Rev. Dr. Talmage's new tabernacle, at
the corner of Clinton and Greene avenues,
Brooklyn, was burned at noon on Sunday.
The Hotel Regent, adjoining and several
dwelling houses in the vicinity were also
destroyed. The lose ie estimated at a mil-
lion dollars. This is the fourth time Dr
Talmage has lest his chnroh by fire. He
was in the chnroh when the fire started,
surrounded by a number of his congrega-
tion, but all escaped. He was moved to
tears as he witnessed the destruction of the
beautiful edifice. An effort will be mad t
to rebuild.
In the public accounts committee Tnee.
day Mr Lister continued his examination
ofiMr O'Connor, Q. C., legal agent for the
Department of Justice, bringing out the
fact that Mr O'Connor drew fees at the
rate of $100 a day as counsel in oases where
be did not act as counsel at all. His
partner, Mr Hogg, Q. C., does all the work
and it turns out that in some cases for
every$100 earned by Mr Hogg,Mr O'Connor
also drew $100. Mr Hogg charged 9100
for arguing a demnrrer; for which Mr Lis-
ter said the tariff was $95 in the Court of
Appeal None of these bills were taxed by
a legal officer, but all palmed by the De•
partment of Justice.
Mr Van Horne's estimate of the future
of Fort William, whioh be asserts will
soon be a city of 40,000 to 50,000 inhabi-
tants, is a tribute ottheforesight and good
judgment of 'Hon. Alex. Mackenzie, Mr
Mackenzie's opponents, while he was
Premier, never ceased to revile and abuse
25c per box or five boxes for 91, him for his work on the Kaministiquia,
and ridionle and denunciation of the de-
velopment of that region was on every
Conservative tongue in those days. Now
time brings its justification, and Mr Van
Horne, by investment and personal spin.
