When Heaven sends to earth below A med;eine honest, true; 'Tis meet that all the.oured should show Just what this boon can do. I thank God that in time of pain And suffering severe, I was iuformed how I might gain New life, and strength, and cheer. My shoulders pa: red eaoh day and hour, My limbs were weak and frail ; My nervous system laok'd in power, My cheeks were wan and pale. In agony I lay each day, Enough to make one weep ; While suff'ring o'er me held its sway, I could not rest or sleep. The doctors failed my case to cure; Relief I could not gain; .And nostrums, label'd safe and sure, I swallowed oft in vain. When clouds of doubt, and dread, and fear Did darkly hover round; 'Twas then I hoard those words of oheer, Paine's Celery Compound. With faith I used the Compound great, Ito virtues quick did show; Two bottles dragged me from a state Of misery and woe. Then, full of hope, I still did nee Paine's Celery Compound, Determined that I should not lose The strength that I had found. To -day, in body and in mind I am renewed quite ; I'm sure that others too will find Results that give delight. I'd say to every suff'ring soul, Use Celery Compound, And you will quickly reach the goal Where health and strength are found. CANADIAN HAY IN ENGLAND. Canadian hay is now a permanent article on the English market. The trade was opened at a time when there was an extraordinary demand for for- eign hay, owing to the failure of crops at home. and that it should be contin- ued even when the English yield is normal is highly satisfactory to Cana- da. But two things are necessary to make it a success, and to prevent fre- quent losses. The hay must be put up in such shape as to suit the English market. It must, in fact, be the very best we can produce, and shipments must be made cautiously. Hay is not an article that can be dumped on the market indiscriminately. It should be forwarded \only when, and in such quaiptities,,•,as it =is. needed; erwie'r. there will be frequent losses, for it does not pay to store the aricle in England. .Acting with a knowledge of these facts, Canadians may hope to do a pro- fitable trade in hav with England. Twenty years ago Daniel Wynkoop, of Lockpm•t, caught a turtle in Mud Creek, a little stream two miles south of that city, and after cutting his name on its back, With "1874" attached, put it back in the water. The other afteris'Son Wyiikoop tried his luck at fishing at the same creek. Of a sndden he tbonght he must have hooked a shark, but after a hard pull final- ly landed the biggest turtle he ever saw. The President of the Swiss confederation has to be content with a very modest sum, his services being valued at only $3,000 per annum. The Presidents:of the South American Re- publics are paid on a more liberal scale, the President of Chili, for instance, getting about $15,000. Minard's Liniment cures garget in oowe. Queen Victoria is bargaining with a firm of Bond street jewellersfor a pair of diamond earrings, which once upon a time belonged to Queen Marie An- toinette of France. The jewels formed part of the famous diamond necklace valued at $280,000, which had been of- fered to •Marie Antoinette, and for ob- taining which surreptitiously the Com- tessee de la Mothb; of the .High House of Valois, was branded on the shoul- ders and sentenced for life. Imperial historians say the queen was a party to the fraud. When the necklace was broken up Marie Antoinette purchased the earrings. In most villages is a sacred tree, a pi al tree, and the gods are supposed to delight to sit among its leaves and listen to the music of their rustling. The deponent takes one of these leaves in his hands and invokes the gods, who sit about him, to crush him and those dear to him, as lie crushes the leaf in his hand, if he speaks anything but the truth. He then plucks and 'crushes the leaf and says what he has to say. EXPELLED —every poi son and impurity of your blood, by Golden Medical Discovery. Then there's a clear skin and a clean system. Ad- dress, in confidence, World's Dispensary Medical Association, Buffalo, N. Y. HUMAN SACRIFICES IN RUSSIA. Vthat-Ammar,perseus are -aware that-Ammarl-Sacrifices' are still offered up in a part of Russian empire. Among the Tchuktchis such sacrifices still take place, and seem likely to be practised for a long time to come. At the same time no blame can be attached to the Russian Government or to Orth6dox Church, because all efforts to stop the practice have proved ineffectual. The sacrifices alluded to are those of old people and the sick, who, finding no longer any pleasure in life, resolve to have done with earthly and to increase the npmber of happy spirits. The Tohnktchi who has made up his mind to die, immediately notifies his neigh- bors and near relatives. Hie friends visit him and try to make him change his mind. Prayers, reproaches, complaints, have no effect on the fanatic. Seeing him thus re- solved Ihis friends go away to make the customary preparations, At the end of from ten to fifteen days they return to the hut of the Tchuktchi, with white mortuary garments and weapons, with which, in the other world, he will fight evil spirits or hunt the reindeer. After making his toi- let, the Tchuktohi withdraws into a corner of his hnt. His , nearest relative stands by his side, holding in his hand the instrument of 'sacrifice—a knife, a pike, or a rope. If the Tchuktchi has chosen the knife, two of his relatives hold him under his arms and by the wrists, and, at a given signal, the sacrificer thrust his knife into his breast. If the pike has been chosen, two of his friends hold this weapon, and two others throw the victim on its point. For stran- gulation, two of the sacrificers draw the rope tight nntil death ensues, then the breast is opened to let the blood flow out. The assistants go to the corpse, and bathe their hands and faces in the blood. The body is then placed on a sledge drawn by a reindeer and taken to the plane of funeral. Arrived at their destination theTchuktchis cut the throat of the reindeer, take from the dead body its clothing, which they tear to pieces, and then plane the corpse on a funeral pile. During the progress of crema- tion, the assistants offer up prayers to the happy souls in the other world, asking them to watch over those who are still in the land of the living. These practices, horrible as they are, are followed in exactly the same manner to -day as in the ancient times. HE BOBS UP AGAIN. " As long se you are in eourse of training don't tom* the, hurtful thing. It will undermine all the qualities on which you depend for suco s, will in- jure your preoision, your presence of mind, and your endurance," The late noble Dean Stanley, of West- minster Abbey, was one of those men cf whom the Church in Bogle:id will long be proud. He had not • so =oh doubt about the temperance question as some of the lesserlights seem to have. Ha once said in Westminster Abbey, in regard to the prodigious evil of drunkenness, that for many there is only one remedy, namely, total abstinence. The one thing needful, in the present distress, is to remove the al- coholic temptations by all the meana which lie in our power." That is just what those favoring prohibition are trying to do. Sam Jones asks : " Do you know what temperance people are? They are those people who stand down there by the side of the stream and pull out the unfortunates who are in the current. Do you know who the prohibitioniete are? They are a party organized who go to the head of that stream and say to the saloon keeper: ' You shall not throw any more of our citizens into that (stream of misery, degradation and death.' Which do you like best now?" A PROMINENT LAWYER SAYS; "I have eight children, every one in good health, not one of whom but has taken Scott's Emulsion, in which my wife has boundless confidence." An American Congresman is being sued upon his promise that if Cleveland were elected wheat would be $1.15 a bushel. A farmer who heard him sowed great quanti- ties of wheat, and now he wants the dif- ference between $1.15 and about 60 cents a bushel on the whole crop. One trembles to think of the responsibility Sir Charles Tupper may have incurred by his cele- brated estimate of a crop of 640.000,000 bushels in the Northwest. Even at the price the Northwest farmer gets, this means a sum bigger than the national debt of Canada every year.
