worth sending for.
The little book minutely describes the
worts and success of one who was earnest-

cial travellers of the past or present ever
handled a- work so successfully, and few,
indeed mild be found strong enough to
resist the bribes and temptations that were
placed before the hero of the story. The

REMEDIES FOR THE PREVEN-
,.TIIOON OF SMUT.
RI -
PROF. CULTUHRAL COLLEGE, GUELPH.. PANTON, ONTARIO O
Clean If there sown, there will
sporese no smut
uponon the the grain
be no smut upon the plants that grow
from it.
Hot Water.—It has been conclusive-
ly shown that smut spores upon wheat
or oats can be destroyed by immer-
sing the grain for fifteen minutes in
water at a temperature of 132°F.
This not only destroys the smut spor-
es, but hastens the germination of the
grain and improves the general growth
of the plants. The difficulty in this
treatment, is to maintain a tempera-
ture of 132 °, for if it falls below 1300
or rises beyond 135 ° , the remedy is
likely to fail.
Any way by which this temperance
of 132°F can be kept up and the grain
immersed in it twelve or fifteen min-
utes may be adopted. Some persons
take.two vessels, one containing water
at 110 0F to 120°F, the other water at
1320F. Whatever quantity of grain
is taken each time for treatment, it
should be much less in bulk than the
water into which it is to be immersed.
The grain is put into a basleet or bag
made from loosely woven m, terial, so
as to permit the water to pass in and
out readily without the grain strain-
ing through.
The grain is first put into No. 1 a
minute or two, raised up and down a
few times so that it may be thorough-
ly wet, and heated so as not to lessen
the temperature of No. 2, into which
it is next plunged and moved about
for twelve or fifteen minutes, so as to
be thoroughly saturated. . It is very
important to keep the temperature of
the water in this vessel at 132 s ; if it
sinks below add warm .water and if it
rises above add cold water, never al-
lowing it to reach higher than 135 ° or
lower than 130 ° . The grain, after
having been raised and lowered into
No. 2 several times for twelve or fifteen
minutes, is lifted out and cooled, eith-
er by clipping it into cold water or by
pouring cold water upon it.
Considerable smut may be removed
before treating with hot water, by
placing the grain in a vessel of cold wat-
er aid stirring it about for 30 minutes.
The smutty grains will float to the top
and may be skimmed off.
Chemical Solutions.—In treatment
by using solutions of chemical com-
pounds, there is always a risk of injur-
ing, the germinating power of the
grain.
But this method has been long fol-
lowed with much success, usually more
in the case of wheat smut (bunt) than
that upon oats (loose smut.)
In both cases the hot water remedy
ranks the most successful. There aro
many solutions that have been tried,
but we shall refer to only two. It is
generally believed that a strong solu-
tion used for a short time is better
than a weak one for a longer period,
especially where the seed is to be
sown by a seed -drill. When grain is
allowed to soak for a long time, it does
not readily pass out of the drill, and
hence using a strong solution for a
shorter time is preferred.
The following are among the best
solutions that have been tried:-
1
ried:1 One Ib. Copper Sulphate (blue
vitriol) dissolved in 3 gals. water. Wet
the grain thoroughly with this solu-
tion and then dry it gradually or sprin-
kle slaked lime upon it.
2 Three lb. of Copper Sulphate dis-
solved in 5 gals. water. Wet the grain
thoroughly and ,dry by sprinkling
plaster or slaked lime upon it and mix
well. This quantity will be about
sufficient for 15 bushels of grain.
3 One lb. Copper Sulphate dissolved
in 20 gals. water. Allow the seed to
remain in this 12 to 15 hours and put
it in lime water for ten minutes and
then dry.
4 One lb. Potassium Sulphate (liver
of sulphur) dissolved in 10 gals. water.
Allow the grain to steep in this 12
hours, stirring it from time to time so
as to thoroughly mix; then spread the
grain so as to dry.
5 One lb. Potassium Sulphide dis-
solved in 20 gals. water. Steep the
grain in this 24 hours.

