On Jordan's Hank.
"Jordanis oras praevia vox ecce Baptista) gnatit."
On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry
Announces that the Lord is nigh :
Come, then, and hearken ; for he brings
Glad tidings lion) the King of kings.
E'en now the air, the sea, the land,
Feel that their Maker is at hand ;
The very elements rejoice,
And welcome Him with cheerful voice.
Then cl ansed he every Christian
breast,
And furnished for so great a Guest !
Yea, let us each our hearts prepare
For Christ to come and enter there.
For Thou art our salvation, Lord—
Our refuge and our great reward ;
Without Thy grace our souls must
fade,
And wither like a flower decayed,
Stretch forth Thy hand to heal our
sore,
And make us rise to fall no more ;
Once more upon Thy people shine,
And fill the world with love divine.
To Him, who left the throne of heaven
To save mankind, all praise he given !
Like praise be to the Father done,
And Holy Spirit—Three in One.

THE TERRIBLE SAD DEATH OF A YOUNG
FARMER NEAR 1VIARTON, ONT.
On Sunday of last week a very sad
occurrence took place on the farm of
Mrs. Thomas Aikens, of the fifteenth
side road, near Chesley Lake. Mr.
Thomas Aikens, an estimable young
man, and the only support of a widow-
ed mother, had hitched up a span of
spirited horses to drive his mother and
sisters to the forenoon service in
the Presbyterian church at Skipness.
While they were getting into the
sleigh he went to the horses' heads to
keep them quiet, but they took fright
and ran into the orchard, he all the
while hanging on by the hits. They
ran up against an apple tree in the
orchard, where the tongue of the sleigh
pinned him between its point and the
apple tree and crushed in his breast,
killing him instantly. His sister was
holding the lines and his last directions
to her were to drop them and try and
save herself.
BABIES' AND APSE.

An infant was crowing loudly and
lustily somewhere at the back of the
house. The sounds wore inurueulate to
outsiders ; but Dr. Robinson, no buoy's
father, if lie heard them, would doubt-
less be able to interpret theta as the in-
teresting remains of the Sitnidb tongue.
For Dr. Louis RoLfnbon, whenever due-
iqg the lust two or three years he found
a leisure hour in his busy life, has studied
the ape in the babe. It was in order to
obtain some detailed information on Luis
subj,-ct from the author of -aim nasal
iu the Nursery" that our representative
had called un Dr. Robinson at Lewis-
ham:
-The article is intensely interesting,"
I said to the doctor, "but there is not
enough of int. We all want to know More
about your experiments with the young
apes. What are the actual discoveries
your experiments led to?"
"Simply chi', that every new born
child, unless it is sickly or otherwise im-
perfectly developed, has a most wonder-
ful power in the flexor muscles of the
forearm, and will support tate whole
weight of its body, durlug the first few
hours after birth, for a period vary
from ten seconds to two minutes and a
half. Now, everybody knows that in
monkeys the power of grip is very felly
developed; quadrunlaita can do any-
thing with their hands and arcus, and in
cases of danger this power is a chief
means of selt•preservatiou, 1 have new
experimented un 150 babies ; some of
them au hour or two, some a few days
old—•aud in two cases only have they
failed to hang by their hands, even the
tiniest supporting the weight of its body
for ten seconds, most of them much
longer, and iii a few clues they have
clung to a linger or a stick for two min-
utes and a halt. And even in the two
cases failure was due to other causes than
the infant's luck of muscular strength.
I ought to say that I never attempted to
experiment on weak children, who
might be injured by the exposure. A
blanket was placed below the child, so
that when it dropped it dropped on a
soft, warm surface. Whenever it was
possible the experiment was made and
the photograph taken in the presence of
the mother.
"On the face of one, aged sixty Min-
utes, sat stoic indifforenctb ; two more
looked energetic. though placid, as they
stuck with their round little fists to a
branch at the endof which appeared two
hands, looking very gigantic in com-
parison to the very youthful performers.
Some others were evidently expressing
their feelings in the Simian tougue, fur
their mouths—tremendous sized mouths
they seemed—Were wide open. The
miniature legs, absurdly small in pro-
portion to the arms, were drawn up; the
:gibes looked indeed like tailless infant
apes.
"Observe the big toe," Dr. Robinson
went on. "I have noticed over and over
again that in the case of young infants
it is turned outward, like a thumb, as in
the case of tronkeys, wilose hind feet are
an additional pair of hands. And when-
ever I have held a finger or a stick close
to the infant's feet while it at as haugiug
by its arias there has been an attempt at
clutching the stick with the feet. This
seems to me another instance of the sur-
vival of the ape's instincts in the human
child.
"Another curious fact that struck me
was that even when a child had been
hanging by its hands for over a minute—
this seems a short period, but just try to
hang to a horizontal bar, supporting the
w,•igltof your body by your iinndsouty,
for a minute or two—it let go more be-
cause it wanted to change its position
than because it was tired. Sometimes I
gave it my finger to clutch us soon as it
dropped on tit blanket, and I could feel
by we energetic grip that the little ani-
mal was by no means exhausted."—Cor.
Pall !loll Gazette.
MOTHERS WILL FIND TILE PAIN-
KILLER invaluable in the nursery, and
it should always be kept near at hand
in case of accident. For pain in the
breast take a little Pain -Killer in
sweetened milk and water, bathing the
breasts in it clear at the same time.
If the milk passages are clogged, from
cold, or other causes, bathing in the
Pain -Killer will give irmuediate relief.

The case of George Woodruff, a pro-
minent farmer, near Mulberry, Ind.,
is attracting great attention among
medical men. Mr. Woodruff is the
victim of a peculiar ailment, and the
last seven weeks he has not slept an
aggregate of one hour, He has no
desire for sleep, and appears to have
suffered no inconvenience from his
long wakefulness, except weakness.
• He has a good appetite, and his food
digests easily. His case baffles the
science of physicians, and opiates have
nn effect.
The chief of police of Chatham has
issued orders that the delivery of
Detroit Sunday papers in that town
must he stopped.
Much of life's misery is due to in-
digestion ; for who can he happy with
a pain in his stomach ? As a correc-
tive and strengthener of the alimentary
organs, Ayer's Pills are invaluable,
their use being always attended with
marked benefit.

A Plucky Schoolma'am.
The easy and comfortable attitude as-
sumed by most men riding in street
cars have frequently been a source of ir-
ritation to women: and recently one
feminine passenger had the courage to
publicly condemn the practice. A Six-
teenth street car was scudding uptown
with many masculine passengers and
one woman, who sat in an upper corner,
and whose physiognomy stamped her
as a schoolula'am. Another woman en-
tered the car at Poplar street, and, find•
ing no vacant seat, was proceeding to
grasp a strap, when the voice of the
schoolma'au1 piped out; "If these men
would put there legs together there
would be plenty of room) A dead si-
lence was folloewed by a stealthy shifting
of nether limbs, until sufficient red
cushion was visible to accomodate the
standing passenger.—Philadelphia Re-
cord.
