Oooestsui let Lacking in Acute reeling— Thu Death. is Considered a Pleasant Otte al0,ith8 Yletlut Suffers No k'ear while In uspense, Most people regard death by a fallas one of the most agonizing forms of dying: In a lecture at Zurich, Professor Heim has declared ea , ya a Berlin correspondent, that thikelainien is. erroneous. The first fact to be considered, eidered, aopording to the profee• frog, is that the subjective feelings in the various kinds of fall are the same. There' " are people who have escaped death by a hairs breadth, who reached the, stage of Unconecionslless, and who are able to re• port what they felt. Professor Heim, who has`oecupied himself with this interesting question for many years, bases his obeservations on personal experi- ences, . and on a large number of eases which have oaourred, not only in the monntadns, bat also in war, in indus- trial establishmenta and in railway Root - dents.' "The victim suffers no pain, no aware of whatyis r goingr. on.He is The time perfectly eseems long to• him. In a few seconds his able to think so l6uolt that he oaa report an entire hoar on it. His thinking power is im- 'gensely increased. In almost all oases the ist seems suddenly lighted up as if by a flash of lightning. All phases of life pass before the.mind's eye, nothing petty or nn - important disturbing the retrospect. Then 'gentle, soft tones sound in one's ears and die away at last When unconsciousness sets in. One heard' the fall of the body, but 'cue'does }trot•feel it. It will be remembered "tlliit`Mr.1Wh tm r1er,'Who had a severe sno ;see len of falls once in 'the Alps without lofiing life consciousness, declares em- phatioally that as he, hounded from one rook to anetlier he ,felt absolutely ,,page.• The, same thing hap - peps on the battle field; the en- ' 'tranee of 'th'e bullet into the body is not ' felt and it isnot till he feels the blood flowing or a limb paralyzed that the soldier knows' he' is wounded. Persons who have bad limbs broken by' a fall do not know which limbs are 'affected till' they try to rise, A't' the' moment of' a fall the whole intellectual activity is lnereaeed to an ex- traordinary degree. There is not a trace .4 anxiety. One conaid•rs quickly what will happen or may happen. This is by no means the consequence of presence of anind, it is rather the product of absolute fasoessity. A solemn composure takes possession of the victim. Death by fall is s beautiful one. Great thoughts fill the. vietim's soul; they fall painlessly into a great blue sky. • ,-' Electric Light as a Disinfectant. Prof. H. M. Ward's researches on the in- fluence of light on bacteria have brought oat some remarkable facts. Prof. Ward asleem. conclusively that . the naked are light may` be used in hospitals or rail- way ears most off, ectively as a disinfectant, by reason of the ei opt of its raya upon bacteria He has allowed the various rays of the spectrum to fall on films of gelatine or sugar containing spores of beateria, and Inds that whether the spectrum is got from Imnlight or electric light, there is no'per-.- oeptible action on the spores of bacteria by the infra -red, red, orange or yellow rays, whilst all the spores are injured by the rayl of the bine and violet region. Broad- ly ■eking, the injurious action begins at the e, and diminishes towards the ultra viola, - With the electric light, quartz Manse's and prisms had to be used in form- ing the spectrum, as the results with pails _w :.fee. ,,This ..il;Ijtifri'oui' inflaenoe-af" the binrays extended far into the ultra violet. The intervention of a thin piece of glass reaulted in cutting off a large proportion of effeotive rays. The Fascinating Slot Machine. "There goes my last nickel," remarked a young man yeaterday, as he shoved five cents into the maw of a slot machine. 'Tve lost more money on these machines than I ever threw away on the wheel at the races. They're more fascinating to me than a Louisiana lottery ticket, and as I ran across them everywhere they have jnat about broken me np. There's some satisfaction in sitting down to a straight game and feeling that you're not a fool and stand some show of winning a pot. But these inanimate, inhuman things break me up. I see that the officials in' Syracuse and other places have cleared them out, and 'twonld be a good thing for ns boys if the world was rid of them. Why. they're more demoralizing than any form of gamb- ling I'm acquainted with, and the worst thing about them is that you can't bet on the winner. "—Buffalo Express. When you take pills it's • an important point to have them small—provided they have equal strength and efficacy. You'll find what you want in these little liver pills of Dr. Pierce. They're put up in a better way, and they act in a better way, than the huge Oki -fashioned pills. What you want when you're "all out of sorts "—grumpy, thick-headed and take a gloomy view of life, is these Pellets to clear up your system and start your liver into healthful action. Sick Headache, Bilious Headache, Constipation, Indigestion, Bil- ious Attacks, and all derange- ments of the liver, stomach and bowels, are prevented, re- lieved, 'and cured. Nasal Constructor J. J. Woodward and J, C. McGuire of the navy department re- turned from Baltimore after haying tested the aluminium boats which have just been made by a 8rm in that city for the Well- man arctic expedition, The that boat com- pleted, which is 18 feet long, 4 feet beam and 2 feet deep amidships, weighing 