He had one leg thrown over the other,

waved to the great buildings as they
sprang up into life as the day grew.
The girl beside him was smiling at his
pleasantries, while the rising sun
showed how tired and pale she was,
and mocked at the paint around her

During the year 1893 compulsory pro-
ceedings were taken on 1,037 mortgages in
the Province of Ontario by the loan com-
panies making returns to the Minister of
Agriculture. This, of course, takes no ac-
count of such proceedings on the part of
private lenders. That such proceedings
have occurred in Ontario at the rate of
three per day during the year, in the busi-
ness transacted by the loan companies, is
far from satisfactory. The greatest num-
ber during any previous year was 892 in
1891.

into the skies beyond. The air in
the Chomps Elysees was heavy with a
perfume of flowers and of green plants,
and the leaves dripped damp and
cool with the dew. Hundreds of birds
sang and chattered as though they
knew the solitude was theirs
but for only one more brief hour
and that they then must give
way to the little children, and later to
crowds of idle men and women. It
seemed impossible that but a few hours
before Duclerc had filled these silent
cool woods with her voice—Duclerc,
with her shoulder -straps slipping to
her elbows, and her white powdered
arms tossing in the colored lights of
the serpentine dance. The long gaudy
lithographs on the bill -boards and the
arches of colored lamps stood out af
the silence and fresh beauty of the
hour, like the relics of some feast
which should have been cleared away
before the dawn; and the theatres
themselves looked like temples to a
heathen idol in some ,primeval wood.
And as I passed out "from under the
cool trees to the silent avenues I. felt
as though I had caught Paris napping,
and when she was off her guard, and
good and fresh and sweet, and had dis-
covered a hidden trait in her many
sided character, a moment of which
she would be ashamed an hour or two
later, as cynics are ashamed of their
secret acts of charity.—Harper's Maga-
zine for October.

fr'S A SECRET
that many women owe their beauty to Dr.
Pierce's Favorite Prescription. The reason
—beauty of form and face, as well as grace
radiate from the common centre—health.
The beet bodily condition results from good
fresh air, and exercise, coupled with
the judioioue use of the "Prescription."
In maidenhood, womanhood, and mother-
hood, it's a supporting tonic that's peon-
liarly adapted to her needs, regulating,
strengthening, and curing, the derange -
went of the sex. 1..4
If there be heacaohe, pain in the back,
bearing -down sensations, or general debil-
ity, or if there be nervous disturbances,
nervous prostration, and sleeplessness, the
"Prescription" reaches the origin of the
trouble and corrects it. It dispels aches
end pains, corrects displacements and
cures catarrhal inflammation of the lining
membranes. Once used, it is always in
favor.,

IT'S DANGEROUS GROUND
that yon stand on—with a cough or a cold,
and your blood impure. Out of just these
conditions comes Consumption.
You must do something. In the earlier
stages of Consumption, and in all the con-
ditions that lead to it, Dr Pierce's Golden
Medical Discovery is a certain remedy.
This scrofulous affection of the lungs, like
every other form of scrofula, can be cured
by it. In severe, lingering coughs, all
bronchial, throat, and lung affections, and
every disease that can bo reached through

tive that it can be guaranteed. If it does
not benefit or caro, you have your money

PARIS AT DAYBREAK.
You cannot say you have seen the
streets of Paris until you have walked
them at sunrise; every one has seen
them at night, but he must watch
them chane from night to day before
he can claim to have seen them at
their best. I walked under the arches
of the Rue de Rivoli one morning
when it was s:, dark that they looked
like the cloisters of some great mon-
astery, and it was impossible to be-
lieve that the empty length of the
Rud Cambon had but an hour before
been blocked by the blazing front of
the Olympia, and before that with
rows ofcarriagesin front of the two
Columbins. There were a few belated
cabs hugging the sidewalk, with their
drivers asleep on the boxes, and a
couple of gendarmes slouching to-
gether across the Palace de la Con-
corde made the only sound of life in
the whole city. The Seine lay as mo-
tionless as water in a bath -tub, and
the towers of Notre Dime rising out
of the mist at one end, and the round
bulk of the Trocadero bounding it at
the other, seemed to limit the river to
what one could see of its silent surface
from the bridge of the Deputies. The
Eiffel Tower, the great skeleton of
the departed exposition, disappeared
and reformed itself again as drifting
clouds of mist swept through it and
cut its great ugly length into frag-
ments hung in mid-air. As the light
grew in strength the facades of the
government buildings grew in outline,
as though one were focussing them
through an opera -glass, and the pillars
of the Madeleine took form and sub-
stance; then the whole great square
showed itself, empty and deserted.
The darkness had hidden nothing
more terrible than the clean asphalt
and the motionless statues of the cities
of France.
