NEWS NOTES
For the the last 40 years the Academy
of Philadelphia has been assiduously
making a collectionof human skulls,
which now number well up into the
thousands. It is the finest collection
of the kind in the world.
At the openitig of the century there
were only 47 translations of the whole
Bible in existence; to -day there are 90
entire translations and 2.30 partial ones
—820 in all. Five hundred millions of
the human race now have the oppor-
tunity of studying the Bible in regions
which knew almost nothing of it be-
fore the present century began.
A dose of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral taken
in time has prevented many a fit of sioknees
enc saved numerous lives. This proves the
necessity of keeping this incomparable
medicine where it can be readily reached
at all hours of the day and night.

witted and warm-hearted Irish woman.
While President Carnot's body was
lying in state, for blocks around her
house was a masslof suffocating humani-
ty. Lady Dufferin sent her servant
with glasses of water to as many of the
sufferers as were within reach.
. The torture of dyspepsia and eiok head-
ache, the agonizing itching and pain of salt
rheum, are removed by Hood's Sarsaparilla.
Mr Geo.' McTavish, Wingham, was
slightly injured on Tuesday by being
crashed between a machine and a door
pest .of the factory. It might have
been much worse than it was, had the
machine not' been "tip"ped 'torotre`side
4ust as it struck Mr McTavish.
'MrJTames Johnston, an old resident
arf Wingham and vicinity, died very
auddeniytwo weeks ago. Hehad been -
sick only a few days with a healing on
his side, similar to abscess, and he only
survived a short time after it broke.
The deceased was a bachelor, and was
in his 49th year.
Mr Wm. Rae has been engaged to
teach the school in S. S. No. 9, McKil-
lop, for the remainder of this year, in
the room and stead of Mr Wm. Doig.
We are credibly informed that Mr
Doig also expressed his intention of
coming back to the school in the capa-
city ilf,eacher.
Mr•*. Gutteridge, of Seaforth, has
sold the new brick double house, which
he erected this summer, to Mr J. P.
•McLareiif, of•Hullett. Mr McLaren,
having sold his farm, intends moving
to town to live, . and will occupy one
part of the house himself, and relit the
other part.
44 applications for the position of as-
•sistant to the principal in the Model
School, Goderich, were received. The
board accepted that of R. Sanderson,
late principal of Harriston public
school. J. E. Stewart, of Waterdown;
and Arch. McInnis, of Bagnor, county
of. Grey, were chosen as second and
third respectively, in case the others
declined to accept.
Mr J. Elliott, of Wingham, while
driving through a gateway onto his
prairie one day recently, had a narrow
escape from severe injuries or perhaps
worse. There is considerable of an in-
cline at the gate, and the buggy wheel
struck theost,throwing him forward,
one of his feet becoming fast in the rig
and the other in a front wheel.
On Saturday of last week Mr Wm.
Irwin, sr., died at the residence of his
son-in-law, Mr John Harding, Gorrie.
He had been in poor health for a long
time; but had recovered so as to be able
to be about a little, so that his death
was rather unexpected. He had reach-
ed the ripe age of 81 years, was widely
known and universally respected, and
for some years a consistent member of
the Presbyterian church. He leaves a
family of two sons and three daughters.
A peculiar occurrence happened at
`hich

McKa' and Archie McGregor were re-
moving the hind wheels from a heavy
waggon, when one of the wheels fell
with great force, apparently right on
top of the little fellow, but his head
went between two spokes, and the
wheel fell over him without hurting
him in the slightest, as neatly as if
some one had guided it.

