the growers of Apples especially, to
harmoniously co-operate in the effort
to.Avert the dangers which so seriously
threaten to.restrict, if not destroy this
important; brane.)i of our export trade,
The Association clfa
doll bas for its main object
the placing; before growers the mules
of those- varieties of Apples that have
been found, by practical experience, to
be best suited for the expert trade; to
point out where greater care
and attention to the quality of
our productions, and the market's
requirements, •will prove of immense
benefit 'to all; to eradicate many
of those evils which have crept
into the • trade through ignorance on
the part of some, and intention on the
part of others, and which are bringing
Canadian fruit into disrepute hi the
consuming markets; and in general, to
place the business on a more satisfac-
tory basis than has hitherto prevailed.
It is absolutely necessary to improve
the quality of our fruit if we are to
hold our own in the foreign markets.
The prevalent idea that European
countries are unable to roduce.ood
winter apples is a mistaken one, they
are producing, and in rapidly increas-
ing. quantities, fruit -that is'as good as
many of our best winter varieties, and
far superior in every respect to such
kinds as the Phcenix, Pewakee, Tal -
man Sweet and others. This is notably
the case in Denmark, Belguiin, Hol-
land, and parts of Germany and
France. Growers .. in these countries
are now becoming as much alive to
the importance of this branch of their
export trade as we are. Heretofore
they have not marketed their apples in
as good shape comparatively as Carr-
adians-this will be obviated in the
future, as a number of large Continent-
al handlers of fruit visited the British
markets last autumn, for the purpose
of finding out the bestkind of package,
and the proper mode of packing the
fruit to suit the demand. For some
years past they have, been planting
and grafting, especially in Denmark,
only those kinds cit fruit which compare
favorably with our best varieties, such
as the Northern Spv, Greening, Seek,
Baldwin, Golden Russett, etc. We
cannot ignore these facts if we desire
to hold our own in the foreign markets.
It is necessary to use much greater'
care in the planting of an apple orchard
than in the planting of anything else.
A mistake made in planting an inferior
variety of wheat, corn, or any other
kind of produce, may be rectified the
following season, hat this is not the
case in setting out an apple orchard,
and it behooves those intending to
plant apples to exercise the greatest
care possible. The Association strong-
ly recommends the planting out and
grafting only of those varieties which
are in themselves intrinsically superior
in quality; and meet with the market's
requirements, having due regard to the
locality and to the soil. The following
kinds are 'shown to be excellerit in
quality, and by thorough test have
proved their superiority its good ship-
pers :-Sunanter-Duchess of Oldenburg,
Alexander. Early Fall-Gravensteins,
Maiden Mash, Cayuga, Red Streak.
Late Fall -Blenheim, Ribston, Twenty-
Ounce,
wentyOunce, and Cranberry Pippins, King,
Huhb:trclstbn, Fallawater, Snow Apple
or Fameuse. Winter -Northern Spy,
Spitzenburg, Greening, Baldwin, Gold-
en and Roxbury Russet, Seek and
Jonathan.
The Association would further recom-
mend the re -grafting of all -Tallman.
Sweets, Phoenix, Pewakee, Swaar,
Jennettings, etc., with the Northern
Spy, Golden Russet, or any of those
varieties which are recommended to begrown. The association further recom-
mends that growers give more atten-
tion and care to their apple orchards.
From the appearance of the majority
of the orchards throughout the country
one would suppose the growers im-
agined they had done their duty when
they have planted the trees, and
that nature is expected to 'do the rest.
After planting the right varieties a
thorough system of cultivation, and a
proper pruning of the trees is as essen-
tial to the production of good- fruit as
a thorough system of cultivation and
care is necessary in growing anything
else. A more intelligent care of the
fruit after it is grown is also necessary.
Many growers and handlers of Apples
wonder why their fruit does not keep
after it has -been stored in suitable
winter, quarters, never thinking that it
had been left on the ground for one or
even two weeks exposed to all kinds of
weather, The antiquated idea of pick-
ing the fruit and dumping it into piles
on the ground to "sweat," is in keep-
ing with the same idea that when a
man is ill he must be bled ; in • the one
ease, the man is losing his strell 'tl1
through -the loss of blood, in,tlir other
the apple is losing its best keeping pro-
perties by being exposed to sun, dew,
rain and rapid changes of temperature.
A well ventilated building should be
used to protect the fruit and barrels
from the soil and weather till the time
for marketing or winter storing has
arrived. If suitable buildings are not
convenient, one might be erected at a
small expense, and would amply repay
for its cost in a very short time.
It pas been thought best in the in-
terest of all, that growers should supply
their own barrels, as owing to the
limited time that coopers have in
ordinary seasons of getting barrels
ready, material is sometimes very
difficult to obtain, and necessitates
their using unsuitable stuff and making
up a very inferior package, thereby
seriously damaging the fruit while in
transit. It has been decided that here-
after growers shall furnish the barrels,
which shall be first class andof govern-
ment standard size.
It is hoped that all interested will
give this circular letter publicity, it be-
ing reported that nurserymen are tak-
ing large orders for those varieties
which are most inferior in quality, and
therefore unsuitable for planting.
