While counting the ballots in the
uppet flat of the town hall at Cassel -
man, Ont., a crowd, eager to learn the
result of the municipal elections, as-
sembled in the polling.room, overload-
ing the floor, which fell without
warning, precipitating about forty
men . to the floor below, a distance of
about twelve feet. The stove in the
lower room was broken, setting fire to
the building, which was fortunately
'extinguished before it gained much
headway. All the men escaped with-
out broken bones, although_ quite a
;lumber were badly bruised and shaken
up. The ballot papers were lost,
which will necessitate another election.
The dead body of Nellie Fay. 24
years old, was found in a pool of blood
in the front room of her suite to the
Hotel ' Everton, Boston, Thursday
afternoon and in the opinion of the
medical examiner death resulted from
a blow on the head, neither accidental
nor self-inflicted. From appearances
the woman had been dead, about twelve
hours. When found the woman was
dressed, in her night clothes. The bed
clothing was partially thrown back
and the sheets were stained with
blood. The body lay on the floor part-
ly under the bed' and the things about
the room gave evidence of a struggle
that had evidently taken place between
the victim and her slayer.

NORTH OXFORD.
A SOMEWHAT . DISMAL OUTLOOK FOR
THE ATTORNEY -GENERAL.
The executive of the Oxford county
Prohibition association hold a meeting
in Woodstock last week, Rev. J. S.
Ross m the chair. Among the most
important recommendations which the
executive will bring before the general
meeting of the association will be :
Frst, that the organization be made a
permanent one for the purpose of keep-
ing alive the question of prohibition;
second, that candidates he secured to
contest the next provincial elections in
North and South Oxford, who will con-
sent to !.place the question of prohibi-
hon before that of party consideration;
third, that an inlruediate endeavor be
Made to have both the Dominion and
provincial parliaments pass declara-
tions in favor of prohibition of the
liquor traffic. Sir Oliver Mowat will
lie asked to give it pledge that he will
pass a prohibition act next session. If
he declines it is quite probable that the
prohibitionists will put a. candidate in
the field.
The Liberals will meet on Saturday,
Jan. 27th, to nominate a candidate for
the legislature, and local wire -pullers
are eyeing the temperance leaders
closely. With the strong prohibition
sentiment, the uprising in North Ox-
ford against non-resident representa-
tives is likely to prove disastrous to the
attorney -general.
Ring It Out!
TILE GREATEST WATER POWER IN
AMERICA COMPLETED.
BRING TIIE BRAINY MEN.
The near completion of thecou cult
Water Power Canal induces tl'mking
men to enquire "What are we going
to do about it i'" and it is no mere figure
of speech to say all thoughts of the
future prosperity of the town are
either brightened or shaded according
to the faith of the individual regarding
this huge undertaking, to create which
the credit of the town has been strain-
ed to the utmost limit, and every other
interest has been made a secondary
consideration. But the great scheme
is almost finished, and a few -days
hence will see Lake Superior harnessed
as the servitor of Sault Ste. Marie.
The possession of such a vast creation
of power ought to be spread far and
wide over the Continent of America
and every city, town and hamlet told
that the people of Sault, Ste. Marie
have constructed one of the finest
water -powers in the world, and that it
is capable of being increased at will up
to 70,000 horse -power per second.
Perhaps one of the best, certainly
the most, direct method for imparting
the information, will be to call agathet'-
ing of the brains and money of this
Continent at the Sault, by inviting
representative men of both Govern-
ments, the presidents and Managers of
the Canadian Pacific, the Grand Trunk,
and the other great railways, together
with the leading manufacturers, grain
and pulpwood dealers, lumbermen, and
all to whole cheap and gigantic power
is a potent factor of success. Bring
these thinkers, capitalists, and manu-
factur'ers to the Sault and show them
what a grand agent we have built for
the creation of the cheapest power in
the world in almost unlimited capac-
ity.
Let them see our grand old river -
that unrivalled highway of interna-
tional commerce and wealth—show
then] the three immense ship canals
here, and the important geographical
the commercial centre of which Sault
Ste. Marie is the key; let them come
and see the vast store of Ophir gold,
Sudbury Nickle, and Algoma pine,
and learn that, with such a magnificent
heritage—not half developed—and the
important situation which the Sault
holds on the greatest highway of the
world, that investment of capital in
this great water -power -canal cannot
fail of being advantageous and remun-
erative, and that, all who assist in
utilizing this enormous power are
assured of success above all ordinary
enterprise, inasmuch that every step
of the development of the great West-
ern Prairies must assuredly also affect
beneficially the locatees in the central
point of manufacturers at the Sault.
Ile -Sault is in it., for ever, as one of the
greatest agents, most economical
power, and at the most central points
of union where the industry and com-
merce of the Great Republic and of
this Dominion can never he divorced
or divided. Ring it out that the Two
Sault's are in it for ever, and that
which the Almighty Creator united
has been developed and brought ready
to play its part in tltculevelopement of
the vast products on this little known
section of the country, and the success
prosperity and happiness of the two
greatest and best nations under
heaven.
Bring these people to the Sault,
entertain them, and teach them that
we are not Indians, and. that we are
possessed of site and power whose
influences must go rolling down the
ages as one of the greatest factors of
modern days, in which steam is placed
at a discount and the manufacturer of
the subtle element of the universe--
electricty—becomes easy as running
water down a hill. Bring men of brain
and wealth here and show them the
glorious heritage of Algoma bi general
and of Sault Ste. Marie in particular,
and then the utilization of oar great
water -power canal will have been half
accomplished.—Algoma Pioneer.

Frenzied Father's Grief
HIS LITTLE SON IS KILLED AT A GRADE
CROSSING AND HE SEIZES THE SEVER-
ED HEAD,KISSINO AND HUGGING 1T.
Willie Lieniar,S years old, a son of
Benno Liemar, a hat manufacturer, of
Orange, N. J., was killed recently at
the Globe -street crossing of the Dela-
ware, Leckawe.nna & Western Rail-
road. He ran under the gates and had
just reached.•the outbound track,' when
the train thundered down upon ilial.
His little body was thrown in the air
and Minded on the track in front of the
engine. The wheels cut him to pieces.
The father ht a -d of the accident and
ran to the spot: He reached it before
the men had completed their ghastly
task of picking up the pieces of the
body. As he pushed through the
crowd which had gathered he saw the
head of his child on the ground.
Stooping, he picked it up and kissed it.
Then hugging the head in his arms he
ran about crying and moan ng. Friends
restrained him after a time, but it was
thought he would become demented.
The blood-stained head was gently
taken from him and conveyed with the
rest of the body to the morgue,
