Now that acme enterprising genius has proporfed to prose into cervica the wale power of the Boephorue for lurk - lag file Turkish capital it might not be amiss to call to miud,at lbsyl oqe or two al several niers modest'schefnea to w*va, power utilization that have actually been carried into effect, and that have prac- tioatly demonstrated wave motors to possess elements of decided value and usefulness. One of these schemes, as materialized at one of the summer resorts along the New Jersey coast, consisted in the use of a thick wooded blade, strongly built, abtut five feet wide and eight feet lung, which was hung from pivots at its upper corners, between two piles of the dock, and was free to be swung to and fro by the waves. Projecting from the upper edge was a rod ep contlected as to operate a pump which raised water to a tank to which it was delivered to carts for street sprinkling. The contrivance, it will be understood, depended for its action upon the pro- gressive action of the waves, winch swung the pivoted blade. Crude as this apparatus was, it appeared to give quite satisfactory results, and led to the use, a short tints later, of a second mo- tor of the lathe general class, though es- sentially different in manner of opera= tion, depending, as it did, upon the rise and fall of a' float acted upon by the waves, and upou the to and fro motion of a hinged vane. A timber frame was pivoted at one end between the piles of a dock, and at the other end carried a float, which, of course, was free to rise and fall with the waves. A wire rope extending from the float passed over two sheaves and carried a weight at its other end. At- tached to this rope was a second one, which passed over still another sheave to'the plunger of a pump, the water from which was delivered to an over- head tank: The float weighed about 2500 pounds and the counterweight 2000 pounds. As the float rose on a wave the counter- weight descended and lifted the pump plunger, which performed the return stroke by its own weight, the counter- weight being lifted by the falling float. Allowance could be made for the rise and fall of the tide by changing the length of the rope leading from the counterweight to the pump plunger, and provision was also made for lifting the float entirely out of the water when the waves wer running unusually high. The pump used had a 6 -inch bore and a 0•foot stroke, and ordinarily filled the 12,000 gallon tank in about seven hours.— Cassier's Magazine. Believing that "a good wife is of the Lord," Martin Luther chose a good woman, Catherine de Bora. a lady of noble birth, a nun, and, if we may credit Holbien's portrait, 'a very pretty woman. Better still, she was a faith- ful and affectionate wife, though het' temper was not the sweetest, and her tongue at times could scold. Luther loved her clearly. With him, indeed, reverence for woman was .at. once a natural instinct and a point of doctrine. He observed that when the first woman was brought to the first man to receive her name, he called her not wife but mother—"Eve the mother of all living," a word, be says, "more eloquent than ever fell from the lips of Demosthenes." - (2) SHIL0II'S CURE is sold on a guaran- tee. HAVING SUFFERED over two years with constipation, and the doctors not having helped me, I concluded to try Burdock Blood Bitters, and before I used one bottle I was cured. I can also recommend it for sick headache. ETHEL D. HAINES, Lakeview, Ont. Mr. James Crawford, of London, was talking over old times with another Crimean veteran who visited him a few days ago, and one of the events of the campaign witnessed by. Mr. Crawford earned for the hero of it the Victoria Cross. Four guns were stationed in a roughly constructed fortification'out- side of Sebastopol, and Mr. Craw ford was one of the artillery men who occupied the position. Suddenly a large shell from a Russian battery fell just inside the line, and every man but one follow- ed the general practice on such occas- ions and threw himself as flat on the ground as possible. But the nearest man to the shell happened to be Dave Hamilton—a fine soldier, too. He jumped for the shell like a flash, and, although the burning fuse was only a fraction of an inch long, Hamilton managed to throw it outside the wall, where it exploded before it fell to the ground. The gallant act probably saved half a dozen men from being killed or maimed for life. No small objection which young folks had to the old-time spring -medi- cines was their nauseousness. In our day, this objection is removed and Ayer's Sarsaparilla, the most powerful and popular of blood -purifiers, is as pleasant to the palate as a cordial. Reasons Why It Is Not au Enduring Sentiment. Love between women and men was not invented for the entertainment of philosophers, but largely for domestic purposes; and if platonic love is to have anything better than a hazardous and unstable existence, the conditions of it must be such that it may prosper with- out conflict with nature's inure impor- tant ends. 'thus we see why platonic friendships between young people who might marry do not endure, , Such couples get married, and their friend- ship merges into a more durable senti- ment, or else one of them marries some one else and then it lapses. At least it should (apse; for if it does not, it not only militates against peace in a family, but it tends to keep the unmarried platonist from going about his business and finding himself a mate, accord- ing to nature's des gn. It is true that there are women, and young women at that, who can contrive for a time to maintain a husband and one or two simultaneous platonic intimates. But in such cases one of three things hap- pens : Either the wife makes Iter hus- biind happy and her platonic admit..es nnserable,or she makes her friends happy and her husband miserable,or she makes them all miserable. If by any chance or miracle of talent she seems to make them all hapby, she makes society miser- able, because it cannot see how site does it. And when society is miserable it talks ; until finally it breaks up the ar- rangement. Site is bound to fail, and the reason does not lie in any defect in her, but in the fact that her purpose is contrary to the economy of nature, which has provided barely men enough to go around, and does not permit a wo- man who has a man of her own to moilopulize other men with impunity. Every marriageable man besides her husband that any yeoman absorbs iir- volves +aro waste of some other woman's oppoh.°ulities, and nature abhors waste with a proverbial antipathy.—February Scribner. An old farmer in Waldo county had a choice lot of cows, and a neighbor, see- ing the herd in the pasturage, asked for how much he could have his pick of one. "Twenty-five dollars," said the owner. "All right, I'll be around to- morrow and Bt iect one." The next day the owner of the cows told his hired man to drive the only poor cow in time lot to the barn, which was done. Soon time buyer put in an appearance to buy a cow. He missed one, however, and was suspicious. "How Is this ? You said I could have my pick of the lot. Where is that other cow?" "Oh, that cow you don't want," said the owner, "She is old and no good, so I placed her iu the barn. You don't want her," But the buyer insisted on having that cow. He sus- pected she was the best one of the lot. "All right, then," said the seller. "Drive that cow out, John," The cow was driven out by the hired mall, and the buyer would not look at the rest, but purchased her at once and drove her home. A day or two afterward be came back, and accused the seller of cheating him, and wanted him to take the cow back. But the old fellow re- fused, saying that the buyer had his pick and crust abide by it, --Lewiston Jour- nal. Well -Paid Work. When people speak of authorship as an underpaid profession, they reckon without their Mrs. Humphrey Ward. For the American and English markets alone she was paid for "David Grieve" $80,000. Say that she gets $80,000 more for "Marcella," and that she got $40,000 for "Robert Elsmere." That is $200,000 for three books written during a period of about six years. Two hundred thou- sand dollars in six years is not bad pay, when one considers that it is all profit. The success of an author depends upon the demand of his work.
