frequently strike the town and canvas

THE HOUSE OF REFUGE.—For seve-
ral days past Reeve McMurchie's office
has been thronged by, contractors
studying the plans and specifications
of the proposed House of Refuge. The
time for receiving tenders expires at
noon to -day. The Committee meet at
Goderich on the 4th, to open the ten-
ders—Of which there are a large num-
ber—and make a report to the County
Council, which meet on the 6th, recom-
mending the adoption of the tender
they deem most favorable. The Coun-
cil, of course,,, is not bound to the
adoption of their recommendation.
Messrs S. S. Cooper and T. McKenzie
'are .both tendering for the building;
our townspeople will be pleased if the
contract should fall to either of them.
Goon TEMPLARS.—There was a good
attendance at the regular meeting of
Clinton Star Lodge •I.O.G.T., on Friday
evening. An excellent program was
given by members of the Lodine, and
was thoroughly enjoyed. A commit-
tee was appointed to make all arrange-
ments for holding Gospel temperance
meetings each Sunday afternoon. It
is thought that much good may be
done by more closely uniting the
church and the temperance societies,
accordingly the temperance societies
hope to have the hearty co-operation
and support of all the Christian people
of the town, in carrying to success this
Gospel temperance movement. Next
regular meeting, to -night (Friday), all
members are requested to attend, es-
pecially as a photo of the Lodge is to
be taken for the Grand Trunk Souvenir.
No PROFITS.—Fruit growers have
this year done considerable grumbling
at the low prices paid for apples, and
no doubt they thought they were justi-
fied in so doing, but they may be
thankful they fared as well as they
did, for some buyers- are losing thous-
ands of dollars on their shipments to
Liverpool. Apples, for some reason,
tie rotting very :rapidly this season,
and while it is quite true that the pro-
ducer has not received much for his
fruit, shippers have great difficulty in
making profitable sales, as the markets
are all against them. A telegram
says:—"Argue as one mays there can
be no doubt that the keeping qualities
of our best winter varieties are not as
good this year as in ordinary seasons,
owing to the drought in the summer
and early fall, which prematurely rip-
ened the fruit. Consequently in many
cases the apples have not been able to
