THE JUDGE'S STORY.
LION. JOHN M. RICE TELLS How HE WAS
OU1UID OF SCIAa'IC RIIEuirATISII—ORIPPLED
Fon Sax YEARS.
The Hon. John M. Rice, of Louisa,
Lawrence county, Kentucky, has for many
years served his native county and state
in the legislature at Frankfort and Wash-
ington, and until his retirement was a
noted figure in political and judicial oiroles.
A few days ago a Kentucky Post reporter
called upon Judge Rice, who in the follow.
ing words related the history of the cermet
that led to his retirement. "It Is just
about six years since I had an attack of
rheumatism, slight at first, but soon de-
veloping into sciatic rheumatism, which
began first with acute shooting pains in
the hips, gradually extending downward to
my feet. My condition became so bad
that I eventually lost all power of my legs,
and then the liver, kidneys and bladder,
and in fact my whole system, became de-
ranged. I tried the treatment of many
physioians, but receiving no lasting benefit
from them, I went to Hot Springs, Ark. I
was not much benefited by some months
stay there, when I returned home. 101891
I went to the Silurian Springs, Wakeehaw,
Wis. I stayed there some time, but with-
out improvement. Again I returned home,
this time feeling no hopes of recovery.
The muscles of my limbs were now reduc-
ed by atrophy to mere strings. Sciatic
pains tortured me terribly, but it was the
disordered condition of my liver that was I
felt gradually wearing my life away. Doc-
tors gave me up, all kinds of remedies had
been tried without avail, and there was
nothing more -for me -to -.do -but resign my-
self to fate.
"I lingered on in this condition, sustain-
ed almost entirely by stimulants, until
April, 1893. One day I saw an advertise-
ment of Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Pale
People. This was something new and as
one more drug after so many others
could do no harm, I was prevailed upon to
try Pink Pills. The effect of the Pills was
marvelous, and I could soon eat heartily, a
thing I bad not done for years. The liver
began to perform its functions, and has
done so ever since. Without doubt the
pills saved my life, and while I do not
crave notoriety I cannot refuse to testify
to their worth."
Dr William's Pink Pills are sold by all
dealers, or will be sent poet -paid, on re-
ceipt of price (60 cents a box, or six boxes
for $2.50,) by addressing the Dr. Williams'
Medicine Company, Brockville, Ont., or

A PUZZLE—THE WONDERFUL
PROPHET.
A correspondent sends us the follow-
ing :—
There is in this town (Toronto), and
may be seen in York street, by the
curious, a most wonderful prophet,
whose generathti, it is truthfully as-
serted, was before Adam. He was
with Noah in the ark; he was with our
Saviour when crucified; he was with
Columbus when he discovered Ameri-
ca; he was with Capt. Cook on his voy-
age around the world; he followed
ItBonaparte into Russia, and was with
him at the battle of Waterloo; he was
with Nelson at the battle of the Nile;
he knows not his father, nor did he
ever suck the breast of his mother.
His clothes are neither hair, cotton,
ilk or woollen, neither wove, knit nor
spun, neither are they made with
hands, yet of the most beautiful color
—were never dyed; his beard is of a
splendid color, and is seldom cut. He
goes barefooted like a grave friar; he
cares not for the poen s or vanities of
the•world;-buthad, rather -live iu•barns
and out -houses, than dwell in the pal-
aces of princes; he never takes money
if offered to him; the most he was ever
known to receive at one time was a
single grain; he never yet lay on a bed,
nor sat in a chair. His voice is strong
and piercing, and he cries out upon the
wickedness of the world with out-
stretched arms. The Scriptures make
mention of him as no imposter, for he
constantly proclaims the day of the
Lord. He is rather inclined to Popery,
for he keeps Lent strictly. He is well
skilled in the ancient and modern
languages as regards his own. He
leaves all men alone about their reli-
gion. He believes not in the resur-
rection of the dead, yet there is not
one article of the faith he denies. He
walks boldy in the face of his enemies,
without either gun, pistol, sword or
stall, yet has such a deadly weapon of
defence, that no man has ever used.
He is strictly temperate and drinks
nothing any stronger than water, and
those that follow his example live to a
Food old age. He looks upon the Fen-
ians as a barbarous set, and he will
some day be cruelly martyred by
them. He neither wears hat, cap,
nor wig, and always takes rest stand-
ing. He is composed of flesh and
blood, always comes when called for,
but never answers when spoken to.
He never yet spoke, still preached one
sermon, which was so convincing that
a great mann was converted thereby.
He is not the wandering Jew, nor John
the Baptist; as some may think. Now,
pray who is he?

MR HARTY 5 POSITION.
