VIGOROUS- POLI I
One True Source of Personal Force
and Courage.
Tremendous Capacity for Accomplishing Work—Vigorous
Digestion and Calm Nerves Accomplish all—Paine's
Celery Compound a Remedy that Does the World Good,
COUNCILLOR GEORGE F. MORSE.
The admiration accorded certain public
men is due to their splendid moral courage.
Great moral courage and determination
are impossible without a sturdy digestion,
a healthy liver, and a vigorously nourished
nervous system. No one can imagine a
Gladstone, Salisbury, Laurier, Thompson,
or any great champion of his party in par-
liamentary debate, with a badly nourished
brain, a weak digestion, and shaky nerves.
Only the healthy man, whose organs are
doing their duty, is firm, convincing, mag-
netic, courageous.
i A man of ideas needs sound health to
carry them out, and a clear, cool brain is
better than a shaky one, however brilliant.
The men who can work long hours ander
pressure win success, and fame depends
oftener on a strong stomach, healthy nerv-

NOVJL ACT Or OIHARE1 ,
One of the most novel acts of charity,
and one wiiioh may well serve as an ex-
ample for more prosperous and rnore
fortunate p irons, was that which re -
stilted in the contribution of $435 for
the poor of the this city, which was
handed over to Marshal Frey last night
b Warden John F. Weyler, of the
Maryland Penitentiary. The Money
was donated by the inmates of the in-
stitution.
In explanation of the act, Mr Wey-
ler said that one day this week two or
three of the prisoners approached him
and stated that they noticed through
the.papers that much distress prevail-
ed amnong the poor , of Baltimore, and
they asked his permission and assist-
ance for the purpose of raising a fund
among the prisoners for the needy out-
side. The warden said that lie com-
mended the spirit and the interest the
men took in the matter, and readily
gave his cosset. The result was the
collection of $435.
The sums contributed ranged from
25 cents to O. There was one donation
of $10 and a few 10 cents each. One of
the men gave $25, but the warden did
not think it proper that he should con-
tribute so large an amount, and re-
duced it to $5. The donations of some
others, which were larger than the
warden thought the men should give
in proportion to the sums to their cre-
dit, were also reduced.
The act appears the more commen-
dable in that the money of the men is
earned by overwork, after they have
completed their allotted tasks. Some
earn in this way from $3 to $5
and $10 a month, while a small per-
centage of skilled workers earn by
overtime as much as $25 or $30 a month.
The money is not given to the prison-
ers, but is held by the warden to their
credit. There are 601 convicts in die'
penitentiary, exclusive of 44 women
who did not contribute.—Baltimore

ery Compound is the immediate improve-
ment of appetite and gradual gain in weight.
This remarkable remedy gets to work at
once to nourish nerve centres and purify
the blood of harmful humors. It was the
belief of Prof. Phelps, of Dartmouth col-
lege, the discoverer of Celery Compound,
and he so stated to his olessee at Dartmouth
college, that only when the system is per-
fectly nourished in tissue, blood and nerve
centres, is it possible to drive out the spe-
cial disorders from important organs like
the liver, kidneys, heart and stomach.
Paine's Celery Compound to -day sus-
tains the strength of thousands of hard
worked men and women who cannot take
vacations, and feels the effects of the an•.
nater, l demands made upon their strength
and nervous energy.

Mrs H. Binge n, -of East Main St.,
Galt, gives some very interesting and really
most wonderful results from the use of
Williams' Royal Crown Remedy. We have
never heard of the like performed before
by any medicine, and were it not that the
facie have come ander our personal knowl-
edge we would be inclined to be sceptical.
These facts are verified by other well
known citizens. She writes:—"I had a
little boy very bad with croup, so bad, in-
deed, that we had to have a silver tube put
in his throat, and it was there for three
months and doctors gave me no hope but
that he might have to have it. there all his
time. A friend dropped in and saw the
child and recommended me totry Williams'
Royal Crown Remedy, and at his request
I did so, and I am happy to say, that in a
few days, the dootore were able to take the
tube out, and.I fully believe it was the use
of Williams' Royal Crown Remedy that did
it. Is it any wonder I should write to say
it is a pleasure for me to recommend this
remedy to anybody. It is a great blood
builder and a specific for after effeots of
grippe, now so dangerous and deadly. No
house should be without it—it will save
them many a doctor's bill.

These popular estaolishmenta are de-
scribed by George S. Layard in the Nine-
t_eeuth.Century. A public kitchen for the
working elapses was inaugurated in 1866
by a German woman, Han 3lorgenstein.
She has established many of these kitchens,
each one having a public dining room,
comfortably, warmed and furnished, and
supplied with the daily papers. laaoh
kitchen, supplying perhaps from 300 to
400 people with daily meals, is managed
by a local committee, the whole scheme
being under the control of a central ooun-
oil. All the paid cooks are on the pre.
miser by 6 in the morning, and the vege-
tables and meat have been brought in be-
fore them. Waste of any kind is striotly
forbidden. A subscription of $3,2650 was
sufficient to start this scheme; the reserve
fund set aside for providing new kitchens
inoreases every year, while the council pays
fair wages and is able to pension off its old
servants, For a sum varying from three
to six oents the Berlin workman can obtain
a satisfactory meal at any of these restaur-
ants. A. dinner for four cents allows a
basin of thick, substantial German soup,
a plate of vegetables, and a plate of pndd •
ing, and a roll of bread in addition costs,a
little over one-fourth of a cent.
BRIGHT SPRING DAYS.
The spring should be pre-eminently a
season of contentment, happiness and hope.
In these bright and pleasant months the
country should enjoy its highest degree of
tranquility. But spring, it is well known,
is otters, a period of discomfort and die•
turbance in the physical system. Im-
portant organs of the body become torpid
or irregular in their action, and the fact is
instantly reflected in the mental condition
of the individual. A disordered liver means
disordered nerves and a dull and unsteady
brain. Anything which' will bring the
physical system into harmony with budding
Nature confers an enormous benefit upon
the nation, besides the mere allaying of
physical discomfort. Hood's Sarsaparilla
does this, as thousands of grateful and hap-
py men and women can testify, and increas-
ed use of this standard spring medicine is
of more real practical importance in pro-
moting health and quiet in the business
world than reams of abstract theorizing.
