WHAT IS A ROARER.
A roarer is a horse that has an affec-
tion of the breathing tubes or bronchi
—the air passages leading to the hinge
—by which a loud, stertorious noise is
caused as the anirnaldraws in'its breath.
This is most often due to `a wasting
or paralysis of the muscles of the lar-
fnx, by which the air passage is opened
or admission of air, and as this passage
le restricted the air i$ drawn in with an
unusual effort and a whistling or hoarse
sound. There are other modes of simi-
lar" obstruction, but, as with this, all
are due to inherited susceptibility, and
for this reason it is most desirable that
• care should he taken in the selection of
.,only healthy animals for breeders.
`There is no remedy but a surgical opera-
tion, which, of course requires the serv-
ices of a surgeon, and this is frequently
/unavailing. Some relief may be secul'-
.ted by feeding soft food, and especially
;green clover, or, better, vetches or tares,
,:and• by the use of some doses of 20
rains of nux vomica in the feed twice
thy.

Three Wonderful Buys.
A Berlin oorrespoudeut of the Lluis
ville Courier Journal says : We have
had three woudertul boys int Burlin, this
winter. Tile one best known to Ameri-
cans is J.,sef Hoffmann. 'After ha rtug
broken down his health in cotieertizui g
tlu-uugit America, ` his parents brought
Hint here to recuperate. That he is fu.ly
restored tate hosts of admirers of that
singularly winning child will be glad to
know. Now he is studying diligently
aid will, 1 hope, return to you before
many years—not a chili' wonder, but an
artist. He Intl changed much since he
left you. His caddish face has become
ntucli more thoughtful, he is taller and
wears long trousers. L tat weep I attend-
ed a private concert at which he played
some of his own conipositions. He came
out quietly and bowed to the rather
small audience before taking his seat at
the piano. He was greeted with no ap-
plause, and I i'aucied 1 discovered
a suspicion of a smile around the
corners of his mouth as heglanced calm-
ly over the heads of the assemblage that
had greeted him so coldly, with
ijis American triumphs still fresh in
his memory, but it was only a suspicion
—thea he began playing. When he
finished his sonata and rose from the
pian the audience fairly rose witlt min.
He played again an impromptu (also his
own), winch sjwwed the remarkable
talent the boy undoubtedly Inas. None
is quicker to recognize taleut clan are
these very Berhuers, but they are a
mercilessly cold audience t award a
stranger. He may appear before titans
with ever so winning a bow :and they
remain absolutely calor, until they see
what he can do. Then, if they think
hint deserving, their enthusiasm is
boundless. Another "boy wonder" is
the irauk, fair -faced little Raoul K,tut-
kowski, a Polish boy of 9 years. Hs is
court pianist to the Czar of Russia, and
his little co•tt is covered With orders and
medals. He also has a decided talent
for composition, and tvitlt such mark-
ed national characteristic as to
recall to - u8 tate early compositions
of C,topin. At the close of one
of his concerts Isere last winter all of
the women pushed and struggled to the
front 111 order to 'kiss hitu. (Did you

—Jean Gerardy. . He is lean years old,
and plays the 'cello like ft unit. Whether
or nut ne composes, I do not know, but
he Is an artist. Ile made his debut here
at one of Haus Richter's philharmonic
concerts, and charmed nae. 1 was speak-
ing to our never -to -be -forgotten 'cellist
Adolf liurtdegan, recmitly about little
Juan. "Yes," he said, "I was asked to

tired, of these child wonders, that 1
looked forward to a stupid morning, but
I was amazed. I was deliguted. 13e is

Talking Cru,:try Iilydn.
The story of the talking canary. which
a few weeks ago attracted much atten-
tion in Liverpool, has Ltruught out other
instances of an acquired power of speech
in the sauce bird. In the organ of the
Selborne Society, where the story
originally appeared, there aro some
further causes given. and probably many
more may be fortueouliug. Attention
has been directed to an account of a
talking canary at Norwood which was
published in a natural history magazine
for 1858. It began by repeating a word
whica its mi -tress had often used to it—
"Kis,sie, kissie"—and by following the
word up by an imitation of the sound of
a kiss. Its mistress had been in the
habit of kissing the bird and talking to
it as if it were a child. After a time the
bird repeated other words, until it has
now a vocabulary of phrases, one of
which consists of five words.
Again, in 1963, a talking canary was
heard and seen at a cottage near Bath.
Visitors crowded to the spot to hear and
see it. Its vocabulary coast tel of such
phrases as are generally taught to par.
rots. A case is also recorded of a speak-
ing canary having been exhibited in
Regent street about twenty years ago.
The explanation given is that the bird is
gifted with uuusual powers of imitation,
and will pick up airs freely which it is in
the habit of frequently hearing. Left to
itself, it quickly imitates the notes of
other birds, and in Germany and the
Tyrol canaries are usually placed for
this purpose beside the nightingale. In
our country they are often taught to
imitate the lark. Tho words which it
imitates may be regarded as a more
development or variant of its musical
notes.
