THE CLINTON NEW ERA
A. Newspaper Report,
It was head by an Ottawa
Government Official.
He Strongly Endorses every
• Statement.
The -Report was Published in the
Ottawa "Citizen."
IT REFERRED TO A WONDERFUL
CURE BY PAINH'S CELERY
COMPOUND.
Some ,veeke ago the Ottawa Citizen pub-
lished the particulars of a moat wonderful
cure effected by Paine's Celery Compound.
The fortunate lady who was enabled to
throw off the deadly grasp of disease and
suffering is well know to many outsiders
of her own immediate district.
Scores of men and women were aware of
the fact that Mrs Neil McKay, of North
Hill, Lingwiek, P. Q.,had been doctoring
for a long time, but al the best efforts of
her physicians were of no avail. Her
strength was all gone; she was extremely
weak, and had great difficulty in moving
about. A few years ago she was a woman
who weighed 185 pounds; sickness and dis-
ease reduced her to a mere shadow.
Mrs McKay, at a critical period, deter-
mined to test the curing virtues of Paine's
Celery Compound. The first bottle proved
that it contained the elements that could
banish trouble and sickness. The medi-
cine was continued with the result that
seven bottles made her a new woman.
Theee facts appearing in the Citizen,
rantfe;'iead by Mr Chas. W. Ross, of the De-
partnl nt of Railways and Canals, Ottawa,
cause ',him to write the following letter:
"I have just seen in the Citizen another
proof of hsse by the use of Paine's Celery
Compound, aria 1 n_'' write to corroborate
the statements of Mrs Neil McKay and
Mr Pennoyer, postmaster, of Gould, Ling-
wick, Que. I have personally known Mrs
McKay for a number of years, having been
a resident of Lingwick for thirty years,
she was cne of my customers for ten years;
and I have seen her at times net able to
walk. She has been treated by seyeral
doctors without any apparent relief until
she began to use Paine's Celery Compound;
and though I am now a resident of Ottawa,
I have had occasion to see Mrs McKay two
or three times a year, and know the state-
ments in her case to be wholly correct."
Every care made by Paine's Celery Com-
pound in Canada can be endorsed and
vouched for as strcngly as Mrs McKay's
wonderful case. No false statements are
ever allowed to be made regarding the
great cures reported from week to week by
the Canadian press. The cures made by
Paine's Celery Compound are the only
cures that stand thorough investigation,
Some Historical Lies,
There was probably no such man as
Romulus. The first historian who men-
tions him lived at a distance of time so
great as to throw extreme discredit on the
story ae told by him.
---Alexander-the--Great , did., not weep: for
other worlds to conquer. There is reason
to suspect that his army met with a serious
reverse in India, a fact that induced him
to retrace his steps.
The crew of Le Vengeur, the famous
French ship sank by an English man-of-
war, did not cry, "Viva la Republique?"
They bawled for help, and the English
boats were sent to their assistance.
The immense burning glasses with which
Archimedes burned the ships of the be-
siegers of Syracuse at ten miles distance
were never manufactured, and it is now
known that they could not have existed
Pitt did not nue the expression: "Thy
atrocious crime of being a young man. '
The words were used by Dr. Johnson,Iwho
was not present, but wrote a report of the
speech from an abstract given him by a
hearer.
It Looks Sihsplcions.
Mrs. Mildway—Bnt what makes you
think Mrs. De Seever is a bad man?
Mrs. Sharpe—My dear women, when a
man never forgets to mail the letters his:
wife intrusts him with, yon may be sure
he has clandestine oorresponllenoe with
some other woman, or he wouldn't be so
careful to clean out his pockets before go-
ing home.—Boston Transcript

Splendid Displays of Kreseats Among the
Wealthy Chace. --Europeans Welcomed.
.Asn invitation to an Egyptian wedding
should Dever be declined if one wiehes to
see something novel and intereeting, and
the high-class Egyptians are much flat-
tered and honored if Europeans attend
these entertainments, • One of their reasons
for welcoming European women is that
t5ie ie one of the few opportunities which
*hq male Egyptians have to dance and talk
with ladies --a rare treat for them, The
men are well educated and intelligent.
Theyusually speak English, and they all
speaFrench.. Then, too, the European
woman has an opportunity to visit the
harem and penetrate the iuterior of that
mysterious spot. Here one sees the native
women without their veils, and in all the
spleudor of their jewels, of which they are
exceedingly fond ; and this is one of the very
few chances which they have of displaying
their possessions to each other. The little
bride of 15, at whose wedding a corre-
spondent of Harper's Bazar was present,
had among her wedding gifts, three
diamond tiaras and fifty-six shawls!