860 pounds, was thoroughly tested and was found to be even more stable than was ex- pected. The boat was put in the water empty, and a man tried to capsize it by sittingon the gunwale and d an in t- 1i h out- side, but it was impossible to overturn it. It was then loaded with sandbags weigh- ing 8,853 pounds, and seven men, weigh- ing 1,128 pounds, 'also got on board, mak- ing 4,401 pounds in all. Even with this great load the boat remained 534 inches out of the water amidships. The boat was then unloaded, and the airtight compart- ments were tested by capsizing the boat. But it was found impossible to get it more than half full of water, since the compart- ments held it so high out of the water as to act on the principle of a self bailer. The boat was then taken alongside the wharf and filled with water until the gunwale was flush with the surface, and then a man got on either end over the airtight compartments. Still the boat did not sink, and as soon se it was cast loose it heeled over and emptied out one-half the water and then righted itself again. The air- tight compartments were subsequently tested by being filled with water, and when the doors were screwed down the boat was rolled over and the compartments were found to be perfectly tight. The two naval experts who made the test have been requested by Secretary Her- bert erbert to make a full report in writing to the department. All the boats have been tested and an official report made upon them to the navy departnient. The secre- tary of the navy Is very much interested in the matter; and some of the other de- pslrtment atithorities believe that there are great" possibilities Ahead for aluminium boats for the navy. ---Washington Letter. • txk„ in T o • 4 R,GEO.MERRETT Toronto, Ontario. As Well as Ever After Taking Hood's Sarsaparilla Cured of a Serious Disease. "I' was suffering from what 1s known as Bright's disease for five years, and for days at a time I have been unable, Io straighten myself up. I was in bed for three weeks; during that time I had leeches applied and derived no bene. fit. Seeing Hood's Sarsaparilla advertised in the papers I decided to try a bottle. The process of Lippmann, or Raleigh, is pronounced by a Writer in The Optician as being in principle the most wonderful innovation in photography which has been made since the first invention of that art —the strata of violet iridescence lying at the limit and those due to the more lengthy stationary waves near to the limit of pos- sible microscopic separation—the realiza- tion of this process thus intimating, among other things, how perfect is the control which is possible to be afforded by optical methods .over the dispositions of what might be termed molecular mechanism. It is possible, this writer remarks, to pro- duw Lippmann's or Raleigh's images in such a manner that the r2rtodin structure may be correlated, not with the almost in- finite range of tints of nature, but with a Limited number—say three, which may be described as the equivalent tints of visual color sensation, and in which way it would be easy to make a great improvement on the original form of the Lippmann proo- , THE LADIES. The wife of a prominent business man met with a peculiar accident theother aft- ernoon. She was standing at the corner of Chapel and State streets, in front of Erastus Corning's residence, waiting for a sleigh loaded with brick to pass, when the sleigh swerved and tipped over, throwing the bricks on the sidewalk and piling them up around the woman up to her knees. She was in a predicament, as it was im- possible for her to move, her legs being as in a vise. However, she was not hurt and not one bit seared. So she calmly waited until two or three men tool the bricks away and liberated her from her unenvia- ble position.—Albany Express. WITH INVALIDS. Yes! with invalids the appetite is capric- ions and needs coaxing, that is just the reason they improve so rapidly under Scott's Emulsion, which is as palatable as cream. Spying a Nun to Good Purpose. We find the following story from Vog- lar Peat county, Austria-Hungary, in the Buda -Perth Hirlap: "On Friday a person dressed like a nun willed late at the house of a country judge and asked shelter for the night. The legal functionary acqui- esced, ordered supper and also desired that a sleeping apartment might be got ready: A young manservant of the judge, not al- together liking her mien, took it into his head to secrete himself in the bedchamber. "When the nun had divested herself of her outer garments, his suspicions were found to be correct, for there stood a man, who furtively looked about the room as he ]aid two revolvers and a large knife upon the table. Creeping from his hiding place, the servant gripped one of the re- volvers and fired at the fellow, who fell, mortally wounded. Observing from the window two or three men making off, the servant fired several shots at their retreat- ing forms. Jumping over the fence which su,rronnded the house, however, they ef- fected their escape. The nun turned out to be a man the police had been looking for for some time past." A BOON To HonsEMEN.