THE EGG TRADE.
ilsrsGunn, Flavelle & Co,, provi
merchants, write the Empire:
The very unsatisfactory, condjtien
the egg trade in this city is appal
t to all engaged in it, both in the
ty and adjacent towns, but the cerise
s not so generally known. Why
should eggs go begging for buyers in
Tora.nto to -day at 7 cents to 8 cents
per dozen, when they are worth in
New York 17 cents? It will only take
about 5 cents to pay freight thence
and duty. Simply because the quality
is :poor. Why is this? Do not our
Canadian hens lay good eggs? There
are no better eggs than those produced
here. Then what is the trouble?
Simply this, they are not fresh. Many
farmers and country dealers do not
market their eggs when fresh, but
have got into the vicious habit of hold-
ing for it rise in price, and not-havilig
storage of suitable temperature, a tew
hot days catch them. They are then
hastened to market, arrive out of con-
dition, and are unsaleable. To -day
-then there are hundreds, yes, we be-
lieve, thousands of cases of eggs held
here for which the receiver would be
glad to get any price, but for which
there is no sale. Attempts to force
these into consumption have turned
consumers against eggs generally, and
other articles of food are now taking
their place.
The consumption of eggs in this city
at present is not half of what it should
be if stock were good. The loss the
country has sustained during past
months from deterioration in value of
eggs is very great. But there has al-
ways been a good demand for fresh
eggs, and there still is. If sent fresh
sellers can be assured a fair, if not very
large return."
The courts in Calcutta were recently
asked to permit a 15 -year-old widow to
select her father as her guardian. In
the affidavit accompanying her peti-
tion she states that she is residing with
her father, her mother, the step -daugh-
ter of her husband's daughter, and her
husband's son -in -lay. The only other
relatives, she says, are a son, her hus-
band's first cousin and her husband's
e
father's brother's widow—her aunt by
marriage, in short.
Gambling on the next rain and its
duration has become so great a vice in
Calcutta, that the. Government has
been called on to suppress it. Clerks
on their way to their offices otop at
commission houses to place bets, and
the women have been seized with the
mania, so that they not only pawn
their own and borrowed jewels, but go

The barns and outbuildings of Mr
Philip Cornell, Longwood's Road, Ek-
frid, were totally destroyed by fire the
other day, while threshing was in pro-
grees. The fire was started by a spark
being blown from the furnace into a
stack of grain, which stood near the
engine, while the engineer was replen-
ishing the fire. From the stack the
fire immediately spread to the barn,
and soon the whole of the buildings
were in flames, and in a short time
were destroyed, together with nearly
all the contents, including the whole of
this season's crop and some 15 pigs.
Seven horses, which were in the stable,
were rescued with some difficulty. The
loss on the building and contents will
be in the neighborhood of $2,000. In-
sured in the Ekfrid Mutual for $1,450.

TWENTY YEARS OF SUCCESS.
The Sentinel of Toronto has entered on
its twentieth year of publication, and is
the oldest and largest purely Protestant

past two years many important improve-

renders it invaluable to all who are inter-

The expression did not please the

I have yet to learn little master,"

"All right, old Man," was the pert

Mr Spencer did not pursue the con-

" CAPACITY OF HEAVEN.
A curious calculation of the capacity

"Thomas, will you please tell me

Thomas grew red in the face, and

Meanwhile, Thomas had pulled him-

KNOWLEDGE
Brings comfort and improvement and
tends to personal enjoyment when
rightly used. The many, who live bet-
ter than others and enjoy life more, with
lees expenditure, by more promptly
adapting the world's beet products to
the needs of physical being, will attest
the value to heal`h of the pure liquid
laxative prime' os embraced in the
remedy, Syrua of Figs.
Its excellence is due to its presenting
in the form most acceptable and pleas-
ant to the taste, the refreehing and truly
beneficial properties of a perfect lax-
ative ; effectually cleansing the system,
dispelling colds, headaches and fevers
and permanently During constipation.
It has given satisfaction to millions and
met with the approval of the medical
profession, because it cote on the Kid-
neys, Liver and Bowels without weak-
ening them and it is perfectly free from
every objectionable substance.
Syrup of Figs is for sale by all drug-

PEACH ICE CREAM.
One quart of cream, 1 pint strained ripe
peaches is cups of sugar, almond extract to
taste. Mix thoroughly, and freeze. Just
as peach ice cream meets the demand for a
truly refreahing delicacy on a hot day, so
does Ayer's Sarsaparilla meet the demand
for a thoroughly reliable blood -purifier,
when the system is wornout and debilitated
by reason of impure blood. It cures others,
and will cure yon.
