us to permit the plants to secure mois-
ture duriug seasons of drought, as the
routs are able to gu to whatever depth
the tile may be placed. A compacted
soil will cause the water to flow off on
the eurface, but the under•draiued soil,
'having become friable, has greater cupa-
city of absorption, and retains moisture
by reasun of the finer division of its
particles. Drought supplies some plants
by cutting off tie food supply, there net
being sufficient moisture to render the
substances soluble, i.ut when the soil is
umderdraiued to the depth of .four or five
feet there is not only more moisture 10
the lower soil, but from four W ten
times the amount of roots to supply the
plants.
EXCESSIVE MOISTURE.
Although by drainage the soil is ren-
dered more retentive of moisture during
drought, the excess during periods of
saturation (as was the 'case a few days
ago) is carried offtllhore completely than
by ditching, and with less liability of
Iosa of plant food, as well as avoiding
unsightly and inconvenient ditches. As
the rains pass down they carry nitric
and carbonic acids, 'which are solvents
of the soils, as well as ammonia. These
substanbes are arrested and absorbed by
the soil, and perform valuable service iu
the preparations of plant food. Drain-
age la a safeguard against wet soils and
an excess of moisture, thereforo,• and
keeps the soil warm and facilitates ger-
mination and growth. The cost of tile
drainage is no greater than ditching and
keepiug the open drains clean and iu
repair, while the gain in earliness of
time of planting, greater ease in prepar-
ing the soil, and protection against
droughts and freshets cannot well be
estimated.
WHILE THE CORN SPROUTS.
Crops in Young Orchards -Strawberry
Beds -Form Notes,
A young orchard may be cultivated
for nue or two years;or until it has made
too much growth and acquired large
roots. Potatoes or cabbages are excellent
as they requires, clean cultivation, and
the enanure used in the rows, will also
benefit the trees. If the growth of the
trees is too rapid, however, the orchard
may be used for grass for one or two
years, and then cultivated again. Pear
trees that grow too rapidly are more li-
able to blight than those that are of
slower growth.
The new stravr berry beds will last
for five or six years if the cultivation
during the first year is thorough. The
difficulty with the tnatted, rows is that
in the second or third Ir years grass and
weeds take possession. To avoid this
the young plants should be worked
frequently in order to kill every weed or
blade of grass that appears, and after the
rows are tilled with runners the weeds
must be pulled out by baud.
Arsenate of lead has been found to be
a special poison for the teat caterpillar.
It does not injure filo foliage of trees.
A pound of the arsenate in 150 gallons
of water also destroyed potato beetles.
A convenient mode of preparing the so-
lution is to add 11 ounces of acetate of
lead and four ounces of arsenate of soda
to 150 gallons of water for spraying trees
or vines. The substances aro poisons,
and should be handled as carefully as
Paris green.
Dr. Henry Leffman, who has given
milk and butter his attention, and who
has conducted many valuable experi-
mente with them In the laboratory,
gives the following as a teat for distin-
guishing butter from imitations : A
apoonl ul or two is placed in a narrow
cup and quickly heated to the boiling
point. It it is true butter it will boil_.
quietly and foam up in a mass of fine
bubbles, often overflowing the cup. If
it is buttering or oleomargarine the sam-
ple, when heated, will foam up but lit-
tle and sputter as it boils. The test is
regarded as infallible for detecting spu-
rious butter.
Moisture in the soil can be retained.
When a soaking rain has given a liberal
supply of moisture cultivate the ground
by simply loosening the top soil. This
will prevent too much evaporation of
moisture and supply the planta for a
longer tune. When the top soil is hard
and baked the warmth of the sun and
air le kept out and the evaporation of
water occurs more rapidly. A loose soil
also secures more water during ebowers
by permitting it to soak in instead of
running off, as is the case when the sur-
face of the ground is hard.
Quality is in demand for fruit at the
