The Calf With a Cough.
•
' When I ride through the side lines,
And hear a stray calf
In the orchard or paddock
Give a horrid laugh,
I jnst whip up my horses,
• And haste to be off
Out of range of the tumult
• Of that wretched cough.
You see, tuberculosis
Broke out at the farm,
And I, never dreaming that
There was any harm
In a shnple disorder
No worse than a cold,
Never took any action,
And some calves were sold.
Just what was the'matter, I'm
Unable to say •
But the farmers have kicked hard
Since that awkward day,
And go where I may I meet
Their cold sneer and scoff,
At the man who unloaded
The calves with a cough.
So when out on the side lines
I hear a chuff roar,
I just get up and skip mit•—
Don't wait to hear more.
For I know that calf's bawling
Is not for more oats,
But it means that the farmers
Won't give me their votes.
—Hon. John Dryden.
Oh, we sigh to taste some coffee like
our mothers used to make,
And we yearn to get a slice of bread
like that they used to bake ;
But it may be we're ungrateful, yet
we're sure we do not care
To feel once more a slipper like our
mothers used to wear.

Small -pox is still the scare at Chicago,
and though a semi -quarantine is en-

being well spread. Canada has decided
to enforce quarantine against that
country, and elects that -passengers on
trains may be vaccinated and baggage
disinfected whenever occasion seems to
demand. Chicago has appropriated
$100,000 to try to get rid of the disease.

The Guelph Herald says :—The Von.
Archdeacon showed in The Herald
office the other day a very remarkable
document, and of great interest, that
had lately come into his possession.
It is a commission issued; by John
Montgomery, president of the Grand
Eagle Chapter of Upper. Canada, on
patriot executive duty, dated Windsor,
Sept, 26, 1830. The commission itself
is an appointment to the division on
patriot service in Upper Canada, and is
signed by D. S. Hand, commander-in-
chief of the North-western army on
patriot service in Upper Canada. It is
countersigned "Liberty or death."
There is a very striking illlustration,
intended no doubt to terrify the Cana-
dian. The Yankee eagle, which re-
sembles a dissipated turkey buzzard, is
soaring aloft with a firm grip of the
British, Lion by the ear. The B. L.
does not seem to enjoy his aerial flight,
but he hangs on to the Crown with one
of his forepaws. It is very probable
"The Grand Eagle Chapter on Patriot
Service" . was te gang of scallywags
that fell into the hands of Colonel
Prince, who "ordered them to be shot,
and they were shot accordingly."

The "army of peace" -calve to an in-
glorious end at Washington on Toes-,
day. The army formed in procession;
with Mrs. Coxey, the unfortunate babe
know as "Legal Tender ;" Mrs. Digger
the Kansas Populist orator ; "Mamie
Coxey as "Peace" and Coxey's bull -
pup as star attractions, and march-
ed to the capitol. A large crowd
•had assembled. Coxey attempted
to snake a speech hut was immed-
iately arrested ; so were also Christo-
pher Columbus Jones and Carl Browne.
Coxey and Browne were afterward
bailed out. The army camped in the
negro quarter, and mulcted visitors ina
fee of 25 cents for the privilege of en-
tering and hearing their speeches.
Coxey proposes to emulate a much
greater general and "fight it out on that
line if it takes all summer." He pre. -
poses to stay at Washington and com-
pel Congress to pass his hills. The
success of the army in getting free ra-
tions on conditions that "move on"
evidently encourages its leader to think
he can get legislation in the same way.

Our Dog.
-In our home of the past winter we
have had a shaggy little dog, worth his
weight in silver, as an insurance against
thieves and burglars. A member of
the family I -nay make any kind of noise
or disturbance in the night and our
little dog keeps silent, but let a strang-
er touch a window or a door at any
time of the night and instantlyhe gives
an alarm. He is a little felow, but
beggars and pedlel's are glad to get out
of the door yard when he goes for
them. Some of his experiences with
then, have been most amusing. Some-
times lie has things thrown at him,
but he never gets hit. The door bell
hardly ever rings without his being at
the door within one minute, no matter
in what part of the house he may be,
and he welcomes every visitor and
seems as delighted to see them as any
member of the family. Several pages
of this paper' might he filled with
stories of his intelligence. Some clays
ago he took from our wife's work
basket a cake of wax, for which we
called him to account. The next time
he came to our rooms we said to our
good wife, "There's the thief that stole
your wax." With tail between his legs
he left as suddenly as though he had
been threatened with a shot gun. If he
does not understand a great deal that
we say his actions in many cases can-
not he accounted for. From Our
Dumb Animals.
