The London Advertiser hits a nail on
the head when it says "Sir John
Thompson is troubled with "Ossifica-
tion of the conscience," but a we`rse
feature of the matter is that a large
portion Of thepublic suffer from the
same malady.
The NEw ERA believes that Mr Bal-
four, M. P, P. for South Essex, will be
speaker for the Ontario House, all re-
ports to the contrary notwithstanding.
And he is a good man for the position.
The House seems to favor the "B's"
for Baxter and Ballaniyne have been
speakers, and the next will be B also.
On the nonsensical preferential -trade
idea, advanced at the Colonial Confer-
ence, the London Spectator has the
following, which will pretty fairly re-
present English opinion:-
"We
pinion:"We haven() objection to the colonies
giving specially favorable treatment
to our goods, though we should pre -
ter fnrt'heir own sakes that they should
aeon the true free trade principle, but
p can never return the favor in kind
and protect them in our markets
against foreign competition. Unless
we are prepared to bring ourselves to
the condition which America has
reached through McKinleyism, we
must stick to our principle that who-
ever hasoods to sell may come freely
and sell them here."
It is refreshing indeed to find that so
many Conservative papers have con-
demned the Curran bridge scandal,
especially when others of similar nature
have been condoned; butot should: be
remembered that it was primarily due
to the efforts of the Liberals that the
matter was investigated at all. Speak-
ing of it the Goderich Star says:-
"One of the worst cases of public rob-
bery in the history of Canada has been
shown up in connection with the build-
ing of the Curran bridge. The fact
that over $150,000 was stolen by the
pirates who had charge of the work
means a looseness in method which is
unpardonable."
As the work was done under super-
vision of the Public Works department,
how can the Minister escape his re-
sponsibility in the matter.

The opponents of Sir Oliver Mowat, who,
during the campaign so zealously argued
for the holding of sessions of the Legisla-
ture once every twa..years,. now demand a
session within six moths of the last one
held. But the Legislature will hot meet

A new ballot, invented by ex -Mayor Du-
mber, of Ottawa, is to be employed in the
next Dominioh elections. It has been need
in municipal elections in Ottawa, with sat-
isfactory results, spoiled ballots being un-
known. The plan of the ballots is circular
discs opposite each name, in the centre of
which the voter places hie mark.
A onriona case of somnambulism occur-
red Saturday night at Quebec. A servant
girl ascended to the roof of a house, which
is a steep one, and wa ed most easily on
the gable. People aesOmbled below, and a
Oliceman went u on t'he neighboring
pp house
to catch her. She leaped on the same house
as the policeman was on, and he cangbt
her. The nervous shock she received on
waking is reported to have made the girl

About 1L80 Thursday night a very pre.
oeptible shook of earth quake was felt in
Lindsay. There was a tremor in the earth
which lasted for two three seconds, and
was followed by 'a report or explosion
wbioh seemealike a Gannon which had been
fired .at Es long distance off. Houses were
shaken and windows rattled. Quite a
number of citizens of the South Ward
rushed out of their houses, thinking a mill
boiler had exploded. No damage appears
to have been done. This affair recalled
the explosion of a boiler in Dovey's mill
here some years ago, by which Robert
Powles met his death. There is no doubt