—One bottle of Eng- lish Spavin Liniment completely removed a curb from my horse. I take pleasure in recommending the remedy, aa it acts with mysterious promptness in the removal from horses of hard, soft or calloused lumps, blood spavin, splints, curbs, Sweeny, stifles and s rains. Surgical Peat, The advance of surgery Can furnish fevr more singular illustrations than is sup -- plied by, an operation in one of the Lon- don hosptale, whereby the breast of a blackbird was fastened to a woman's face as a substitute for her nose, which had been so damaged that it had to be remov- ed. The woman, who had been a house- maid in a hotel, had been struck in the face by a descending lift, which caused the injury that led to the operation. First of all, the doctors endeavored to patch up the damaged organ, and she was attended to in this way as anout patient, but a cure was not being effected, and the nose in its patched condition was of no use. The dootors resolved to try the experiment of giving her a new one, and accordingly a blackbird was killed, and before its body was cold its breastbone was applied to the woman's face, and what remained of the skin of the old organ was drawn over It. The operation proved perfectly sue- oeesful.--London Tit -Bits, He Took Them For Churches. He was a Turk, and it was his first day in America. His strange dress held at- tracted a crowd of gamins, who followed him at a little distance. Ile walked along lower Broadway, looking wonderingly and reverently at the akyscraping structures. The peripatetic philosopher accosted him and asked him. fn his own language how he liked things. Delighted at finding a stranger who could understand him, the foreigner became quite voluble. "What pious people you are 1" he ex claimed. "Why?" "You have so many hooses of worship," was the reverential answer as he pointed ;o the large office buildings. To him an immense building could only represent a church.—New York Recorder. Hood's Pills are prompt and efficient, yet easy of action. Sold by all druggists. 25c. What might have resulted fatally, happened to Mrs W. G. Taylor, Hen- fryn, on Thursday of last week. After having eaten some canned tomatoes, she was taken suddenly ill. A doctor. was called in and he pronounced aseri- ous case of poisoning. Luckily she is recovering. Pimples, boils and other humors of the blood are liable to break out in the warm weather. Prevent it by taking Hood's Sareaparilla. Mr David Agnew, of Ashfield, took to the Lucknow Sentinel office, on Wednesday, a couple of ripe tomatoes. This is certainly the earliest we have ever seen ripe tomatoes grown in this section, and we doubt if it can be edualled in another county in the Pro- vince. Weary wives, mothers, and daughters— tired nurses, watchers, and help—tired wo- men of all classes should take Ayer'e Ser- eaperilla. It is the kind they need to give pure blood, firm nerves, buoyant spirits, and refreshing sleep. There is no tonic equal to Ayer's Sarsaparilla. We regret to have to state that on Thursday afternoon, the beautiful resi- dence of John Bailie, 2nd con. of West Wawanosh, was, along with a quantity of .household.£ueniture, .clothing, etc., destroyed by fire, caused through a defect in a flue or stoyepipe. But to all appearance it ori inated, a$.,,far as learned, in the kiln at .tdie time about which the fire eta red. Mr Bailie was in Dungannon, when he was speedily sent for, and told the sad news that his house was on fire. Although he was secured by insurance in the London Mutual to some extent, his loss will be heavy, as the dwelling and con- tents were valuable, it being built of brick, and a good commodious farm house. Mr Geo. T. Fulford, of "Pink Pills" fame, arrived at his home in Brockville a few days ago. He and his family have been spending the past few months in Lon- don, Eng., where he has been looking after the interests of his extensive business. "Pink Pills" is having a Large Bale in Eng- land and is proving as popular there as it is in Ameriaa, Mr Fulford is one of the most progressive men . in the Dominion, fall of vim and energy, and the extensive business built up by him is a monument to his ability. His name has become a household word in Canada, and he has through his remedies done much to alle- viate human suffering. A very sad accident occurred at Pene- tanguishino Thursday evening. Frank Maines, aged 7 years, climbed a tree and is supposed to have Blipped and fallen to the ground, when a stick ran into his breast and broke his ribs. He was heard to scream, and his father picked him up. They called in two doctors who pronounced him dying. He lived only a few minutes, without becoming conscious. DEATH RATE REDUCED. GRATIFYING REPORT OF THE Donner ON HEALTH BUREAU—FORTY PER CENT. FEW- ER DEATHS IN CANADA LAST YEAR THAN EVER BEFORE. OWATTA, June 25.—The last report of the Health Bureau here contains the highly gratifying intelligence that the death rate in Canada during the last year was lower than in any previous year Binoe the Con- federation, being within a fraction of forty per cent. lower than the beet year over be- fore reported. Closer examination re• veale that the greatest decrease was in deaths from Bright's disease, Diabetes, Dropsy, Heart disease, Rheumatism and other diseases paused by disordered or dis- eased kidneys. Further investigation shows that where the oases of such diseases have decreased, the people have within the year made free use of Dodd's Kidney Pills. Consequently it is sale to say that the fall- ing off in Canada's death rate is due to no- thing but Dodd's Kidney Pills. On Tuesday Mrs Wm. Langheed, of West Wawanosh, aged 60 years, de- parted this life. Her death was caused froin heart disease, being brought on by over exertion and excitement whilst in attendance on her daughter, late Mrs Baker, of Hollywood.
