policy of the ruler, who, iu a few w.o,'ks,

sary of his birth, is not a whim of the
moment.
It is in accordance with a resolution
taken in his younger days, when he was
supposed to t.e in sympathy with every-
thing "wild" in the Gorman capital. It
was brought abYtt , it is said. by the sui-
cide of a pt'omtiins yowl;; lieutenant in
the regiment to which the Prineo wits
attached and of whom he was exceed-
ingly fund, While playing one nielht in
the Union club, the "Styellest" organjz t -
tion in Germany, be staked his fortune,
lost it, and left the green table to sent a
bullet through his brain in a secluded
• spot in tho'1'hiergerien, His bo ly, clad
in the uui:ornh of the "Cask", regiment
of the capital, was found the following
morning by workmen on the way to
their duties.
His Royal Highness was much affected
by the news and made a vow that,
should he live to ascend the einem, he
tyuulil preclutie such tragedies if possi-
ble. Be adopted ttie policy long before
the unhappy death of his father, how-
ever.
A short time after the suicide of his
friend he became commander of the
liusser Regiment of the Garde de Corps
as heir to the IIolenzollerns. Among,
the orders with which he surprised his
subalterns one meriting was That direct-
ing thein to give up gambling in the
Union club or resign from its member-
ship lists.
.The officials of the chub ft It the effects
of t he order immediately. The officers
of the guard in German regiments are
necessarily wealthy meu, and when they
ceased to play for higli stakes life at the
club became comparatively monotonous.
A meeting of the members was held and
a committee was appointed to call upuu
old Emperor 'William to endeavor to in-
duce Ihihn to persuade his grandson to
withdraw the °buuxioua order. His
Majesty promised to do so, sent for
Prince William, and asks,1 hint to re•
seiud the command. The Prince re-
nr,timed steadfast. Tho old Emperor
insisted.
" Allow me to ask your Majesty,"
finally broke out the Prince, "it I aux
still Colonel of this regiment'"
As a matter of course," came the
answer.
"Teen Iaskyour Majesty T Iia t to allow mo
to uphold my order," he replied, "or
otherwise I hand back the cornnhaud into
your hands at once.,'
The old hero, pleased with the spirit of
the young soldier, patted hien on the
shoulder and continued :
"That is impossible. I could not get
so good a Culonel agaiu. The order
shall remain."
Emperor William sent for the com-
mittee an hour later said said : "Gentle-
men, 1 ata sorry. I have tried, but the
Colonel will not withdraw the order."
That closed the incident and the
Union club ceased to number the guard
officers of the Prince's regiment among
its members.
The determination showed at that
time -he was then only about 26 years
old -Ile continues to shots, and never

sion to his abhorrence of ganlbhug. If
possible the will stop it in the army. Ile
sets 0 good example in Dever playing
fur high stakes. While on a hunting
expedition a few weeks ago he sat at
the table an entire evening, and found
:it the end of the game that no had won
six pfennings, or a little more thein a
cent. German fathers and mothers
give the Emperor unstinted praise for
his policy, and pray that he inay be suc-
cessful in its execution. It is a pchov
which meets the approval ever-ook'• the
Socialists. Nothing that lie has under-
taken, in fact, has gained hien more

Money -Making in America.
Very few men nowadays make large
sums of money, unless they have money
to begin with and after the representa-
tive Inas, or even the superior man, has
answered the bread-and-butter question
he is commonly at the bottom of his
purpose, ItIoney•nraking is not a high
talent, but it is a very rare one, even iu
this thriv fig democracy, supposed to be
chiefly populated by money -Bakers, in-
stead of by mere workers for bread and
butter, which we on the spot know to bo
the case. Atnerieaus of pure strain are
indubitably more capatde of snaking
money than the people of any other ea -
tion, because they are more intelligent,
more level. ped, more practical, are bet-
ter educated, am: require more conveni-
ences and redundancies. But all
their capacity is, as a rule, needed
to insure thein what they consider a
comfortable livelihood, though Euro.
peens would think it luxurious, as indeed
it is. If these could'turn their labor to
any such profit, they would put by a
considerable part of it regularly-, and so
furnish the ground -work of a compe
tency. Ansel icons, however, are not
often so thrifty, or so provident of tlio
future, because, perhaps, they are too
confident of inner resources and of ample
oppu11(111 ties.
A common saying in the republic is,
"Anybody can get a living," but it is
disproved by the patent fact tliat a great
many of us do not get a living, and aro
not able to, Iry as we may. What a
very large proportionof us are always

The Harem to Modern Turkey.
"Iiareln," in the modern acceptation
of •tlio word, merely- means the private
apartments, and these would bo called
by the same name even in a bachelor's
establishment inhabited s$loly by men,
but generally it is applied to every place
intended for women. The end of the
Turkish railway carriage, curtain° d otf
from the rest, is harem; so is the ladies'
cabin on board ship, and 'the latticed
gallery in a mosque, In the dwelllu;:-

passing, that very few Turks nowadays
ihave more than one wife. The tradl-

Major Simfield says: "I had Dyspepsia
and Catarrh of the Stomach for many
years. To make matters worse I contract-,
ed a Constitutional Blood Diceoee. My
bones ached. Blotches on the skin Looked
horrible. I tried sixteen dootors in all.
A friend recommended Drs. Kennedy t
Korean; I began their New Method Treat-
ment and in a few weeks was a now man
with renewed life and ambition. I can-
not say too ranch for those scientific doc-
tors who have been in Detroit for four-

years. I conversed with hundreds of
patients in their offices who were being
cured for different diseases. I recommend
them as honest and reliable Physicians."
