Mr Fairhall, of Fairhall, Selkirk Co.,
Manitoba, writes for the sole purpose of
benefiting thousands in Canada who suffer
from the troubles and afflictions that made
life a misery to him in the past. Com-
ment on our part is unnecessary, as Mr
Fairhall clearly proves that Paine's Cel-
ery Compound was the direct means of
saving his life. He writes as follows:—
"Having read of some remarkable cures
reported in the Winnipeg Weekly Tribune.
permit me to add my testimony in favor of
your valuable medicine.
"I had been troubled with indigestion
and billions diarrhoea for six years.
These troubles, with hard work, brought
upon me in the spring of 1891, nervous
prostration. From a state of activity, I
wee reduced to a condition that I could not
work. My memory, which previonaly had
been retentive, failed me; I could not sleep,
and I felt a great depression of spirit, I
was so distressed at times both in body
and mind, that I often wished to die, and I
frequently prayed to God, if it be His will,
to take me.
"I thank God all this has passed away.
Paine's Celery Compound, with God's bles-
sing, has been the means of During me. I
have taken ten bottles of the Compound
which I purchased from Mr R. W. Oliver,
of Killarney
"I am now perfectly restored in mind
and memory; my appetite is good, and I
am._ n1proving.._inhealth._, For all these_
We -Sings I am more than thankful-, and
strongly recommended Paine's Celery
Compound to many of my neighbors,"

A tramp giving the name of Morrie was
given employment in May last by Mr
Philip Bowden, a farmer on the Plains
road, near Waterdown, Ont. On Sunday
night he skipped out with $240 of his em-
ployer's money. -
Emma Coleman, 24 years of age, the
good looking daughter of a citizen of Dan-
ville, I11., sold her right to her father's
estate for $1,200, went to Chicago, and is
said to have entered a restaurant on Wa-
bash avenue in an intoxicated condition,
mounted a chair and begun throwing bills
about the place. She was arrested and
had $1,105 left.
"When I was a Boy,"
Writes Postmaster J. C. WOODSON,
Forest IIill, W. Va., "I had a bron-
chial troublo of such a persistent
and stubborn character, that the
doctor pronounced it incurable with
ordinary medicines, and advised
me to try Ayer's Cherry Pectoral.
I did so, and one bottle cured me.
For the last fifteen years, I have
used this preparation with good
effect whenever I take

not considering it safe to be with-
out it."
"I have been using Ayer's Cherry
Pectoral in my family for 30 years, with
the most satisfactory results, and can
cheerfully recommend it as being espe-
cially adapted to all pulmonary com-
plaints. I have, for Many years, mado
pulmonary and other medicines especial
study, and I have come to the conclusion
that Ayer's Cherry Pectoral occupies a
position pre-eminent over other medi-

The moss deeelate territory in North
America, south of Labrador, is the, penin-
sula of Lower California. Cape San Lucas
i9 the extreme southern point, and about
ten mi19e north of this a epnr of tnontains
rune from west to east, or from the Pacific
to the Gulf of Lower California, forming,
as it were, a basin toward the cape. This
basin is mostly covered with a dense growth'
of dwarf trees, growing luxuriantly out of
the dazzling white sand. Not a particle of
surface water is to..be found anywhere in
this barlin, and, strange silt may seem, this
place hula many deer. The Mexicana living
here, when asked where the doer get water,
reply that there is none and the deer do not
require any. The east and west coasts of
Lower California abound in islands, some
of which are a few hundred yards in dieme.
ter and others miles in extent, and with few
exceptions devoid of vegetation and utterly
waterless. An American who has spent a
day, and sometimes two days, on each of
these islands, reports having found there ,
the coyote, or wild dog. The only water the
thirsty coyote,,may drink is the salt water
of the Pacific. But does ho drink it, or does
he get along without any drinking water at
all ? Or are these animals of the southwest
like the camel, which has a second etomaoh
whioh is used as a reservoir for water, and
is filled by the camel before going on long
desert journeys and drawn upon for water
when needed ? It is said that the Arabs,
knowing this, when themselves suffering
from thirst, alay their camels and oppro-
priate their water supply.

Rats are believed -to shave•been=brought to'
the Comstock towns from California in
freight wagons, probably in big " prairie
schooners," among boxesand crates of
goods. Once there, they multiplied at a pro-
digious rate, especially after they discovered
the mines. Underground there were no cats
to trouble them ; and man, who was their
enemy on the surface, was here their friend
and protector. He shared his meal with
them and they scampered about him with
perfect impunity. The warmth, too, was
very congenial to the rats, both old and
young. Cold was a thing unknown. As it
were, they had been furnished with im-
mense hot -houses in which to breed. Any
temperature they wished, from 60 to 130,
was at their service.
Rats are useful as mine scavengers. They
devour all the scraps of moat and other food
thrown upon the ground by the men, and
eat even the hardest bones. As the decay
of the smallest thing becomes unendurable
in a mine, the miners never intentionally
kill a rat.
The men have a high opinion of the rata'
sagacity. From them they often receive the
first intimation of coming danger. When a
big cave in is about to occur the rats swarm
out of the drifts and scamper about the
floors of a level at unwonted times. The
settling of the waste rock probably pinches
the rats in their dens, and causes them to
seek new and less dangerous quarters.
At times, when a mine has been shut
down for a few weeks, the rats become rav-
enously hungry. Then they do not scruple
to devour the young, old and weak of their
own kind. When work is resumed the al-
most famished creatures are astonishingly
bold. They jump upon the underground
engines, even when they are in rapid mo-
tion, and drink the oil out of the oil -cups,
quite regardless of the presence of the engi.
neers. A fire in a mine slaughters the rats
by the wholesale. Few escape, as the gases
penetrate every cranny, often so suddenly
as to asphyxiate the rats before they can
make their way out.

The elopement a la bicycle is now an es-
tablished fact instead of a cartoonist's
dream. Tho young folks who haye made
it so were Miss Gertrude Greedy, of Rock-
ville Center, L.I., and William S. Fowler,
of Brooklyn. It was through the bicycle
they met. It was on the bicycle that they
loved. On the bicycle they fled to be mar-
ried. It was not long after their first
meeting that they fell in love, but for some
reason whioh Miss Gertrude Grady could
not for the life of her understand her
mother, a well-to-do widow, and her big
brother, a plumber, did not take kindly to
her handsome young bicycler. They prefet-
red that she should favor the suit of a
young broker who was paging her attention.
But Miss Gertrude preferred the suit of the
bicycler, and she had a mind of her own.
For a week Miss Grady had been taking
bundles en her bike to Flushing, and one day
she parried a bigger bundle than usual. It
wee her wedding dress. - She was met on
the way by her cycling lover, and together
they wheeled to a minister's and were
married.
