Once a painter, notorious for plag-

ALBERT ST, - CLINTON.
In the past thousands have publicly de-
clared that Paine'e Celery Compound de-
livered them from the terrors and pains of
rheumatism and terrible sciatica.
The same wcrk is being done to -day on a
vastly more extended scale. Martyrs to
rheumatism are throwing aside the decep.
tive and worthless medicines that have no
merit, honesty or solid standing, and are
demanding Paine's Celery Compound from
their druggists and dealers.
They see the wonderful results that have
come from the use of Paine's Celery Com-
pound to friends, neighbors and relatives;
they also are aware of the fact, that every
cure'pnblished for the encouragement of the
sink and suffering comes from some re-
sponsible resident of Canada, who can be
interviewed or written to.
To -day we give another strong and
mighty proof of the never failing power of
Pain's Celery Compound. The lett
-
comes from Mrs Mary McKillop, of Camp-
bellford, Ont.; she says: -
"After using your Paige's Celery Com-
pound I. am of opinion that I should say
something in its favor for the benefit of all
who have not given it a trial.
"I was a sufferer from rheumatism for a
long time, and endured great pain. The
cords in the palms of my hands were drawn
up in knots, and I despaired of getting re-
lief. However, after using Paine's Celery
Compound, I have banished all my pains
and troubles, and find myself strengthed in
every way.
I think Paine's Celery Compound ie
the best medicine in the world far rheuma-
tism and all nervous complaints, and I will
always recommend it strongly. I particu-
larly recommend your medicine to all weak
and delicate women."

The Best Medicine.
A recent book narrates that a party
from the West of England was being
shown over the British Museum. In
one of the rooms the keeper pointed
out a collection of antique vases which
had recently been dug up at Hercul-
aneum. "Dug up, sir?' echoed one
of the party. "Yes, sir." "What, out
of the ground?" "Undoubtedly."
"What, just as they now are?" "Per-
haps some little pains have been taken
in cleaning them, but in all other re-
spects they were found just as you see
them." The wise man from Somer-
setshire turned to one of companions,
and with an incredulous shake of the
head, whispered: "He may say what
he likes, but he shall not persuade me
that they dugrip ready-made pots out
of the groun!"
J. 0. WILsoN, Contractor and
Builder, Sulphur Springs, Texas,
thus speaks of Ayer's Pills:
"Ayer's Pills are the best medicine I
ever tried; and, in my judgment, no
better general remedy could be devised.
I have used them in my family and
recommended them to my friends and
employes for more than twenty years.
To my certain knowledge, many cases
of the following complaints have been
.completely and
Permanently Cured
A "memorable instance of presence of
mind was the adventure of a certain
Desuglers at th'e time of a popular up-
rising in Paris, when the people took
possession of the Tuileries. The hero
of the incident eagely acted upon the
theory that a poor excuse is better than
none, and sometimes better than a
better one would be. He was an in-
quisitive person, and. regardless of
danger, he hastened to the Tuileries at
midnight to see what was going on.
At the gate he was stopped beetwo re-
volutionists of ominous appearance.
"Why do you not wear a cockade,
citizen? Where is your cockade? ' they
asked. A mob gathered about him
and demanded fiercely. "Citizen,
where is your cockade?" Desaugiers
took off his hat, turned it around and
around, looked at it on all sides, and
then said in a tone of mild surprise,
"Citizens, it is strange, very strange!
I must have left it on my night-cap.
The late Professor Hyrtl was once
in the room when Professor Langer
was conducting the examination of an
aspirant for the medical degree. Lang-
er handed the student a small bone,
saying, "Mr Candidate, here is a bone.
Don't look at it; but tell me fromfeel-
ing it what kind of a bone it is; wheth-
er it belonged to the left or right side
of the body, and whether it was part of
s man or woman." The poor student
blushed from emoar•rassment. There
was a large audience present and he saw
failure staring him in the face. He cast
a helpless glance at Hyrtl, who moved
about restlessly in his chair for a mo-
ment, and then sprang to his feet..
"And tell rue, Mr Candidate," he cried
out, the spirit of anger lighting up his
large blue eyes, "after answering the
questions of my dear colleague, the
name of the original possessor of this
bone, and where and in what street he
lived." This unexpected outburst
"saved the day" for the poor candidate,
but Professor Langer ever after declin-
ed to conduct an examination when
Hyrtl was present.
