ON '3.` - .K THE CLINTON NEW ERA AN IMPORTANT INCIDENT AT A CPUTRY AUCTION SALE. Quite recently a country store atook wag sold off by auction in lots to suit purchasers. The sale, whioh had been largely adver- tised by circulars distributed throughout the country, drew a large crowd of sturdy farmers and their good wives; the bidding was fast and spirited, and good prices were realized for all useful and staple goods. Amongst the vast variety of articles put up for sale were tt.o lots of package dyes for household dyeing. The auctioneer an- nounced that he would first dispose of the "Diamond Dyes," goods that every farmer and farmer's wife knew well and favorably. The women, being most interested in these goods, did the bidding, and in ten minutes timesome ten groes of the Diamond Dyes were sold to anxious buyers. The other dyea were then brought for- ward; and introduced by some oriental name. Said the auctioneer: "I give you the name of these dyes, but I know little about their manufacture or qualities; Dome give me a bid, any price." There was no response—not a bid to en- courage the auctioneer's heart.i Seeing that time was being lost, and anxious to get rid of these dyes at any price, the auctioneer, in a joking way, said: "You surely. want your garden fences and barns painted; if these dyes are not good enough to color your dresses, shawls, jackets, coats, silks, and ribbons, they will surely do for com- mon wood painting." The idea was a novel one—it was a rev- elation—and seemedto meet wlth'the favor of a few, and for a small price, the entire stook designated by a high sounding name, was sold to one farmer, who was heartily laughed at. There is an important moral to be de- ducted from the results of the auction sale just referred to. The moral taught is, that poor"and worthless dyes, wherever sold, are dear at any price—even when used:for com- mon fence painting. The "Diamond Dyes" are well known, popular and always reliable; they sell everywhere and under all circumstances, and. give wonderful results in restoring to beauty and usefullness, old and faded ar- ticles of wearing apparel. "Diamond Dyes" save many dollars each year in every farmer's home. Advances made to farmers on their own notes at low rates of interest. general tanking Business transacted Inte-e allowed on deposits. tie Notes bought J. P. TISDALL, Manage Dr. H. T. A brutal outrage was prepetrated near Brockville on Monday on the per- son of a girl named Annie Canning, thirteen years nt age. The girl had been to a neighbor's house, a short distance north of the village, and was returning home _on the_ _railvlay_track when she was met by a man arid- brutally ndbrutally assaulted and outraged, un- der threats of being killed if she re- vealed who her assailant was. Under fear of the threat she at first said it was a tramp who had so abused her. When it became known so terrible a crime had been committed in broad daylight and close to the village, the greatest excitement prevailed. The village bells were rung to alarm the inhabitants, and the people turned out en masse and scoured the country in all directions in hope of capturing the perpetrator of the deed, but without avail. The girl told several conflicting stories, however. About midnight she awoke her parents, saying she could not go to sleep until she had told the truth regarding the matter. She then stated that her assailant was a young man named Mac Alford, a resident of the village; that he had threatened to kill her if she informed on him, and for that reason she told the story about the tramp. Alford is the son of a blacksmith in the village, and the fam- i1y is quite respectable. Alford was at once arrested, The girl was terribly injured. Doubts of her recovery were at one time entertained, but it is now thought she will recover. WESTERN PEOPLE SAY OF STARR'S POWDERS.
