"The Last Leaf!" Can It be trio,
We have turne,l►it, atltl 00 i'ou,
Emend of ail?
That tbe years at last have Ismer?
That's life's foliage' and its flower
Fade and fall
Was -there one who ever took
From its shelf by chance, a book •
Penned by you,
But was fast your friend for life,
With one refuge from its strife
Safe and true
Even gentle E1ia's self
Might be proud to share that shelf,
Leaf to leaf,
With a soul of kindred sort,
Who could bind strong sense and sport
In one sheaf.
From that Boston breakfast table,
Wit and wisdom, fun and fable,
Radiated
Through all English-speaking places.
When were Science and the Graces
So well mated ?
Of sweet singers the most sane,
Of keen wits the most humane,
Wide, yet clear.
Like the blue, above us, bent;
Giving sense and sentiment
Each its sphere.
With a many breadth of soul,
With a fancy quaint and droll;
Ripe and mellow.
With a virile powerbf "bit;"
Finished scholar, poet, wit,
And good fellow!
Sturdy patriot, and yet
True world's citizen ! Regret
Dims our eyes
As we turn each well -thumbed leaf;
Yet a glory 'midst our grief
Will arise.
Years your spirit could not tame,
And they will not dim your fame;
England joys
In your songs, all strength and ease.
And the "dreams" you "wrote to please
Gray-haired boys."
And of such were you not one?
Age chilled not your fire of fun.
Heart alive
Makes a boy of a gray bard,
Though his years be, "by the card,"

Where Potatoes Can't Be Boiled.
When the barometer stands at thirty
inches sea level, showing au atmospheric
pressure of fifteen pounds to the square
inch, the boiling point of water is 212 de-
grees Fahrenheit, When part of this pres-
sure is removed by ascending to higher
levels, water will boil before coming to a
heat of 212 degrees, or if a descent is made
into a level below the level of the sea the
boiling point will rise accordingly. Thus
t is plain to see that in highly elevated re-
gions, where there is less atmospheric pres-
sure upon the water, the boiling point is
much lower than at sea level—in other
words, it will boil before it is sufficiently
eated 4to cook potatoes, . beans, etc. An
levation of but 510 feet makes a diminu-
ion of one degree in the .boiling point. At
he City of Mexico, where the elevation is
,471 feet above sea level, water will boil at
98 1-2 degrees; at Quito, which is 9,541
eet, the boiling point is reached at 194 de-
rees. It will be seen, therefore, that
oiling is not always equally hot. At the
laces mentioned and in several localities
n our own country, many articles of food
cannot be cooked at all by boiling; or, if
they can, it takes several hours, where a
few minutes should suffice.—St, Louis Re-
public. .

The Earth In Miniature.
Four leading French scientists, Villard,
Cotard, Seyrig and Tissandier, have suc-
ceeded in making a wonderful model of
the earth. 1t is a huge sphere, 42 feet in
diameter, and has painted upon its outside
all the details of the earth's geography.
At Paris, where this pigmy world Is being
exhibited, an iron and glass dome has been
erected over the globe. The building is
eight -sided and is well provided with ele-
vators and stairways, which make it an
easy task for the visitor to thoroughly ex-
amine "all parts of the world." The globe
weighs 13 tons, but is so nicely balanced
that it can he easily rotated by a small
handwbeel. The entire surface area is 525
feet which is sufficient to exhibit all the
mountains, rivers, islands, cities, etc., even
to the principal thoroughfares the latter.
The Jenkins' Throe -Eyed Cat.
The Jenkins family, who resides at Lees-
ville, a village south of Massillon, are in
possession of a cat which has three distinct
eyes. The cat is near a year old and a
great pet. People visit the Jenkins home
daily out of curiosity, and the cat is the
centre of attraction. The two eyes are in
their usual places, but the addittonal one
is directly back of the cat's left ear. The
cat his perfect use of the three organs and
blinks all at once. The cat is invaluable
as a mouse catcher, for it can see before
and in the rear at the same time.—Cleve-
land Leader.
The Care of the Bair.
Do not -use such mineral oil products as
vaseline and petroleum jelly for the hair.
Only good animal oils will improve the
quality and supply the nutriment needed
to quicken hair growth. The reason for
this Is obviousi since the natural oft of the
scalp is of the animal nature.
Row to Clean Oily Bottles.
To cleanse glass bottles that have held
oil, place ashes in each bottle and immerse
in cold water, then heat the water gradual-
ly until it boils; after boiling an hour
let them remain till cold. Then wash
the bottles in soapsuds and rinse in clear
water— .— -.

THE MONTREAL WITNESS.
One of the sights of Montreal is a' visit
to the 'Witness' office, which, for internal
elegance, convenience and completeness of
equippment hasfewrivals anywhere. One's
attention is arrested on the sidewalk by
seeing through a window a Chinaman
patiently turning a crank with the air of
one who has a contract for a century of
faithful labor, and means to fulfil it. The
Chinaman is made of wood and for steady,
patient, endless toil commend us to a
wooden Chinaman. Making bold to go in
we find ourselves in an enviable public of-
fice with tiled floor, hot -house flowers and
what not. Then we were piloted up a
spiral stair, through the great editorial
room, to the battery of linotypes which are
the marvel of the nineteenth century as
Gutenberg's moveable types were of the
awakening Iife of the fifteenth. The great
Hoe press of the 'Witness,' which prints
almost any number of pages, from two to
thirty-two, is the very most complete ma •
Chine anywhere. Close beside it you ate
sbown on enquiry a patch on the floor
which marks the spot where exploded the
famous bomb some months ago, which the
'Witness' doubtless owed to its active and
effective war against gamblers and bunco
steerers, a class which by exposure and
clever caricature it has managed to drive
from the city, or at least to deprive of the
open tolerance and public freedom which
they before enjoyed' at the bands of sym
pathetic officials, The stand for law and
order taken by the 'Witness' lately resulted
in an investigation of the police and detec-
tive system of Montreal, which has reveal-
ed
the need of some revolutionary change.

lived to be grown-up women. Thirty -mile
of the sons were still living in the year

recorded in one of the old historie's of
Newcastle that "a certyne gentleman of

Sir J. Bowers adopted ten of the sons, and
that three other "landed gentlemen" took