Her bedroom, which she furnished herself,
was very beautiful, and among other lux-
urious appointments were cut glee's bowls
and pitchers on the washstand, fine linen
towels heavily "embroidered with gold, a
silver toilet set on the dressing -table and,
on the little table by the bed, a gold tray
with gold pitoher and cups to matoh, and
many other modern European articles
about the room showing that the Egyptian
woman is progressing in some directions at
least, notwithstanding her limited environ-
ment.
There is no church ceremony for the
bride; the groom goes to the mosque and
prays, she meanwhile waiting for his re-
turn, seated ou a throne in her apartment,
and gazed at by many women. When the
bridegroom Dame, at a wedding witnessed
by the correspondent, the little trembling
bride arose, her veil was put over her fade,
and from an opposite door the procession
entered—eunuchs carrying torches, sing-
ing women. and then the groom, dressed
in a conventional modern European dress
suit. He was a good-looking fellow of 22
years. He had been educated in France,
and bad imbibed many progressive ideas.
He advanced to the bride and raised her
veil, seeing thus her face for the first time
(what an anxious moment!) looked at her
intently for a moment. and bent over and
kiest K r. The friends then stepped for-
ward andon;.yed their congratulations,
much as wedo at Lteee Those who were
free to do so went downeeeirs, guided by
the eunuchs through many intricate pass-
ages, and opening a number of heavily
bolted gates, until we reached the main
part of the palace, where the military
band was playing, and supper was served
for 1,000 persona.

A Spot in Persia 130 in the Shade.
The hottest region on the earth's surface
Is on the southwestern coast of Persia, on
the borders of the Pereiun gulf, says an
exchange. For forty coneeoutive days in •
the months of July and Angnst the mer-
cury has been known to stand above 100
degrees in the shade night and day, and to
run hp as high as 130 degrees in the mid-
dle of the afternoon. At Bahrin, in the
centre of the moat torrid part of thio most
torrid belt, as though it were nature's in-
tention to make the place ae unbearable as
possible, water from wells is something
unknown. Great shafts have been ennk
to a depth of 500 feet, but always with the
same result—no water. Notwithstanding
this serious drawback, a numerous pupu-
lation contrives to live there, thanks to co-
pious springs which-.buret_Lorth.from__the_.
bottom of the golf more than a mile
from shore. The water from these
springs is obtained in a most curious and
novel manner. ' Machadores, whose sole
occupation is that of furnishing the people
of Bahrin with the life-giving fluid, repair
to that portion of the gulf where the
springs are situated, and bring away with
them hundreds of skin bags full of the
water each day. The water of the gulf
where the springs- burst forth is nearly
two hundred feet deep, but the macho-
doree—divers=manage to fill their goat-
skin sacks by diving to the bottom and
holding the mouths of the bags over the
fountain jets; this, too, without allowing
the salt water of the gulf to mix with it.
The source of these submarine fountains
is thought to be in the hills of Osmond,
500 miles away. Being situated at the
bottom of the gulf, it is a mystery how
they were ever discovered, but the feat,
remains they have been known eince the
dawn of history,
Tried to Carry Of a Baby.
A big eagle, which has been seen several
times recently among the rocky crags of
Broken Buck Mountain, about twenty
miles west of Johnson City, Tenn., made
its appearance a day or two ago in the
valley below in a very startling manner,
says a correspondent of the Cincinnati En-
quirer. While some colored women were
washing clothes on the brink of a small
stream it swooped down upon them, and,
seizing a little piokaninny, which was
bound fast in a heavy chair, started to -
carry it away, chair and all, in its great
talons. The prey was so heavy, however,
that the bird's flight was slow and uncer-
tain, and while trying to pick its way
through fhe top of a tree, a rung of the
chair caught on a broken limb, thne break-
ing the eagle's hold and miraculously saved
the life of the child, which was almost
stripped of its clothing, but left seated in
an upright position on an adjoining branch,
which prevented the chair from turning
peer. The terrified screams of the woman
frightened the bird away and brought some
men to the scene, who, after some delay,
succeeded in lowering the baby with ropes.
It was not seriously hurt. One claw of
the bird left a deep incision on its shoulder.
About five miles further on a mountain-
eer, who was returning home from a hunt
with hie gun, fired a heavy charge of
turkey shot at what he supposed to be the
same eagle as it descended into his barn-
yard after some chiohens. One wing was
broken by the shot, and the bird, thus
unable to fly, was dispatched by the hunter
with a tail from the fence after a hard
fight, in which the man received several
painful wounds from beak and talons. It
measured eight feet from tip to tip.