Dr. Bourinot, Clerk of the House of
Commons, is a recognized authority
on all Parliamentary questions. Ask-
ed to -day about the case of Hon. Wm.
Harty, of Kingston, he paid:—"There
is under the circumstances not the
slightest impropriety in Mr Harty be-
ing retained in the Cabinet. This is
true especially in view of the protest
entered against the return of his op-
ponent, which may result in showing
that he was not legally defeated in
Kingston. But even if there was no
protest, the retention of Mr Harty in
the Cabinet would be perfectly in ac-
cord with constitutional practice and
precedent, and , is justifiable on the
score of public convenience. Of course
when the time draws near for the
meeting of the Legislature, and if Mr
Harty should be without a seat, and
not intending to try fora new con-
stituency, the question would then as-
sume another color. There is not the
slightest doubt about the matter.
When Sir John Macdonald was defeat-
ed what a great public inconvenience
it would have been if he had been
compelled to immediately resign from
the Cabinet." A case will be found
quoted in Todd, where Mr Gladstone,
though defeated, remained in the
Cabinet and attended Cabinet meet-
ing even during the session of Parlia-
mo lt.
An' so plies'rock d' oradel, Kitty Ann,
An' look out for d' baby, Kitty Ann,
Fer he's yer little brudder,
An' youse hasn't got no udder,
So ohes' youse min' n' baby, Kitty Ann.
SIXTEEN YEARS OF IT.
CHARLES Scnitvvxn HAD KIDNEY Dlsaesa ALL
THIS TIME AND DIDN'T KNOW IT—HowHIt
FOUND OUT AND How HE Wis
_CUT.
TORONTO, Oot. 1.—Sixteen years ago kid-
ney disease attacked Charles Schryver, a
bricklayer in this oity, but he did not know
it. It showed itself in pains in the small
of the back. They dad not amount to
much at first but kept getting worse.
Within the past six years, Mr Sohryver has
almost every week had to quit work for one
or two days on account of their severity.
Doctors ascribed them to the liver and
other causes and prescribed, but their med-
icine did no good, Last spring, a pity
physician diagnosed the Daae as one of dia-
betes and wanted to prescribe, but Mr
Sohryver said, "No, if its diabetes, I'll use
Dodd'e Kidney, which I know will cure
me." They did cure him, too, and to -day
Mr Schryver is free from ache or pain and
able to do his days work, week in and week
out, with any man in his trade.
HE WAS NOT A GIRAFFE.
The fair plaintiff's counsel in the
breach -of promise case thought that
he would make life a burden in the un-
fortunate young man who was the un-
willing defendant.
"Do you mean to say," he asked,
after a lot of elhbarrassing questions,
"that after you had been a bsent for an
entire month you did not kiss the
plaintiff, to whom you were engaged
to be married, when you first saw her
on your return?"
"I do," responded the defendant,
firmly.
"Will you make that statement to
the jury?"
,"Certainly if necessary."
"Do you think they would believe
you?"
"One of them would, I know."
"Ah, indeed! Why should he?"
"Because he was present when I first
maw her,. -He-was-at^the'gate wheii 1
rode up, and she stuck her head out of
the secondlstory window, and I asked
her "How d'ye do?" and I said I'd be
back to supper in half an hour. I'm
no giraffe"
And everybody in the court smiled
except the barrister.—
Mr D. E. Cameron,. Assistant Pro-
vincial Treasurer, has resigned his
position. Mr Cameron has taken a
position with the Mutual Reserve In-
surance Co. in New York city.
A Racking Cough
Cured by Ayer's Cherry Pectoral.
Mrs. P. D. HALL, 217 Genessee St.,
Lockport, N. Y., says :
"Over thirty years ago, I remember
hearing my father describe the wonder-
ful curative effects of Ayer's Cherry
Pectoral. During a recent attack of La
Grippe, which assumed the form of a
catarrh, soreness of the lungs, accom-
panied by an aggravating cough, I
used various remedies and prescriptions.
While some of these medicines partially
alleviated the coughing during the day,
none of them afforded me any relief from
that spasmodic action of the lungs which
would seize me the moment I attempted
to lie down at night. After ten or twelve
such nights, I was
Nearly in Despair,
and bad about decided to sit up all night
in my easy chair, and procure what
sleep I could in that way. It then oc-
curred to me that I had a bottle of
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. I took a
spoonful of this preparation in a little
water, and was able to lin down without
coughing. , In a few moments, I fell
asleep, and awoke in the morning
greatly refreshed and feeling much
better. I took a teaspoonful of the Pec-
toral every night for a wook, then grad-
ually decreased tho dose, and in twt'
weeks my cough was cured."
